Bought this book as I had heard our station here (WU.CC, 99.9) do a book review on their program called, "Between the pages." I thought this would be an easy read as I love my pastors but I found there was a lot to learn about being God's Armor Bearer. It convicted me and I had to repent for some of the things I had been doing wrong and had a bad heart attitude toward my pastor I didn't see until I read this book. Thankful for men who are not afraid to tell us what we can do and should do as men and women who are under our pastors care, prayers, souls being watched over and being on board with their vision, especially when you don't get it, see it, feel it should be done a different way. Mr. Nance has written a great book and I would recommend this for each believer who has a pastor. Yes, that is you reading this. We need our pastors and God loves unity and works through it. He can't move when we are divided. That is the enemy who wants that. Our pastors need our help, prayers, support and love. Buy this book! You will love it.

I give all the Armor Bearer books a 5 star rating except this one for a reason. It is to catch the attention of you- another possible purchaser. I purchased volume 1. I then purchased this since vol 2 is no longer easy to find. When I set the vol1 and 2 book next to my vol 1 book I noticed it to be obviously thinner. Why is volume 1 and 2 combined smaller than volume 1 by itself??? Answer: In short they reorganized volume 1 and deleted several sections in the process. There is little or no new material in the combined book. This should have been made known in the synopsis of the book but is not. In short: Buy volume 1 and get a great book which I have read and enjoy! Skip volume 2 and I am just now purchasing volume 3. Hope its not a reorganization of the sections they deleted in this book LOL.

My new Pastor recommended this book to me. As an Associate Minister from another church I recently moved from; this book showed me things that I had already experienced but more importantly this book gave me the explanation of what I had experienced! Now I have an enlightened vision for my calling in the ministry as an Amor Bearer! Anyone interested in coming into the ministry ought to be required to read this book first! I read this book as a requirement for a job application for a Christian ministry and was not really sure what to expect.I was pleasantly surprised by the book and really appreciated the insights given by the associate pastor who authored the book. I have grown up as "PK" or pastor's kid and have seen many rebellious and independent minded parishoners over the years wreak havoc in the church. They had an agenda and were going to pursue it no matter what leadership thought about it or what the church staff may have felt the leading of the Lord was for the congregation.If you are not an associate pastor or other lay person on staff at a church you may have to think a little harder how this book applies to you as you read it but it is worth the extra effort. The idea of honoring the very responsibility laden position pastors have with support, prayer and loyalty is a lesson for all of us. If we laid our personal agendas down and instead offered loyal service to our pastors we can fully expect God to honor us and fulfill our purpose here on the earth.I feel that many people out of fear believe that if they do not MAKE their ministry happen it will be lost but Jesus said we must lose our lives to find them. I think this is the essence of what Mr. Nance is saying an armorbearer must do.I know there are some negative reactions against this book but I caution that the author clearly states that this book is written for church members working with Godly pastors who are in obedience to the Word and not people operating completely outside of the Word of God and truth. Matthew 18 clearly lays out a pattern for church discipline and I do not believe that Mr. Nance is preaching the idea of condoning sin.The idea is to be loyal, supportive and willing to do spiritual battle for our leaders. Praying for them when they stumble and doing everything to restore them instead of tearing them down. Because after all, isn't this what we would wish for ourselves when we go through a tough time? How much more do our church leaders need this support!It is a very short book and easy to read but really full of wisdom and encouragement. I definitely recommend it!

I already knew all of this, so it just seemed to repeat the same message over and over. Maybe some people need to told this way-just wasn't for me.There was one sentece toward the end of the book that I really liked: When you are an Armor bearer, you are that persons Armor bearer for life.

This is a great series! My son is really into sports and learning about the game. Since he is so young these books are a perfect introduction to the rules of the game. Sports plus dinosaurs, what more could a young boy want.

I stumbled upon Lisa Wheeler's Dino-sports books at our local library. My five year old's interest are pretty specific, he likes dinosaurs and dangerous creatures. So, I have to scour the library to find anything that fits the bill. We first read Dino-Baseball and Dino-Soccer. He loved them so much I bought Dino-Hockey on Amazon as a surprise. I got Dino-Soccer too. Dino-Football was released in August this year and I did a pre-order for it. Jack has made me read these for OVER a week now exclusively at bedtime. I beg and plead for him to pick something else out..anything. He just laughs! On top of the awesome writing the illustrations are hilarious. Wheeler and Gott are a DYNAMITE team. Can't wait to read the next installment and I'm buying my son Dino-Basketball and Dino-Baseball to finish up his collection.

This was a gift for my dinosaur-loving nephew, who pretty much requires that fictional stories about dinosaurs also include the scientific names. You end up with a kind of limited field of choices, but I'd seen these at the library. Football is the big local sport here, so that element and the dinosaurs were a good combination. The actual story/text is a little more simple than I'd like to see (compared to Jane Yolen-- but he has all her books), but he's happy and reading.

I really like this serious of books, my kids will grab them all and I will have to read each one as they lead into the next. My youngest son is into dinosaurs so this series is perfect for him. I like that they rhyme and the creative nature of the stories. I would recommend this book (and the others) to anyone who has kids who like dinosaurs.

We have been reading Dino-Sports (and soon to be Sports Entertainment) books since Dino-Hockey came out. We have them all and they are always a hit with both my boys who are 6 and 2. They opened Dino-Football at Valentine's Day and they were really excited about it. They were both eager to see what the next sport would be coming up on the last page. They were not disappointed.I don't know why I didn't think to write books about dinosaurs playing sports. It seems so obvious... a recipe for success. Lisa and Barry did another great job. We're looking forward to the next in the series. It should be a fun one.

My kids (9 and 6yrs) both love the Dino books by Lisa Wheeler and this Football edition was on my son's Christmas list this year! He loves these books and reads them over and over and over again!! They are really great books!!

My toddler loves these Dino books! They are witty and silly and perfect for little kids who love dinosaurs. There are so many of them you are bound to find one your kid likes. And there are girl dinosaurs too! Not just for boys :)

Great book, great rhymes with imagination to transform Dinos world into the gridiron that we see each Sunday. While we are not the biggest football fans, we enjoyed the story of these two teams locked in battle.

I've been reading a lot more Christian and inspirational books lately and I really wanted to read a book about the crucifixion for Easter weekend. I found this one and had never read anything by Max Lucado before, but know that he is a well-known author, so I purchased it and read it over Easter weekend.He Chose the Nails is a book about understanding why Jesus chose the nails and God's love for us. This book has 15 chapters, each with a different title and subject, and most of the chapters contain anecdotes from the author. Lucado uses his wit to help us see how everyday situations, such as the ones he describes, relate to God's love. Even though the author uses a witty tone to describe his personal experiences, the rest of the book is told in a serious and thought-provoking manner. Each chapter starts out with a couple Bible verses using various translations such as the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), The Living Bible (TLB), New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), as well as some others. There are also some quotations from authors and famous speakers that pertain to that particular chapter's subject.I really enjoyed this book and it is a great choice to read if you want to understand more about God's love for us and why Jesus chose the nails. It's fairly short and the book itself ends at 70%. The rest of the book is a study guide for each of the chapters. You could read this any time of the year but I found it particularly enlightening and thought-provoking to read during the Easter season. It helped me to understand how much God loves us and more about the Bible. I'd never read anything by Max Lucado before but I would like to check out some of his other books because I love how he writes and engages his readers. As always, another great book by Max Lucado. He captures your attention from the very moment you start reading the first page, or the introduction. Explaining the crucifixion of Christ, His sacrifice, he engages you in a way that you feel like you were there when all of this was happening and, at the same time, you examine with awe His sacrifice and experience the pain, the suffering He went through. Nothing less but to thank the Savior for His extreme love for you. So simple, yet so profound. Amazing reading. Enjoyed every page. Highly recommend this item.

I loved this book from Max Lucado. It really helped me understand why Jesus did what he did for me and everyone else. I definitely would say get this book and read it. Also has a study guide in the back for after your done reading. If I could give this 6 stars. I would.

The book is both humorous and serious. It is riveting to read, and hard to put down, or stop reading. An intense study guide for each chapter is in the back. An a very good read, especially for the Lenten Season.

The study was a good one. We have been doing several of Adam Hamilton's studies so we decided to switch it up a bit. It was well narrated and flowed very well. It can be done with the video or without. Very good analogies are used in the book and keeps it interesting.

I love the way Max Lucado writes because he brings out the tenderness of God toward people and makes everything here so personally relevant. Thank you, Max Lucado!

Loved this book. It opens my eyes to slot of things that have deep meaning to a Christian. Our freedoms of belief and worship are being challenged right now of . We have a Lord and Savior that came into this word and it wasn't much different but He changed it. What He suffered you and I can not know because he was our creator and we liked Him are standing for what is right and honorable but we've in a selfish word. It could be so much better if we worshipped and lived as He asks.

John Gottman is basically a love guru. He has studied thousands of relationships, and after several decades of clinical observation and study, he can predict with 97% accuracy if a couple will stay together or divorce.I read one of Gottman’s earlier books called The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work when my husband and I were having a rough time just after we were married. It absolutely changed the way I approached our relationship, and it helped us both better communicate so we could come together to work through our issues and move on. (We've been married 13 years now.)I was expecting good things from Eight Dates, and boy did it deliver. The book is divided into eight sections, one for each date. The dates cover eight of the most meaningful, important, and, often, contentious topics that couples deal with: trust and commitment, conflict, sex, money, family, fun and adventure, growth and spirituality, and dreams. Before the dates are introduced, an intro gives characteristics of successful marriages, as well as advice on how to have an intimate conversation and how to listen.There is SO MUCH interesting info in this book! I know not everyone is going to froth at the mouth over learning how couples interact with each other, but I seriously couldn’t get enough. It’s all so interesting to me, discovering what is “normal” and what actually creates a lasting connection, especially when it doesn’t necessarily match up with what I expected. Some of my favorite insights:*** Successful marriages have 20 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction.*** Sixty-nine percent of conflicts in most marriages will never be solved. The trick is to fight about (or let go of) these issues effectively.*** Eighty-percent of married couples have sex at least a few times a month. Of those, 32% have sex 2 to 3 times a week.*** Studies have shown that dual-career couples with young children spend only 10% of their evenings together, with most of that time spent discussing errands. (In other words, they have to work extra hard to keep that romantic spark alive…)*** The five most common subjects that couples fight about are money, sex, in-laws, alcohol or drug use, and parenting.*** Arguments about the unpaid work in a relationship (chores and childcare) tend to cause the most conflict.*** The eight most important elements of a successful marriage are fidelity, good sex, division of chores, adequate income, good housing, shared religious beliefs, shared interests, and children.*** Stay at home parents do about $90,000 worth of work per year. (#preach)*** An early indicator of the future success of a marriage happens during pregnancy and the birth of a child. If a husband (the study only involved heterosexual couples) is involved during pregnancy and birth, the marriage will be happier later on. Couples who play together, stay together. This includes experiencing laughter, excitement, anxiety, and curiosity, both separately and together.*** Conflict is how our relationships grow.*** It’s important for couples to share their dreams with each other. Keeping your dreams from your partner leads to bitterness, resentment, loss of passion and desire, and distance.*** Every person has a dream or life purpose, and it should never be sacrificed for the relationship. It’s possible for both people to achieve their dreams, just typically not at the same time.Is that too much to share? I seriously could go on and on. I just find this stuff fascinating.Practically speaking, this book is very user-friendly. It talks about each topic, summarizes the chapter, then lays out a date night plan complete with suggestions for how to prepare, where to go, problems to look out for, questions to ask, and an affirmation to say together at the end of the date. It’s intense but also very doable. My husband and I haven’t gone through each of these dates yet, but the ones we’ve done have been really interesting and made us feel more connected.In short, I’d recommend this book to any couple looking to take their relationship to the next level. This book shows couples how to get curious about each other and have intimate conversations that strengthen their relationship. It is appropriate for couples at any stage of relationship.The book was easy to read with a nice mix of research-backed discussion (citations provided in the endnotes), personal stories and case studies, exercises, and suggestions for how to conduct each of the eight dates. I especially appreciated all of the examples from the authors’ own relationships. I also liked the “Speed Dating” section of each chapter summarizing the important points—that will be helpful for later review. The URL mentioned in the ARC I reviewed did not lead to the correct website, but I found the referenced worksheets available to download (with no signup required) on the publisher’s website.I recommend this book for anyone interested in improving their romantic relationships, although it seems best suited for those in a committed, monogamous relationship. Note that both members of a couple need to read the book for the dates to work as designed.I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting, but the ARC appeared to be well edited and neatly formatted.

I came across this story of the Sofia because a sailing friend of mine, upon whose story my own second novel Waves: A Novel by Dave Bricker is modeled, had an encounter with the ship in the Caribbean during the 1970s. Though my account of that meeting is highly fictionalized (and as yet unpublished - look for "Currents" towards the end of 2011), I became intrigued with the story, and purchased this book to supplement my research.I cruised a small sailboat solo during the 80s and 90's, and though my own story is quite different from Pam Bitterman's, I can appreciate any book that approaches seafaring authentically. Times have changed not only for tall ships, but for cruisers in general. There was a magic "golden age" of cruising that took place at the end of the twentieth century before "yachting" became a sport of the rich. "Shoestring sailors" odd-jobbing their way around the globe are fewer and farther between these days, and the remarkable stories of those people, places and times are worth telling. As a University professor, I see the concept of "just going" to be sadly inconceivable to young people today. That, in itself, is an important message. Likewise, if you go sailing, you'll have the best and worst times of your life. Sailing to the Far Horizon neither glosses over the seasickness, heat, dampness and hard work nor dwells on the almost unbelievably profound beauty of the best of the experience. It's measured and balanced.Though some have accused Bitterman of overwriting, there is a great tradition of Victorian seafaring literature by Conrad, Melville, Dana et al. As a sailor on a tall ship, it's only natural to write with some extra flourish. I found the prose to be an excellent balance between that tradition and today's postmodernist "get on with the story" style. Though the book is set in small type, rather tightly packed, it's well-edited and moves along articulately, without getting bogged down. As the Sofia took on no passengers, only crew, the story asks the reader to "learn the ropes" along the way, but does so without pedantry.Sifting through old photographs, log books and letters, to write and reconstruct any remarkable story is a difficult labor of love, especially when passing decades blend together people and places encountered along the way. Stories such as this are not written for the bestseller list; they are a gift from the writer to those lucky enough to receive them. This is what small presses and self-publishing are all about.

As engaging of a sail adventure tale if there ever were. I was transfixed throughout the book and really didn't want it to end especially as it did.But with all things in life, good tales, good times and often good ships do indeed come to an end.Although true there could had been better editing. And also true the author's use of language is a bit strained and over done but given that this is her first book and the tale she tells is so fascinating and fun I was more than willing to overlook problems in the interpretation of the adventure. I'm just glad she took the effort to put the only accounting of the ship 35 years after it's demise. It made me wish that I hadn't waited so long before sailing in my own life.The biggest suggestion would be to add many more photographs which is so much cheaper in Kindle than printed form.More information on the tales of Sofia in the authors own words can be heard in a very good episode of David Anderson's "Sailing Podcast". She is an even better story telling orallyThe story she has to tell will make you want to join a tall ship commune...or not.

Ms. Sisman's book is a thrilling account recalling the rich tradition of 19th century nautical fiction and travelogues of Melville and Dana, or the rich evocative canvasses of Turner. Like so many restless wanderers in search of themselves, Pamela's memoirs recount an epic journey to exotic ports of call and encounters with people who, without the trappings of our 21st century mall-saturated American culture, manage to maintain serenity, sanity and dignity. At the same time, the book recalls the 70's and the youthful quests all but lost to the "Baby Boom" generation.I recommend this book to anyone who's fascinated with the sea, with travel articles and memoirs, and to anyone who has ever suffered a traumatic experience and lived to move on. This was my dad's favorite book and I was with him during the research and witnessed multiple transplants. Dr. Cooley is still alive and has written a few of his own books. It may be a cable series in 2016.

Hearts turned up on a Wall St Journal "Best Five Books About Medicine" type of list, sounded interesting. Chronicles a fascinating period of time, mostly in Houston, when heart surgery, especially heart transplants, came into mass consciousness. Protagonists Debakey and Cooley are both fascinating, driven characters. A glimpse of things to come for author Thomas Thompson. He went on to write two magnificent true accounts of crimes, Blood and Money, and Serpentine.

When i graduated from nurng school in 1967, Methodist in HOuston wss a leader in.CV surgery My critical care instructor trained there and Dr Debakey was the bomb It is ery interesting to learn more about the programs and personalities involved.

The author has written an excellent book about the great heart surgeons of Houston. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with doctors would enjoy reading this book. Consider

Fascinating insight into two unique characters during a critical time in medical history. Well told by someone with rare access. An epilogue summarizing progress since the end of that initial transplant era would be a good addition.

Like all Thompson's books, this is another page-turner. A wonderfully written tome to the early days of Drs. DeBakey & Cooley.

I gave my old copy away to a dear friend. I was relieved to find another in the same condition. A good and readable history of an amazing era in medical history.

A very thorough account of the development of cardiac surgery.
