Asimov, who died in 1992 and whose influence can hardly be exaggerated, is ill-served by this work, two-thirds of which consists of book introductions and editorials he wrote for Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. The fiction included here, though a decidedly mixed bag (several pieces are short-shorts whose long-term value is dubious), includes two of Asimov's most important late stories, "Cal" and the title story. "Cal" is one of several tales here in which a robot's use of a word processor has unexpected consequences, but it stands above the others (such as "Fault-Intolerant") because Cal is as vibrant as the humans in the story. The Hugo-winning "Gold," meanwhile, in which a "compu-drama" director agrees to adapt an SF novel to the new medium, is by itself worth the price of this book. The two nonfiction sections, by contrast, are sloppily compiled ("Suspense" is the first part of a two-part editorial not continued here, for instance). Additionally, several of the editorials, by referring to stories published in the magazine but not here, have lost much of their effectiveness. A volume of Asimov's uncollected fantasy stories is promised by HarperPrism for 1996; one wishes that this book had included those stories instead of the nonfiction here. I absolutely cannot believe I’m giving this one three stars. This is the final book in the series and I would have hoped for it to end with a bang rather than a whimper. I would have loved it if Annie and Max had decided to close everything down and sail around the world or maybe they find themselves expecting a child – just something – rather than this non-ending ending. Max has deteriorated to the point that I almost didn’t recognize him – he is such a wimpy, uninteresting fellow. Annie too has become a wimp and has lost her determination. So, I guess I have to say that, given the quality of this book, it is time for the series to end and it is a sad ending indeed for a much-loved series.The book is a normal size, but a portion at the end is taken up with the content of the Chapbooks that are being written by Henny, Laurel, and Emma. I will definitely NOT miss those three because they are becoming very tiresome. At the beginning of the book, you also have a number of pages taken up with a ‘Cast of Characters’ and a ‘timetable’ that is totally unnecessary. So, you have the middle portion left for the actual story.The mystery itself is okay, but you just don’t come to care about the characters. In previous books you would have come to really know and understand the characters – maybe there were just too many suspects. For some of the suspects, we probably had a total of 5 or 6 lines dealing with them – Curt Roundtree is a prime example of that. Also, the first murder didn’t even occur until something like 100-pages into the book. As I said, the mystery was an okay mystery, but I just never felt invested in any of the victims or suspects.Frankly, I almost felt that this book was written by another author – not only a different author who hadn’t written any of the previous books but one who hadn’t read them either. I was really disappointed in the wrap-up for the series.

This is the last of Carolyn Hart's,Death on Demand series.I usually really get into her Annie and Max Darling's mysteries,but this one was very slow in grabbing my interest.The second half of the book,is much better than the first half.The story revolves around a trust,and the current trustee,Ves Roundtree.After someone tries to kill Ves,the Darlings are pulled into the investigation.Parts of the story,sounds like Agetha Christie's,Then There were None.Different people who would split the trust,once Ves is dead,start to be killed or attempts are made on their lives.I almost only gave this only 3 stars,but the last half of the book saved unit.

I just adore the series following Max and Annie Darling and their family and friends. This book was a joy to read.A new, to me, character Ves Roundtree 'knows' that someone is walking on her grave. She asks Annie and Max for their help. Deaths occur and Ves is absconded with. Wow, time is becoming critical as the suspects grow.Was it a suicide? Or, could it have been murder? This and other questions fill your mind as you race with the 'Incredible Trio' and the Darlings to solve these crimes.As per usual there is an interesting twist to the tale. No, I'm not going to tell you. This book is worthy of your enjoyment in reading it. Have fun!

Carolyn Hart's "Death on Demand" series never disappoints as "cozy" mysteries. The stories are always different, as are the plots even though you can depend on your favorite characters. What is nice is that a good mystery is told without gratuitous language and violence. I have enjoyed every one, finish them to quickly, then I am tortured waiting for the next. I recommend this particular series for anyone who enjoys a nice locale, good characters and different plot lines.

It was wonderful to return to Browards Rock to spend time with Annie and Max. An added bonus was having Laurel, Henny and Emma around as well. This was a solid story with believable characters and just enough twists to feed to the desire to continue reading.

This was a wonderful read. It took me 2 days. I really missed Annie Darling & her husband Max, & am waiting patiently for the next installment!!

Carolyn Harts books are always a pleasure to read. Love her style of writing and all the many references back in time. They are simply delightful and engaging on so many levels. Just plain entertaining and fun.

This wonderful new guide is a welcome and outstanding contribution to histories of the Texas Hill Country. It is a journey through time and space that, in my opinion, is destined to become a classic.A tribute to the heritage of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County, this book offers both architectural and historic details of each selected structure, with information about its builder, occupants, uses, and relationship to the larger community. The author combines exhaustive research with an obvious love and mastery of his subject. It must have been a challenge to synthesize massive amounts of technical and arcane information into an easily-accessible and well-written portable guidebook. Mr. Hafertepe succeeds admirably.Also included are outstanding recent color photographs of 210 sites, beginning with the symbolic Fredericksburg Vereins-Kirche replica and ending with the Texas White House at the LBJ National Park in Stonewall. These photographs of existing structures in town and county create a record of independent merit that is well worth the guide's price. You will want to savor the text, too, but a slow pace is necessary to avoid being overwhelmed by the abundance of detail. I highly recommend you select a short route (it is easy to follow the book's excellent sequencing and clear addresses), read each entry in advance, then take the guide and a larger town map with you on your tour. Fredericksburg's historic streets make walking a pleasure.Personal note: I have a home in the historic district (it gets two sentences in the book, woo hoo!) and have spent many hours walking along Main Street and throughout town, usually being towed by my dog. I cannot count the times I've wondered about places I pass. This book is exactly what I would have requested. I am overjoyed that the author and publishing team had the dedication, perseverance, and expertise to create it (I only wish I knew more about my house!). I can vouch for the difficulty of taking good photographs of most of these structures and hope the photographer was not squished like a bug by a vehicle or pedestrian somewhere along Main Street.Kudos also go to Texas A&M University Press for a beautifully-crafted, sturdy travel guide. I intend to test its durability until one of us wears out. TAMU Press field guides are always excellent, and this one is a star among stars.Finally, to Professor Hafertepe: DANKE SEHR! One copy of your guide is already well-thumbed. My reserve copy resides in the fine company of Terry Jordan's Texas Graveyards and his father's Yesterday in the Texas Hill Country, a spot it well deserves.
