Love this book! My son who is in kindergarten couldn’t read. But by week 7 in this book he can now read sentences. It teaches 3 new words every week and has you do 5 different things with the same words every week to help you remember them. Would give this book more stars if I could.

Love this book!! This book focuses on what are called "sight words" These are words that traditionally cannot be, or are hard to sound out. According to today's educationally standard, each Kindergartener is required to learn certain sight words. The goal of this workbook, by the end of each week to: (1) read, (2) write three new sight words and (3) understand their meanings.This book represented about 90% of the sight words my child was required to know by the end of her kindergarten year; each school district's list is slightly different. This book is a fair reflection of Kindergarten's sight words.The book has 180 days or 36 weeks of activities. The words and activities get progressively harder. Each week the book introduces three new sight words, such as "big", "when" and "there". The week's individual activities are as follows:(1) On the first day of the week, the child is introduced to and learns 3 sight words. Day 2, the child in expected to locate or find the words in a variety of ways, such as, a word search game. Day 3, the book provides creative and fun activities, such as "color all words yellow that are labeled "big"." Day 4, the child is directed to read a sentence and place the correct sight word in the _____ blank space within the sentence. And finally, day 5, the child is directed to compose one or two sentences using ALL the sight words. For example, write a sentence about the picture below using the words "big", "when" and "there".I began this book at the start of Kindergarten and was able to finish just before the end of the school year. My child's class did not start doing sight words until the end of the first semester, and they learned about 60 sight words during the year. Had I not started early she would not have completed the book by the time they were completed at school. They moved quickly!! I used this book to give her a head-start and to supplement her school's sight word list.

My 3 year old (soon to be 4) knew quite a few sight words when looking at flash cards, but often stumbled when she came across them in books. She loves the associated activities. I laminated the flash card pages and cut them out. We review them daily and I can honestly say her reading fluency has taken off. She is able to independently read most of the Bob Book collections and mini reads that come with the kindergarten homeschool curriculum she is working on. I’ll definitely be purchasing the 1st grade addition.

I use this for my daughter's home school. It helps her learn new vocabulary. She is learning all kinds of words!

Only been using 2 weeks and we are already seeing an improvement!!!

This book is great. I like the week by week format and the way it incorporates the words over the course of the lesson. I use it for homeschooling my 5 year old.

This is nice to have for my daughter on our summer road trips

Not a review of today's perfume world--rather older versions. Delightful quiz on identifying your "perfume type"--however, I tended to like themes from many of them! Also recipes on making your own scented perfumes, scented paper, scented ink.

Nice introduction to home perfume making. For those of you complaining that this is not a natural perfume book, the book clearly says that it is not; however, the methods and formulas are the same. The suggestions are intriguing but I've found that the author's site and company are no longer around but there are others out there.

This book covers, in detail, many of the bases for creating scents of your own. It goes over the most common scent crafting basics, detailed descriptions of certain scents, gives recipes, and gives many other resources and commercial scent descriptions. All around a win, especially if you're just starting out or a hobbyist.

I'm a total newbie to playing in splashes, colognes, etc., and am finding this to be a very interesting and useful guide. I'm having quite a wonderful time trying the recipes and "how to's" in it.

This book presents very good arguments in favor of writing nonfiction as the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.I'll admit that I'm biased and I'm probably not the target audience for this book. I write nonfiction, but mostly fringe, New Age, and BOTS (based on a true story) books. I'm writing with a deliberate slant, and my goal is as much to entertain my readers as to inform them.So, though the subtitle of this book says its "the complete guide to writing creative nonfiction from memoir to literary journalism and everything in between," I felt as if the author placed clear and narrow limits on how "creative" nonfiction can be. I'm sure that, from his viewpoint, permitting Dewey Decimal Classification 398 (including folklore, fairy tales, and ghost stories) was a grave error.I wanted to like this book, and I'm sure it's a bible for people who want to write gritty stories about real life, including tragedies and tales of redemption. However, even the examples in this book were depressing, albeit well-written (or perhaps because they're so well written.)If you love reading books by authors like Steinbeck, Normal Mailer, and Hemingway, you're sure to like this book. If you'd describe yourself as a "cynic," this book is your cup of tea.For me, this book clarified the kind of writer I am by showing me the kind of writer I'm not... and absolutely, positively, never want to become. Bring on the musical comedies! Give me P. G. Wodehouse!

There is something artistically beautiful about how the author (who I do not personally know) interwove instruction and example into a stunning tapestry.To give weight to my praise, one of my books was on Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2002 and my most recent book was on Kirkus Reviews' Best Books of 2014 (Behind the Lines by Jeffrey B. Miller). I picked up Lee Gutkind’s book because I've been struggling with my most recent book and decided I needed to have a refresher course in creative nonfiction. The book has not only reminded me of some sound fundamentals, but it has given me many new perspectives on how to creatively tell a story. Best of all, it has truly re-energized me to my project.

Gutkind is described as the father of creative non-fiction and this book demonstrates why. While I know what creative non-fiction is, I had never seen a text that so clearly organized the issues and challenges involved in it. I strongly recommend.

An excellent book about the actual process of writing creative non-fiction. This book is filled with real world examples. I found a take-away on almost every page. A lot of books on this subject are filled with fluff, and avoid the actual content and structure of the writing. This book really shows you the nuts and bolts of writing creative non-fiction. Highly recommended.

A thoughtful and realistic discussion of writing creative non-fiction. The essays examples are helpful and the discussions are enlightening. As an essayist, I find this a must-read. Lee Gutkind's book is a straight-forward, practical guide to writing essay.

Creative nonfiction is a style popular in journalism today, and the style I prefer (as an editor and publisher) for memoirs and other nonfiction—this is a definitive book on what creative nonfiction is and how to write it. I read this book in preparation for a workshop I presented at the Writers on the Rock conference. A colorfully-written book, by the expert on the subject, that includes many examples and exercises.

I want to use this as a textbook for a class. I wish it had more formal "assignment" guidelines for undergraduates. I'll come up with something, though, because the "bones" are here.

Lee Gutkind is THE expert who knows how to teach writing creative non-fiction in a fun and memorable way. I would recommend this to everyone writing non-fiction.

Great guidance for anyone who wants to write memoir or any other kind of narrative nonfiction. Lee is the King. If you are drawn to this type of writing, you should also check out the quarterly magazine Creative Nonfiction. It is a high quality literary magazine that is always going a step higher. I eagerly look forward to my copy every few months.

Finally, a book my emerging (and somewhat reluctant) reader enjoys! The illustrations are lovely, the story and the characters are well done, and the writing is engaging and approachable without being dumbed down. There are a few words my son has needed help with (such as thoughtful, certainly, magnificent, described) but they're in there just enough for a challenge to push the level. Very well done, we have since purchased all available books.

My daughter is starting to read chapter books and she loves this series so far. The print is larger and the pages are all illustrated with black and white drawings. There are a few words she does not normally encounter at school, such as "scampered" but for the most part she can read these on her own and she enjoys the storyline.

This is a great book for kids that have started to be interested in chapter books. Short, eventful chapters with easy to follow story lines. Both male and female main characters. Good for 1st or 2nd Graders. A good 2nd grade reader might be able to go through this book in a single afternoon. Ogres, fairies, mermaids, dragons, princes... and a healthy relationship between parents and children. They are easy to read aloud too. Fun!

I was having trouble finding books my son would want to read. He was 8 when I found these and a little behind in his reading. I wanted something that would be interesting enough to keep him engaged. As far as the story line goes, I would not rate it very high but I'm not the one reading it so that doesn't really matter. My son fell in love with the book and so far it is the only series that he wants to read and enjoys reading. If your child enjoys adventure and a little mystery then they will love these books too.

My 1st grade granddaughter loves this series. I got the first one thinking I'd buy more if she liked it but she already had her mom check out the rest and I think she's read all 13 by now...since Christmas.

We are just introducing our son to chapter books, and I wasn't sure what we would find. These seem to be great stories (he is on book 4 right now). They have simple plots, but enough details to keep him interested. He always wants us to read more at the end of story time, and I think that is great. There is also both male and female characters, something not all authors pull off well.

I can't actually say I have read this as my 7 year old reads them before I get a chance to read them to him. He scoops up these books and reads them instantly. They are easy reads, true, but the point is he won't put them down until they are done. Which usually takes him a couple of days. We have lots of books that he enjoys but not that he consumes so aggressively as these.

My niece loves these books! She is finishing third grade. She loves to read and can read a book from this series in a hour! I can't buy them fast enough for her!

Bought this book as I had heard our station here (WU.CC, 99.9) do a book review on their program called, "Between the pages." I thought this would be an easy read as I love my pastors but I found there was a lot to learn about being God's Armor Bearer. It convicted me and I had to repent for some of the things I had been doing wrong and had a bad heart attitude toward my pastor I didn't see until I read this book. Thankful for men who are not afraid to tell us what we can do and should do as men and women who are under our pastors care, prayers, souls being watched over and being on board with their vision, especially when you don't get it, see it, feel it should be done a different way. Mr. Nance has written a great book and I would recommend this for each believer who has a pastor. Yes, that is you reading this. We need our pastors and God loves unity and works through it. He can't move when we are divided. That is the enemy who wants that. Our pastors need our help, prayers, support and love. Buy this book! You will love it.

I give all the Armor Bearer books a 5 star rating except this one for a reason. It is to catch the attention of you- another possible purchaser. I purchased volume 1. I then purchased this since vol 2 is no longer easy to find. When I set the vol1 and 2 book next to my vol 1 book I noticed it to be obviously thinner. Why is volume 1 and 2 combined smaller than volume 1 by itself??? Answer: In short they reorganized volume 1 and deleted several sections in the process. There is little or no new material in the combined book. This should have been made known in the synopsis of the book but is not. In short: Buy volume 1 and get a great book which I have read and enjoy! Skip volume 2 and I am just now purchasing volume 3. Hope its not a reorganization of the sections they deleted in this book LOL.

My new Pastor recommended this book to me. As an Associate Minister from another church I recently moved from; this book showed me things that I had already experienced but more importantly this book gave me the explanation of what I had experienced! I read this book as a requirement for a job application for a Christian ministry and was not really sure what to expect.I was pleasantly surprised by the book and really appreciated the insights given by the associate pastor who authored the book. I have grown up as "PK" or pastor's kid and have seen many rebellious and independent minded parishoners over the years wreak havoc in the church. They had an agenda and were going to pursue it no matter what leadership thought about it or what the church staff may have felt the leading of the Lord was for the congregation.If you are not an associate pastor or other lay person on staff at a church you may have to think a little harder how this book applies to you as you read it but it is worth the extra effort. The idea of honoring the very responsibility laden position pastors have with support, prayer and loyalty is a lesson for all of us. If we laid our personal agendas down and instead offered loyal service to our pastors we can fully expect God to honor us and fulfill our purpose here on the earth.I feel that many people out of fear believe that if they do not MAKE their ministry happen it will be lost but Jesus said we must lose our lives to find them. I think this is the essence of what Mr. Nance is saying an armorbearer must do.I know there are some negative reactions against this book but I caution that the author clearly states that this book is written for church members working with Godly pastors who are in obedience to the Word and not people operating completely outside of the Word of God and truth. This is a great series! My son is really into sports and learning about the game. Since he is so young these books are a perfect introduction to the rules of the game. Sports plus dinosaurs, what more could a young boy want.

I stumbled upon Lisa Wheeler's Dino-sports books at our local library. My five year old's interest are pretty specific, he likes dinosaurs and dangerous creatures. So, I have to scour the library to find anything that fits the bill. We first read Dino-Baseball and Dino-Soccer. He loved them so much I bought Dino-Hockey on Amazon as a surprise. I got Dino-Soccer too. Dino-Football was released in August this year and I did a pre-order for it. Jack has made me read these for OVER a week now exclusively at bedtime. I beg and plead for him to pick something else out..anything. He just laughs! On top of the awesome writing the illustrations are hilarious. Wheeler and Gott are a DYNAMITE team. Can't wait to read the next installment and I'm buying my son Dino-Basketball and Dino-Baseball to finish up his collection.

This was a gift for my dinosaur-loving nephew, who pretty much requires that fictional stories about dinosaurs also include the scientific names. You end up with a kind of limited field of choices, but I'd seen these at the library. Football is the big local sport here, so that element and the dinosaurs were a good combination. The actual story/text is a little more simple than I'd like to see (compared to Jane Yolen-- but he has all her books), but he's happy and reading.

I really like this serious of books, my kids will grab them all and I will have to read each one as they lead into the next. My youngest son is into dinosaurs so this series is perfect for him. I like that they rhyme and the creative nature of the stories. I would recommend this book (and the others) to anyone who has kids who like dinosaurs.

We have been reading Dino-Sports (and soon to be Sports Entertainment) books since Dino-Hockey came out. We have them all and they are always a hit with both my boys who are 6 and 2. They opened Dino-Football at Valentine's Day and they were really excited about it. They were both eager to see what the next sport would be coming up on the last page. They were not disappointed.I don't know why I didn't think to write books about dinosaurs playing sports. It seems so obvious... a recipe for success. Lisa and Barry did another great job. We're looking forward to the next in the series. It should be a fun one.

My kids (9 and 6yrs) both love the Dino books by Lisa Wheeler and this Football edition was on my son's Christmas list this year! He loves these books and reads them over and over and over again!! They are really great books!!

My toddler loves these Dino books! They are witty and silly and perfect for little kids who love dinosaurs. There are so many of them you are bound to find one your kid likes. And there are girl dinosaurs too! Not just for boys :)

Great book, great rhymes with imagination to transform Dinos world into the gridiron that we see each Sunday. While we are not the biggest football fans, we enjoyed the story of these two teams locked in battle.

I've been reading a lot more Christian and inspirational books lately and I really wanted to read a book about the crucifixion for Easter weekend. I found this one and had never read anything by Max Lucado before, but know that he is a well-known author, so I purchased it and read it over Easter weekend.He Chose the Nails is a book about understanding why Jesus chose the nails and God's love for us. This book has 15 chapters, each with a different title and subject, and most of the chapters contain anecdotes from the author. Lucado uses his wit to help us see how everyday situations, such as the ones he describes, relate to God's love. Even though the author uses a witty tone to describe his personal experiences, the rest of the book is told in a serious and thought-provoking manner. Each chapter starts out with a couple Bible verses using various translations such as the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), The Living Bible (TLB), New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), as well as some others. There are also some quotations from authors and famous speakers that pertain to that particular chapter's subject.I really enjoyed this book and it is a great choice to read if you want to understand more about God's love for us and why Jesus chose the nails. It's fairly short and the book itself ends at 70%. The rest of the book is a study guide for each of the chapters. You could read this any time of the year but I found it particularly enlightening and thought-provoking to read during the Easter season. It helped me to understand how much God loves us and more about the Bible. I'd never read anything by Max Lucado before but I would like to check out some of his other books because I love how he writes and engages his readers. As always, another great book by Max Lucado. He captures your attention from the very moment you start reading the first page, or the introduction. Explaining the crucifixion of Christ, His sacrifice, he engages you in a way that you feel like you were there when all of this was happening and, at the same time, you examine with awe His sacrifice and experience the pain, the suffering He went through. Nothing less but to thank the Savior for His extreme love for you. So simple, yet so profound. Amazing reading. Enjoyed every page. Highly recommend this item.

I loved this book from Max Lucado. It really helped me understand why Jesus did what he did for me and everyone else. I definitely would say get this book and read it. Also has a study guide in the back for after your done reading. If I could give this 6 stars. I would.

The book is both humorous and serious. It is riveting to read, and hard to put down, or stop reading. An intense study guide for each chapter is in the back. An a very good read, especially for the Lenten Season.

The study was a good one. We have been doing several of Adam Hamilton's studies so we decided to switch it up a bit. It was well narrated and flowed very well. It can be done with the video or without. Very good analogies are used in the book and keeps it interesting.

I love the way Max Lucado writes because he brings out the tenderness of God toward people and makes everything here so personally relevant. Thank you, Max Lucado!

Loved this book. It opens my eyes to slot of things that have deep meaning to a Christian. Our freedoms of belief and worship are being challenged right now of . We have a Lord and Savior that came into this word and it wasn't much different but He changed it. What He suffered you and I can not know because he was our creator and we liked Him are standing for what is right and honorable but we've in a selfish word. It could be so much better if we worshipped and lived as He asks.

The dates cover eight of the most meaningful, important, and, often, contentious topics that couples deal with: trust and commitment, conflict, sex, money, family, fun and adventure, growth and spirituality, and dreams. Before the dates are introduced, an intro gives characteristics of successful marriages, as well as advice on how to have an intimate conversation and how to listen.There is SO MUCH interesting info in this book! I know not everyone is going to froth at the mouth over learning how couples interact with each other, but I seriously couldn’t get enough. Couples who play together, stay together. This includes experiencing laughter, excitement, anxiety, and curiosity, both separately and together.*** Conflict is how our relationships grow.*** It’s important for couples to share their dreams with each other. Keeping your dreams from your partner leads to bitterness, resentment, loss of passion and desire, and distance.*** Every person has a dream or life purpose, and it should never be sacrificed for the relationship. It’s possible for both people to achieve their dreams, just typically not at the same time.Is that too much to share? I seriously could go on and on. I just find this stuff fascinating.Practically speaking, this book is very user-friendly. It talks about each topic, summarizes the chapter, then lays out a date night plan complete with suggestions for how to prepare, where to go, problems to look out for, questions to ask, and an affirmation to say together at the end of the date. It’s intense but also very doable. My husband and I haven’t gone through each of these dates yet, but the ones we’ve done have been really interesting and made us feel more connected.In short, I’d recommend this book to any couple looking to take their relationship to the next level. Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love is a new book by marriage experts John and Julie Gottman. The book aims to encourage couples to "date" each other in order to strengthen their marriages. As the title suggests, Gottman and Gottman provide resources for eight dates which primarily focus on essential conversations to have with each other. . Each chapter provides background information on the topic including why it is an essential conversation and why the topic is important for a long, lasting marriage. At the end of the chapter a list of questions is provided along with suggestions for a date.This is a book where ideally each spouse has a copy or has a copy they can easily share. For this reason, the hardbound copy would be a better purchase. While useful for couples of all ages, couples still in the earlier years of their relationship will benefit the most from this resource. This book shows couples how to get curious about each other and have intimate conversations that strengthen their relationship. It is appropriate for couples at any stage of relationship.The book was easy to read with a nice mix of research-backed discussion (citations provided in the endnotes), personal stories and case studies, exercises, and suggestions for how to conduct each of the eight dates. I especially appreciated all of the examples from the authors’ own relationships. I also liked the “Speed Dating” section of each chapter summarizing the important points—that will be helpful for later review. The URL mentioned in the ARC I reviewed did not lead to the correct website, but I found the referenced worksheets available to download (with no signup required) on the publisher’s website.I recommend this book for anyone interested in improving their romantic relationships, although it seems best suited for those in a committed, monogamous relationship. Note that both members of a couple need to read the book for the dates to work as designed.I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting, but the ARC appeared to be well edited and neatly formatted.
