This is a nice selection of entries from the short but fascinating life of Isabelle Eberhardt who begins her journal on January 1st, 1900 on an island in the Mediterranean sea with introspection that reminds me of the best of Henry Miller's Tropics and Rimbaud's season in hell. Born in Switzerland, Eberhardt traveled widely, in Tangiers and Arabia, often dressed as a boy and converted to the Muslim religion. Tales of travel and sexual adventures abound and make you want to read the complete set of her existing journals. Many of her writings were lost in the flash flood which took her life in 1904. What survived is amazing as well as tantalizing. One of the most unique women in modern times.

This is a book I remembered for 30 years and went back one day recently to find. I was not disappointed although I can see why this book appealed to me so strongly as a 20 year old. Isabelle is an amazing writer. Like the writers of haiku, Isabelle captures the beauty of the desert around her and her feelings about her life in so few words and yet so beautifully. Her love of her adopted country and religion season her view and experience of life. One might wish she had had a happier time of it or been a little better at making a living, but overall this brief book is an amazing contribution to the world by a very unusual person. I highly recommend it.

Recently saw a new opera based on this. I think the diarist's story is well served by reading her stuff and also seeing it performed. The glossary of foreign words was a big help.

I agree totally with one of the other reviewers that this is pretty bad. I too, usually enjoy reading and learning about women of the Victorian era that went and did things out of the norm or traveled to exotic locals solo which was also at the time considered not proper. But this, this is just pointless. These rambling essays and random thoughts are so disjointed, uninteresting, all over the place chronologically and half the time just simply make no sense at all. This is the second book of Eberhardts journal notes that I've read, this one I just couldnt finish. I regret ordering all of her books at once and now do not even plan on reading the others. As I said in the other review that I did for Eberhardts "Prisoner of Dunes', if one publisher put all the books into one and put her thoughts or essays in chronological order it would at least present better. However, these entries are just so unimportant, uninteresting, and offer dull, boring, trivial information that has the reader fast asleep. I absolutely love and devour travel narrative books written by or about adventures in the Middle East, but I just could not wade through this drivel. I was highly disappointed after eagerly awaiting to read them, and often while reading kept thinking "what is the point of all this?". I plan to resell all these books I bought and hope to recoup some of my money back.

This book is absolutely sincere and beautiful. A jewel.

I expected to really enjoy this book as I found the subject fascinating and new to me. Unfortunately, the stilted writing and the lack of substance made it unreadable. I think a book about this woman's life with quotes interjected would be more interesting than this rambling collection of thoughts. I'm very disappointed.

An exciting book to read.

Mostly dull and in third person

The singular optimism expressed in this book is remarkable, all the more because of its settings - chapters are set in some of the most devastating disasters in recent history. They include the earthquakes in San Francisco and Mexico City; London during the blitz, New York on 9/11 and New Orleans when Katrina hit. She makes the contrarian point that masses of people actually behave quite well, with courage and altruism when disasters hit, but often times the elites panic, desperate to preserve or re instate the inequalities they have long fostered. Her point, and it is very well documented here, is that the "stiff upper lip" that the Brits showed during the Blitz, was not unique to British culture, but rather the norm in disasters. The author shows that we often exhibit a co operative "help each other out" mentality in the face of real disaster and wonders why we are not able to maintain it. But she also suggests that in some ways we do. This is a broad book, that cites many different examples and may be fairly criticized for not following through on the aftermath of each one. I think such a choice would have required Solnit to focus entirely on one event. If you would prefer that approach try Rising Tide, John Barry's masterpiece of the 1927 Mississippi River. Highly recommended.

Everyone in Los Angeles needs to read this book before the next big earthquake. In fact, all Americans should be reading this book to counteract the myth of the rioting, murderous, panicking, selfish people who will go berserk during a disaster and need the government and troops to control them and restore order. When the actual disasters are studied, as in this amazing book, the reality is that people come together in close community and direct their own rescue, survival and distribution of resources with a feeling of altruism, generosity, self-sacrifice, and love. As you read through you see that most of the panicking and selfish behavior is coming from the Elites and the government who are greatly disturbed by the people getting along without them. Often when they do intervene it is to the detriment of the devastated community, and sociologists refer to it as "Elite Panic".Disasters covered include the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the Mexico City Earthquake, the Managua Nicaragua Earthquake, New York City 9/11, and New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina amongst other disasters. Unfortunately for Hollywood Movies, Anya Rand followers, and selfish promoters of I will survive at your expense, the general public is humane, helpful, and caring. The apocalypse, world disasters and other fear based mythology about the animal nature of mankind surging out to destroy civilization is just that: a useful tool for legitimizing government power. Read this book and perhaps we can replace the myth with the truth of our species. We are social, loving, caring and function best as community groups. It is in relationship to others that we find our value.

Rebecca Skolnit's book should become important to us, because we already seem to be working our way through what could well become a whole series of disasters and catastrophes (thanks to the author for clarifying the distinction). It seems sociologists have been studying disasters for decades, and they've determined that in the face of sudden disaster, histories of specific events show that *the assumption that a collapse of the structures of authority and official response will result in mob behavior* is in terrible error -- it's a myth, an urban legend. Instead, it seems that our neighbors are much more likely to act altruistically and creatively. They are most likely to rapidly improvise ways to effect rescue, meet immediate needs and organize ad hoc encampments and communities that support survival and safety. Describing these grassroots social spaces and the negative reaction of authorities with a clear voice and generous dollops of humor and irony, Skolnit sees in these self-generated kitchens and aid stations a beautiful hint of what our lives could be, if left to our own devices. I love her voice -- and she's a riveting storyteller. On the other hand, the elites have left behind a marked, bloody history of foolish decisions, well-armed panic and overreaction, fed by a dangerous mythology of looting mobs. Skolnit has confirmed something that should be obvious to those of us who remember the lies we were fed by the media, later disproved: there's a difference between "requisitioning needed supplies" in an emergency and "opportunistic theft", which constitutes looting. Time and again, it seems elites have deployed martial forces against a population struggling to survive, help not particularly on the way.I loved reading the accounts of people's responses to Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy in comparison to events much earlier in the century, like The San Francisco Earthquake and the explosion of munitions in Halifax -- healthy, heroic parallels that are moving to read. It was good to see the heroism of women and underprivileged youngsters acknowledged. It was good to trace the philosophical underpinnings of our respective stances -- for and against 'the mob'. Initially interested in another of this author's titles, I HAD to read this one first, having been a first responder in years gone by. It spoke to my experience of bystanders' readiness to be of help -- or at least, to bear caring witness.PS -- Presently, I've got a student who, until recently, was studying to be a cop. This goal was called into question by events in Ferguson and the on-going struggle along the border -- but even more by *the increasingly general militarization of the police*. This is something he doesn't want to be a part of, so he's changed his major to sociology, without particularly knowing where to go with it. I'm thinking of buying my student this book. Maybe it will help him clarify things.

This book is about way more than what happens to people after disasters. It's a meditation on what people really want from their society and how periods of instability often reveal these truths. That when there's a disaster, power is often decentralized and individuals are free to improvise, to take agency in ways they may never have had to before. And the people in power experience "elite panic" which causes them to react in often counterproductive if not destructive ways. There are many beautiful messages in this book about human nature and its possiblilties. The only criticism I have is it can get repetitive. Some chapters are a bit long, particularly the one about New Orleans. But otherwise a great, transformative piece.

Rebecca Solnit is a combination of Joanna Macy and Joan Didion. We need that. She is a writer to be watched and listened to.Hope In the Dark is the name of one of her other books, and isn't that exactly what we need right now?

There are roughly three hundred pages in this large book filled with both black and white and color photos that capture this city that so many of us love from a distance and certainly even more so when we visit. I first became aware of Mr. Nicoletta’s work when I saw his most famous image, that of Harvey Milk with that great smile and necktie flapping, in a photo exhibit in a gay bar here in Atlanta—it had to have been the early 80’s. (I see a framed print every day of that same photograph that now hangs in an honored spot in my home.) The photographer at one time worked in Milk’s camera store in the Castro, so many of these wonderful images are of Harvey, his campaign and election as a San Francisco supervisor and the people involved in his life and campaign. Of course we also have photographs of the filming of “Milk” as well. Chuck Mobley is dead on in his introduction about Mr. Nicoletta’s photo of Josh Brolin as Dan White (p. 62): He describes it as a “moody portrait. . . saturated in menace and pathos.”I recognized a few well-known individuals in these many photos: Lily Tomlin, Mae West, Arthur Tress, John Waters, Divine, Allen Ginsberg, Harry Hay, Vito Russo, and a very young humpy Armistead Maupin. Most of the people, however, are ordinary people from San Francisco. And if the city did not invent drag, surely it was raised to an art form there as these photographs demonstrate. There is so much sorrow here, so much anger, but much, much more joy. And a lot of attitude and tattoos in the later images. Some of my favorites, at least for today: certainly the famous shot of Harvey in front of his camera store (p. 72), the heartbreaking photo of him and Mayor Moscone lying in state in San Francisco City Hall Rotunda, December, 1978 (p. 63), the White Nights riots demonstration after the verdict on Dan White (pp. 64-65), the tremendously moving photo of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus in a performance at the dedication of the Harvey Milk postage stamp on May 28, 2014 (pp. 70-71). I love the photo on page 271 of Jade and Nakita Ramsey as Veda and Vera and that of Mayor Willie Brown officiating at a huge group ceremony of a same sex marriage (p. 288). And I am much taken with the photograph of Scout, Castro Street, June 20, 2015 (p. 298). Of course there are dozens more to savor over and over. Finally I was reminded once again why e-books will never replace the real thing. This great coffee table book, weighing in at four and a half pounds, that is printed and laid out so beautifully smells wonderful too.A fantastic book.

I placed this book with Pride on my coffee table for all who enter my domain to see. It is the most amazing portrait of a community, a city and it's people from the streets, to the political pulpit and to my personally beloved flamboyant stages. Dan Nicoletta's eye captures it all and demonstrates the power of love and the commitment, the LGBT communities of San Francisco lived with in these critical times of our collective lives.

Gorgeous photos shot by an absolute expert eye transport you right into the scene that was the delicious insanity of 1970's and beyond SF in the Castro! While I was lucky enough to witness some of this, I wish I had moved to SF at 18 myself to work alongside Dan at the Castro Camera Shop. This opus showing us so much of the crescendo of the Queer Rights movement explodes on each page in marvelous detail and with loving tenderness. I can't wait for more volumes!!

Yes, there are new photographs, from the filming/screening of Milk. Get over it. Mr Nicoletta was a vital part of the authentic look/tone/history of that film and once you are finished with that very small introduction, you get page after glorious page of full-page pictures from the Castro (primarily). Seeing the history of a "counter-culture" so vividly and first-hand, is just wonderful. Cannot say enough about how's much I love this book.

A treasure...authentic talent Daniel had access to people and places that not one will ever again...if you were there, as we were, you will make all sorts of wonderful sounds as you turn the pages...if you were not there, well, then you'll wish you were because Dan captured the spirt with hi amazing talent. Yay Danny!

Daniel has been documenting the gay community in San Francisco since the 70s. Wonderful, seeing friends in the book. I was brought to tears many times because so many didn't survive AIDS.

Mr. Nicoletta is an amazing human and I am so glad he put this collection together. Took a stroll though my youth and enjoyed it through his lens.

This is a 150$ dollar book it’s beautiful!! The photographs are exquisite and so important. I truly love it
