As a Chicagoan, I have heard Handel conducted by the author; currently Director of the "Music of the Baroque" orchestra and chorus. She is also an excellent author, bringing things to life. Being a performing musician gives her a unique perspective. You get a real picture of 18th century London and Handel 's place in it. Also read her other book "Mozart 's Women" which is on Amazon.

I have had a great love for Handel's music for more than 50 years now. During those years I have had the good fortune to read a great many books about the man and his music, including all the obvious ones (30+). Yet here comes along a new journey through his musical life that is so different that it kept my eyes glued to my kindle and my ears glued to my stereo. Jane Glover has the gift of picking you up and dropping you right into the life of London of Handel's time and meet the characters that inspire/annoy/love him. You get to know many of the people around him, the interactions between them and the social times, peace, wars etc. Most of all, she makes you hum the music when she picks out the various arias and choruses of the many operas and oratorios, and while you're humming in your mind, makes you aware of some of their inner meanings you might not have thought of before. I am not a musician. I cannot even read music easily, but I know most of Handel's vocal music intimately. There is an immense love in the book of and for the music of this incredible genius that even to this day, many people write off as the man that just wrote the Water Music and Messiah. I would recommend this book to every lover of Handel's music. You will learn so much, and you will be so grateful. We owe Jane Glover a big THANK YOU.

Well told story of Handel’s life. Glover’s writing is both lyrical and informative, hardly surprising, I suppose, coming from a talented musician.
