I rate this book higher than the previous reviewer as the book is in fact a battlefield guide. As in previous guides by Mr. Uffindell, he provides a brief but comprehensive overview of the battle in question, then goes into the actual battlefield guides, tour by tour. All of this is of course meant for those who can travel to the battlefields, either in person or as armchair strategists who travel from home using Google Earth. I am lucky enough to have been able to go to this location in person on more than one occasion, and I can tell you that I wish I had Mr. Uffindell's book with me when I was there. Not only does he cover the battlefield of April-May 1917, the infamous disaster by General Nivelle, but also the much more successful Malmaison Offensive of October 1917, something that is hardly mentioned at all in any English language book.What may have thrown the previous reviewer off is that the initial attack in April only lasted a few days, April 16-18, then had a significant lull and did not pick up until 4-6 May. Two chapters of the guide are titled 16 April, covering the initial attack and the aftermath. The next 2 chapters cover the 5-6 May assault; there just wasn't much in between to cover. The next chapter is on the October assault. Unlike The Somme or Verdun, the Chamin des Dames was not a months long continuation battle.Believe me, this is a good book!

I knew this was a Battle Guide/Tour Book, but since there is a obvious lack of english material about the ill fated Nivelle Offensive, i decided to give this book a shot. Unforntunately i can't say that it was worth the money.the tour part of the book is problably ok but the military sections only gives the reader just superficial information about said subject with large chronological gaps between chapters. after reading the whole book i was left with the feeling that i just didn't know enough about the Nivelle Offensive of 1917. Recommended only for people who is going to tour the battlefield in France. i hope one day a compreensive book about the offensive will come out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this autobiography by Charlie Chaplin in his own words. It's an interesting and intriguing read about his life from his own perspective and first-hand knowledge of events that you cannot get from any biography. With him being a film maker, his writing style keeps you very interested and engrossed from beginning to finish. He truly lived a remarkable life. I love his very matter of fact way of presenting the events in his life. It definitely puts everything that happened to him in perspective.[SPOILER ALERT!]I especially loved reading the parts about him going unrecognized dressed as himself. He was humbled when he first found out how popular he truly was. He went unrecognized on a train until it became known he was on the train. He was even the last in line for the washroom and waited in line like everyone else. There was another time when he was in NY that a cab driver drove him around all night looking for a hotel. He was trying to avoid people at his hotel but all the hotels were full. The cab driver, not recognizing him, invited him to stay with him and his family. Charlie hesitated but decided to trust him. The cab driver and his family were very surprised and happy to have him stay there as their guest. The accommodations were humble but better than what he had as a boy in London so he didn't complain.As for the scandal in his life, he talks about it in a very matter of fact way. Even he admitted he wasn't a total angel. However, hearing it from his side, shame on the US press, legal system, and government for the way they treated him. He did not deserve that! With his first 2 divorces, his young naive wives were manipulated by greedy lawyers who just saw dollar signs. So they dragged his name through the mud and scandalized the whole thing to get as much out of him as they could. The Joan Barry trial and family court hearings were used by the FBI to try to tarnish his name further. He was thankfully cleared of all criminal charges. However, in family court, he wasn't so lucky. Blood tests proved he wasn't the father of Joan Barry's child; but they were inadmissible in court at that time. Therefore, with circumstantial evidence alone, he was ruled as the father and had to pay child support. Unbelievable! Today Joan Barry would have had stalking and harassment charges brought against her. What a nut!The Communist accusations were a huge miscarriage of justice. He was not a Communist aka enemy of the US. If he had joined a US political party, I believe he would have been a Liberal Democrat. He may have associated with Communists, but that's guilt by association. He had fans and friends who were Communists before it was considered a dirty word. And he didn't believe in snubbing them when it did become a dirty word. Charlie was a humanitarian. Nothing more! He wanted to help people and help make the world a better place by pulling down barriers. He promoted peace and pointed out the evils in this world to try to get people thinking about them. His hope was perhaps they would see the evils and do something to change things for the better. Nothing wrong with that. His films are still relevant today because they are about human nature. The reason they are so hilarious is because there is so much truth in them, even today. As he put it (paraphrasing), the only thing he was guilty of was being a nonconformist. Amen to that! He was a rebel. I admire that about him because I'm a bit of a rebel myself. It took a lot of courage for him to speak the truth.I'm just glad he was finally vindicated of all of this 20 years after he left the US. He received a lifetime achievement Academy Award in 1972 and was invited to the US to receive that award. However, this autobiography was written prior to that happening. Also, when the FBI files were released to the public 50 years later, there was no evidence found that proved he was a Communist either. Despite this, it just saddens and infuriates me that he was treated so poorly. Just imagine how many more films he might have made if he hadn't gone through all that. His three films after The Great Dictator were either boycotted or banned in the US for years. They are real gems! Great films that I am so glad I had the opportunity to watch and own copies of them.After reading about his near death experiences, he definitely had someone looking out for him. He had a sixth sense about his safety, even as a child, and had some near misses. That explains why he was an agnostic. With the experiences he had, he had to believe there was a higher power out there. He was saved, I believe, because he had a purpose. His movies speak for themselves in this case. He spoke the truth and gave laughter and hope when there was none.He was not only a great comedian, but also a great visionary and artist who had the courage to pave his own path and not conform to society's norms. Because of this, his movies will remain relevant for many years to come.

The first part of his youth was interesting and Great THEN something happened. The personality of the book just shuts DOWN. Chapter upon chapter reads like a diary of meetings and dinners and luncheons. Traveling and frustration to come up with a new movie. When it came to any personal Connections Zilch !! Paulet whom he married got 2 sentences on their break up. The others in his life got detailed descriptions of their teeth. A whole third of the book was his Political feelings and what he did with them. I have Not finished this very long and boring book. I am up to the last wife. I hope it ends with more Joy and much Less humdrum stuff I could have read on the Internet. Don't bother ! The Movie was so good with Robert Downey Jr. Invest in THAT !!!!

What a wonderful book! I believe it was the first book to clarify his birth place (Walworth London England) and that Charles Spencer Chaplin was his real name. There were crazy rumors that he was born in France or that he was Jewish and that he actually had an outlandish foreign name. I think that this book is vital for anyone who likes Charlie Chaplin, or just old Hollywood in general. After all Chaplin was the most famous man on earth in the early 1900's. I also think that this book is sorely underrated, most likely because there are so many hundreds of books written about him, that his autobiography seems like just a minor step. But what's better than hearing his own account, own words and thoughts about his own life? No one knows him better than himself, and this book is definitely vital for any Chaplin lover.

After seeing the movie Chaplin (which was a superb movie), I decided to purchase this autobiography of Charlie Chaplin. Before I purchased this book, I had considered other books about Charlie Chaplin but they were not written by Charlie Chaplin. This book is warm and honest and I enjoyed it so much, it was hard to put it down.This is a beautifully done autobiography of of a very special man Charlie Chaplin.

Fascinating to learn about his childhood. Although his childhood takes up slightly more than one third of the book I could not put the book down. He explains his process for writing, directing, producing, composing, etc.. A little too much name dropping, but I guess he had the right to be so proud of keeping company with Einstein, Churchill, Kings, etc. I now realize that many classic comedy routines actually came from Chaplin, for example the candy assembly line where Lucy couldn't keep up. That came from Chaplin. In all an amazing read.

How could it not be compelling to learn what a world-renowned genius entertainer has to say about himself? One does not need to take every word at face value in order to appreciate Chaplin's vivid writing and extraordinary rags to riches story - and well-deserved riches they were. On finishing the book I immediately read the Wicki biography and while there are many ugly details to his life, he was candid enough in his autobiography and was wise not to stuff it with every unpleasant incident and frenetic headline.How remarkable it is that he and his brother overcame their Dickensian childhood. He brings you into the story so well that it's a great relief to see him emerge into a life of material well-being and recognition as a great artist, bringing joy and laughter to millions all over the world. I'm moved to see his films all over again.

Well done, Carolyn Meyer. The story of the young Charles Darwin at home and on the Beagle is fully written in the form of a first person narrative. What I love about Carolyn Meyer's books is that they always compel me to read more on the subject. Her writing style and what she includes always piques my curiosity. This book is a great introduction to the life of Charles Darwin and I love also how Meyer brings to life his family including "The Sisterhood" his Wedgwood relatives and the interconnections between his world at home and the world out at sea. I enjoyed reading this and learned so much!

The item was excellent WHEN I recieved it. I paid extra postage to have it delivered in 2 days and did not receive it for 5 days. I was not given a refund on the extra postage nor did I recieve an email explaining the problem and giving me a new estimated time of arrival. NOT HAPPY!

As an older man, his pictures reveal a thin, white-bearded, imposing-looking figure. Charles Darwin built his reputation as an outstanding scientist and collector. His life's work was devoted to the study of nature and the development of theories that, in his time, made him the subject of controversy. Gentle, shy and ever curious, he seemed destined from childhood to enlighten those around him.Charley Darwin was born in the right place to pursue his avid interests in nature. In England's peaceful Shrewsbury district, with its lovely rivers and woods, he took every opportunity to be outside exploring. Being the youngest boy, with three older, hovering sisters, he was happily indulged. Even his older brother, Erasmus "Ras", had a keen interest in nature and often joined him in dragging back various specimens found in the area. His younger sister, Emily, along with the three older ones --- Marianne, Susan and Caroline --- adored their two brothers. When their mother died, the sisters took over the job of "mothering" eight-year-old Charley --- especially the oldest, Caroline. Though loving, she was also strict in trying to discipline him in his education.Charley's father, a physician with a very successful practice, had great expectations for young Charles, hoping he also would go into medicine. Though Charley had excellent communication with patients and was clever with medicinal formulas, it was not the life he wanted. He had been very unhappy with his time in the Shrewsbury boarding school, and when his medical studies did not work out, his father decided he was more fit for the clergy. At Christ's College, though, he finished his degree, still drawn to botany, hunting and specimen collecting. He did manage to take botany courses and was very influenced by the geologist/scientist Adam Sedgwick. He also had begun his fascination with insects and shells. His father indulged him, knowing he was an extremely bright young man and knowing that the blood of his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, a renowned scientist, ran strongly in the boy's blood. His sisters, on the other hand, were more frustrated that they could not find a perfect match for their brother.When an opportunity came, at the age of 22, for him to take part in an exploring expedition with Captain FitzRoy of the HMS Beagle, Charley did not hesitate --- though it would involve hardship and years away from England. At first his father was not pleased, but eventually supported him with blessings and financial aid.Three years aboard the HMS Beagle as a naturalist and companion to FitzRoy turned into five. The voyage basically took them around South America with stops at islands (such as the famous Galapagos) and inland areas along the way. Charley was often terribly ill from the effects of being seasick, and though he enjoyed all the explorations, he sometimes was overwhelmed by the hardships they endured. He sent hundreds of specimens back to England, and his father sent him hundreds of dollars. He dissected and preserved every sort of animal and bird he could shoot. His records were detailed, and the voyage turned out to be one of the most well-documented ventures thanks to his painstaking recordings.Reading about the adventures and encounters of Charley and the crew during this time makes the reader realize what a huge undertaking all of this was. At one point, with the bodies of so many dead birds and animals piled around him, Charley actually decided he had had enough killing of living things and began to pull back in that area. He became a strong conservationist for his time. His fascination with fossils and geology helped balance this out as he concentrated on varieties of shells, rocks and bones --- all of which would be groundbreaking in his body of work.The more he learned, the more questions he asked. Why were certain birds made with long beaks and others had short? Why did lizards within the same species have webbed feet or shorter tails or changing colors? His notes and studies, sent back to England, would be the basis for many detailed volumes that would show the natural evolvement among the species.Though his life was privileged through the wealth of his family and influential friends, the curious, daydreaming Charley Darwin used the opportunities he had to open the eyes of the world to a new way of thinking. Particularly useful was Adams chapter on understanding and working with particular issues was particularly useful in showing what ET actually does when working with particular and common counselling concerns. Well worth the read for students and new ET practitioners.

This is not as in-depth as some other texts, but provides and easy to read overview. It is great for an introduction to the topic or if you just want the high points.

Essential reading for anyone wishing to become involved in this field, but also very interesting reading for anyone interested in human interaction and improving personal relationships. Engaging and thought provoking, Adams writes with great insight and sensitivity about the counsellor / client relationship. Existential counselling is really the only counselling approach that is firmly rooted in philosophical wisdom, and as an approach it imparts philosophical wisdom to both client and counsellor as it proceeds. The journey may be uncomfortable at times, as all journeys of self-discovery are, but the goal is personal empowerment through enlightenment and liberation from the life denying grip of bad faith. The general ideas and methods of existential counselling are much needed in these modern times where we are all too busy informing each other of everything to really communicate, to really understand each other and through that genuine dialogue understand and help ourselves.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK. I bought this book for my son for Easter and it really is a dud. It is supposed to be a touch and feel book, but really misses opportunities to add different textures (for example there is a duck, but there is nothing to feel for the duck). I don't think some of the touch and feel items really count (such as easter eggs with glitter on them).Skip this book all together.

I purchased this book after owning several other of the Bright Baby Touch and Feel books. I was greatly disappointed with this particular book. There was slim to none to actually touch and feel. Glitter eggs - yes I guess they have some texture, but not really the touch and feel I was accustomed to with this brand. Bummed.

I have purchased dozens and dozens of children books over the years. This one was the most misleading "touch and feel" - I have every purchased. Out of 10 pages there were 3 things to touch - 4 pages maybe if you count the small bumps on page one. This book is a huge disappointment and I won't be giving it to my grandchild.

I am not sure what I was expecting from this book; I think I just expected MORE. Only half of the pages are actually "touch and feel" and even those are not so great. There is a basket with a raised texture, a bunny with barely velvet ears and a church with a shiny sun. These are so subtle my daughter doesn't even really notice them. The two page spread with chocolate foil wrapped eggs has glitter eggs mixed in. Yay! Glitter. Something we all want our babies to have more of. The only good textured page is the furry spot on the picture of the lamb. The other pictures are of a chocolate bunny, a baby chick, a field of flowers and a little girl on an egg hunt.The reason I chose this book was for the "touch and feel" aspect of it. What a bummer.

I normally LOVE all the touch and feel books. This one, however, I was extremely disappointed with. There wasn't much things for them to "feel" and what there was didn't have much texture, was really smooth, or was a stupid thing to use as a "feel" option. I was very disappointed, and my son wasn't impressed either. He didn't even really seem interested in it (to this day), especially compared to his other touch and feel books. This one dropped the ball, hard.

Yes the colors are nice and it's very festive for Easter but this book is no where near a touch and feel book. Maybe two out of all the pages have texture to them. I feel a touch and feel book should have textures on every page to engage the child. Don't waste your money buy something else.

This book was a waste of money and disappointment for my little one on Easter. Not a true touch and feel book. Two pages have either tiny ears to feel or a tiny area of a lamb that is soft. That's it. It even opens up with a picture of a chick that you would thick would be soft. Don't buy

Really disappointed. I expected more touch and feel. Most of the pages are just smooth for looking at a picture. Definitely would not recommend as a touch and feel book.

Sean Brock is the founding chef of the award-winning Husk restaurants and the chef/owner of a forthcoming to-be-named restaurant in Nashville. His first book, Heritage, was the winner of the James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook and the IACP Julia Child First Book Award in 2015 and was called “the blue-ribbon chef cookbook of the year” by the New York Times. Brock won the James Beard Award for Best Chef Southeast in 2010 and was a finalist for Outstanding Chef in 2013, 2014, and 2015. His TV résumé includes Chef’s Table and The Mind of a Chef, for which he was nominated for an Emmy. Raised in rural Virginia, Brock is passionate about preserving and restoring heirloom ingredients. I met chef Brock last December at Husk in Charleston and we spoke a bit about the upcoming book. I actually got to see pics of this book unfinished as he had just returned from a meeting with the publisher. I have been anxiously awaiting since hearing about the project that summer. I have to say, what a great wait, and to finally have it in my collection is awesome. I am a chef from Pinehurst, NC and cook very similar to chef Brock and have been a fan of his work for a while now. I could not wait to see some of his recipes on paper and am not disappointed at all in the attention to detail and the quality of product used.This chef is one of the best when it comes to tradition and quality of southern cooking. It is his product research and the need to keep the recipes true to the region that blows me away. From the use of local benne seed, okra, red corn, and heritage breed pork; this chef has his finger on the "farm to fork" movement. The work with Anson Mills is just one example of how one chef can make a difference and bring back ingredients almost lost in the culinary shuffle.This book is just amazing anf is now one of my prized possessions up there with my Thomas Keller collection, John Currence, and others. The recipes are awesome alone but it is the photography in this read that really makes this book POP.No chef, cook, foodie, or home cook should pass up this amazing chef's gift to us all. I only hope to get mine signed one day as I am soon moving to Charleston to further my culinary travels. Make sure you add this to your collection, or start one with this selection. The pimiento cheese recipe alone (amazing had it at Husk) is worth the book price, trust me. Great book chef, keep up the great work and hope to see another book soon.

Heritage is, as others have pointed out, not as straightforward as the average home chef may want, or even need. As someone originally from South Carolina, I try not being blown away my the nostalgia Brock has presented to me here. I went to college in Charleston, where Brock's first restaurant, Husk, is located, and this book brings to mind the fondest of memories of my time there. In terms of evoking emotions, for a cookbook I would say I can't imagine how this book can be beat. I feel good when I read about digging into the roots of southern cooking, and in fact this is why I looked into Brock in the first place, as I am very interested in the history of cuisine in the south. For me, the book does exactly what it needs to: give me an experience while also teaching me techniques and even showing me ingredients I had never heard of before.However, as the haters have also pointed out, the majority of these recipes are simply not something Susie-homemaker is going to go out to the store, come back and make for dinner tonight. Nor are there any recipes, that I recall, which can be prepared swiftly enough (leftovers notwithstanding) to be last-minute options. Yet, while this is a valid point, and certainly a necessary component of knowledge of which you should be aware before buying, it's important to understand that this is not at all what this book is for. Brock knows good and well that the average person is not going to go online and buy Bourbon Barrel smoked seasonings just to make one of his recipes. But the book was not written for those average people. It was written to show off the vastness of southern cuisine, and what one can create if they so choose. I will also say however, that though some of the recipes seem like something only a Michelin star restaurant would serve, it's important to note that many of these recipes are accessible to the home cook who has an interest in making delicious food for their families despite the difficulty (and often expense) that comes with that. I happen to be one of those people who love cooking at home for my family and friends. I love learning about cuisine and, without being arrogant about it, understanding why a recipe tastes better than another, what makes certain ingredients superior, and ultimately, what food I can use to create an experience for my family and friends as I create something delicious. If you, like me, are after this kind of knowledge and experience, give this book a try.

Each recipe has a brief introduction providing a nice story about the history of the dish and/or why it is meaningful to Sean Brock from his heritage. Several of the recipes in this cookbook are adaptations of recipes of family member's of Sean Brock that shaped his relationship with Southern food and cooking.Some of the recipes call for very specific brand of ingredients (example: Anson Mills Antebellum Fine Yellow Cornmeal). In the back of the book is a page of resources for where to buy. Based upon this and the variety of ingredients for each dish, you will need to plan ahead to make the recipes.The instructions for the recipes are extremely clear covering order of steps and how to's in order to get the best results. the pictures provide great visuals for how to plate the dishes. Based upon the complexity of the recipes, the book is more tailored to experienced cooks than beginners.Many of the recipes in this book can be made with the standard equipment found in your home kitchen. Some recipes do require specialized equipment such as a juice extractor or a sous vide machine.I recommend this book for foodies who love unique recipes, food presentation, modernist cooking, or just to have as a beautiful read on your coffee table.

I just finished reading this book, which is a very well written history of school lunch programs in the U.S. One would think that the concept is fairly easily understood: feeding children ought to be a "good idea" almost by definition, but nothing is ever obvious or simple in American politics. Conservatives were afraid that children would become dependent upon government if they were to receive free food. Using this argument, of course, we shouldn't feed our dogs and cats lest they become dependent. Sheesh. The real reason is that conservatives didn't want "those people" (poor people and racial minorities) to become dependent and therefore grateful to the political party providing those meals (as they certainly were not going to be).There are many uplifting agents fighting the good fight that hungry children ought to be fed, which is a good thing because the battle is not over ... in this country. It was over long ago in France and Scandinavian countries, etc.This is a good read. The writing is clean and straightforward. If you have an interest, get this one.
