This version is annotated by Richard Beeman, a genuine, non-ideological constitutional scholar. It is NOT the right wing/Skousen/LDS version described in many of the critical comments. For some reason, Amazon has applied the same set of comments to multiple versions of the Constitution, which makes it virtually impossible to determine which ones are worth buying - and reading.This version is well worth buying and reading, and reading again. In addition to the text of the original documents, it offers excellent historical context including a discussion of how the various articles and amendments have been interpreted by courts (not ideologues) through the years. It's a very valuable resource.UPDATE: In a comment to this review, RedRocks explains that if you try to order the paperback version of this Penguin guide, you'll actually get the Skousen/LDS version instead. (My brother confirmed this.) Kindle orders get the correct Penguin version. Amazon needs to correct this - RedRocks has complained about it before but Amazon has done nothing.

This reprint of the US Constitution is very well edited and annotated. The full original text is reproduced as written. There are no editorial comments or discussions. Original text that has been amended is enclosed in brackets, with a footnote to reference the amendment. The preamble to the Bill of Rights and the full text of all 27 amendments are included. The full text of the Declaration of Independence is included. The dimensions (3.25" x 6.5") make this a true "pocket guide". I recommend buying multiple copies of this pamphlet to give to family and friends, as I have done. Every American should be intimately familiar with these documents.Apparently, Amazon lumps together the reviews written for various print versions of the US Constitution. All print versions are not equal and many of the Amazon reviews do not apply to the print version I reviewed. The print version I reviewed has a painting of George Washington, quill pen in hand, on the front cover. It is copyrighted by the National Center for Constitutional Studies. Accept no substitutes.

I was stunned when I realized it was missing. Very disappointing!

Having just quickly perused all 44 pages of this USA e-book, just want to point out that this version of The United States Constitution is not annotated. It does have an excellent live index, very useful.

Amazon has the unfortunate practice of lumping reviews for several different editions together. The kindle edition I got did not have the "disclaimer" that several people objected to (I'm a liberal, but that would have annoyed me too.) It just started out with the table of contents and the the familiar Preamble.

Every American should own (and Read) this book. It was written for Us! Very highly recommend.

Large font easy to read. No Skousen nut case seditionist commentary. Just as it was written by the founders.

Grade 7 Up–Bausum peels back the layers of the story of the women's suffrage movement, exposing grit, fiery determination, and radical tactics. After covering the importance of familiar names, she devotes the bulk of the book to the events of 1906 to 1920, when a new group of young women emerged who were willing to truly suffer for suffrage. The movement split into two camps–Carrie Chapman Catt's larger National American Woman Suffrage Association working conservatively to gain the vote state by state, and a smaller, more contentiously radical organization, the National Woman's Party led by Alice Paul, focusing on a federal amendment. Bausum highlights the tension between these factions in well-documented detail and casts it against the greater picture of controversy within and surrounding the national and state governments, as well as World War I. She portrays her suffragist heroines as iron-jawed women totally devoted to their cause. Cloth is a recurrent theme, as the author describes the suffragists' tricolored banners, sashes, pennants, and sewn signs. Vintage photographs, some never before published, depict key figures in the movement speaking, protesting, parading, picketing, and going to jail. Bausum's careful research is evident throughout, with sources thoroughly cited and a text studded with original source quotations. As a child, the author met Alice Paul, a famous suffragist, and was clearly inspired. This personal interest drives the detailed history, written in an objective but anecdotal fashion. The design is thoughtful and attractive: sepia-tone photographs are highlighted in purple and gold (purple, gold, and white were the signature colors of the movement), the dark purple text is clean, elegant and very readable, and the general layout is artfully done. Detailed notes, bibliography, thumbnail biographies, and a chronology make this an all-in-one text that provides a general background to a very specific time within the movement. The timely release of this title will make every woman more appreciative of the Nineteenth Amendment, as well as the tremendous sacrifices that made it happen. This book was a tremendously interesting read. We all remember the stories in high school history class about the Suffragettes marching with placards to secure the vote for women. What we didn't learn was how horribly they were treated and that it took 72 years to secure the vote. This book should be read by every high school girl so that she realizes what these women went through to make sure voting is a right for women as well as men.

We had already watched Iron Jawed Angels, and been to the Sewall Belmont museum, so there was very little new information, but for a middle school student being introduced to the topic of the suffrage movement, the book was great.

A great overview of the Women's Suffrage Movement, with focus on the later years. The book is aimed at children, but, as an adult I found it to be very informative. I liked the focus on the banners used in parades and protests. The author gives clarity to a complicated subject. Thanks!

I highly recommend this book to all women just to learn how women were treated in their fight to be enfranchised and allowed to vote under the 14th amendment. Very little is written about the suffrage movement when I was in school in the 1970's. Men treated women as second class citizens from beginning of time and over 60 years later we are still not treated equal today. Our government gives business's and companies tax breaks to ship jobs to China giving the majority of Chinese women jobs just to make the almighty business exces wealthier. Why don't they think about all the jobless women in the USA struggling to make a living.

Great book with primary sources to teach intermediate elementary students the history of women's suffrage. There are a few minor moments where subjective language is used to paint a picture of certain historical figures, but otherwise a fair and intriguing read for parents and students alike.

Bought this for my daughter-in-law at her request for Christmas. She is enjoying reading it between taking care of two babies. It encourages her.

The publications of the National Geographic Society encompass some of the finest non-fiction titles for kids on the planet. Year after year this company churns out remarkable historical, scientific, and cultural tomes that are not only readable, but also lively, informative, and well-researched. "With Courage and With Cloth", one of the very few children's books to delve into women's suffrage in any depth, is no exception. It offers amazing information that everyone should know, and so few do. Unfortunately, it suffers from its format. While the text is brilliant and the pictures sublime, the layout of the book will undoubtedly turn off some readers, while those seeking information about the photographs will be up a tree. A fine fine book that could've used some fine fine tuning.Author Ann Bausum has this to say about American history. Learning about history in school, "I knew all about Washington and Lee, Marshall and Eisenhower. History seemed to be a progression of stories about men and wars and conquest". How much did any of us learn about women getting the vote in school? As I recall, it consisted of one or two sentences in a textbook amounting to something like, "And then in 1920, women were given the right to vote under the 19th Amendment". Goodnight, everybody! The real story behind that teeny little sentence, however, is immense. It's a story that spans more than seventy-two years and was won with literal blood, sweat, and tears. Through this book we meet great heroes like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth. We hear about how the suffragists repeatedly split into two different factions and how these factions worked separately to bring about an amendment to the constitution. We see the heroism of the women (dealing with particularly disgusting forced feedings, beatings at the hands of sailors, and rat infested cells) and witness their less than shining moments as well (in regards to their treatment of African-American women). By the time the amendment comes to a vote and has to be ratified by thirty-six states, the book has become an edge-of-your-seat thriller. You may know the ending already, but it's a heckuva ride getting there.Bausum writes in a style befitting of the heroes she's commending. She never shies away from the movement's prejudices and problems, but at the same time it's clear that these women were particularly exceptional. The book even goes so far as to include a section on the Equal Rights Amendment (something I can honestly say I have never before witnessed in a kids' text). On top of that you have profiles of all the major players, a chronology of events, a resource guide, sources and acknowledgements, a bibliography, an index, and a list of books about the suffragists that I spent the better part of last night copying down so that I could read them later. Obviously, I would have liked there to have been some more sections on the African-American women and their take on suffrage. There's an excellent passage quoting Sojourner Truth's, "And Ain't I A Woman" speech and some mild references to racism in the south and within the movement, but these are kind of glossed over.The layout of the book is the only real problem with it. The photographs that dot almost every page are accompanied by pale light brown captions that will be almost impossible to read if your child has less than stellar eyesight. Also, some of these pictures are stunning or shocking to the point that you'd love to learn more about them. Unfortunately, nine times out of ten the images you see here are given brief three to four line captions and then never mentioned in the text. It makes for slightly frustrating reading. The colors of the book (purple, brown, and white) are lovely, but don't quite make up for the difficult-to-read-text.But that's neither here nor there. The fact of the matter is that the book fills a very great need. No library in the country is complete without it. If you've children who considers themselves to be experts on American history, brother they don't know nuthin' until they've read "With Courage and With Cloth". A remarkable creation and a necessary read. Perhaps even moreso for adults.

This book is written for children, but I found it invaluable. Written in easy to digest, but poignant bits of information, it provides snap shots of the main players and a sequence of event leading up to the final goal. The pictures and quotes artfully featured throughout the book highlight attitudes and the era in which the last push took place. The Bibliography provides a great guide for further reading. There is also a section giving information about some of the main women supporters, helping clarify who each one is ( when reading the story I found on occasion I got the people mixed up and this section helped straighten out everything beautifully). This is great book, but mainly for high end outside, composting with large areas of land or huge built wooden composting units, etc... for the farmer or major food or land grower. It is not really for the home apartment composter with worms trying to grow and re-use soil in a garbage can for sprouts, etc..They cover a garbage can briefly, but it was not enough to go on for someone trying to get castings and soil compost working in a can in an apartment or condow. However, the book is technical and very clear on how important it is to understand soil balance and the mechanics of this related to microbes in the soil, various bugs and how all elements of nature, water, soil, minerals, metals etc... affect our soil and like blood in our body must be balanced and kept correctly balanced or plants don't grow and get nutrition and the life cycle on the earth for all living things that eat plants etc..does not work well. The importance of composting and not using pesticides and hurting the nearby lakes and fish with them and other aspects of being a real composting farmer are discussed. I still think it is very important information for any gardener or lover of the earth to know and read. Good book.

Although the bulk of the material contained in this book could be found online, it's still a worthwhile purchase. Indeed, it is a must have. For instance, one of the early chapters discusses the history of composting beginning with the ancient Akkadians. The final chapter discusses managing large scale compost operations (by large scale, I mean tens and hundreds of tons of waste) on the farm or as part of a municipal waste management strategy.The core of the book, however, is very directly useful. A chapter is provided describing the chemistry of what goes on in composting, and what goes on as plants attempt to take nutrients from the soil. Another chapter describes the various types of life from microbes to insects and worms (including lovely line drawings) that inhabit a compost pile during the various phases of its lifecycle.By far the most useful chapter is chapter 6, which provides a list of potential ingredients for your pile and suggestions on how to obtain them. Numerous charts are provided that indicate on balance whether an item should be considered a "green" or a "brown", and (should you desire more specifics) the actual NPK content of various ingredients. This is fully a fifth of the book.The next most useful chapter is chapter 10, which gives suggestions for various sorts of compost bins you can buy or build. Another chapter describes tools like chippers and shredders that might be useful to you if you plan to make a fair amount of compost. Alternatives are suggested for the folks who don't need quite that much labour saving help.I can't think of anything that is not in this book that I wish it had. Nor for that matter, can I think of anything that needs to be cut from it. It strikes the perfect balance between comprehensiveness and brevity.

It's helpful so far. Be careful not to confuse this with the original.I did and bought it by mistake. Turns out to have been a happy accident.. The editors did a great job with the update. This copy was a 1992 version(newer than expected). Glad to have the real book. Rodale Press kept up standards. If you want to go to your favorite search engine and try to figure out which of the 30 different answers to same question are accurate, have fun. Rodale Press, in my opinion, remains an accurate source of information about gardening and composting. Glad to have the book. It will be a life long reference. This book truly covers it all, and does so in a way which describes methods of composting in such a way as to rival hydroponics for sheer efficiency.As the heir of a home with a badly neglected yard, this book has given me more information than I'll ever be able to use. I'd go broke if I had to have all my yard cuttings hauled away... in addition, this book informs me that I'd be throwing away a fortune if I did. If you live in the Southwest, particularly in Los Angeles where there was a great deal of developing since the 1950s, then you are probably no stranger to poor hardpan soil, and you would do well to buy and read a copy of this book.On the pro side, this book goes into detail about plant nutrients without resorting to addition of chemical fertilizers (we can leave that to the hydroponics crowd), instead relying on nutrient adjustment through addition of the proper compostable materials to any given batch. There are even guidelines in here for people like my neighbor, who has expressed interest in starting his own composting operation and adding a methane recovery unit.On the con side, about the very worst I can say about this book is that there is no mention of sow bugs and armadillo bugs and the role they play in reducing large pieces of rotten wood to a good, peatlike compost; but then again, as I write this, my budget cannot accommodate the expense of a brush chipper.On the whole, I thoroughly recommend this book.

I HIGHLY recommend The Rodale Book of Composting to any and everyone who has an interest in composting. This book can be read as an in-depth text book for those who want to seriously delve into the topic. At the same time, if you have a general interest in composting, you can skim through only the pertinent parts as well. Fantastic book.. This book is a very densely packed hacking tutorial in 100 pages of nonstop content as if you were shadowing a penetration test with the author from start to finish.. All of the content is easily setup in a lab of your own if you have a few linux and windows VM's, you can follow along with most of the examples pretty closely. I have been penetration testing for 15yrs and I wish there were books like this when I got started... I was trying to find some NO FLUFF books for some friends and this is it.. Its really hard to find books with more then 1 chapter of content these days... I hope all authors follow this authors example and produce real content without fluff..

This is a wonderful book and well written, I think I saw a few typo's but it doesn't distract from the actual learning process. Amazing Author I bought 3 of his books and just finished reading this in a few days time. I plan to re-read it again but following the references and maybe set up a lab and see if I can use some of his techniques. Seriously buy the book! Lots of content.

A GREAT children's book that entertains and enlightens children, as well as adults. Maria Godsey uses clever rhyming, imagery and storytelling, wrapped in colorful and lively illustrations, to convey a simple, yet important message; responsibility starts with an idea, and one simple action and from there can grow like an acorn into an Oak. Not only will young readers identify with this wonderful book, but Mom, Dad, Teachers and all adults who read it are sure to find themselves smiling, while also doing some important thinking. "Not for me, please! I choose to act green," is a wonderful addition to any child's bookshelf. Can't wait to read more from this new author!

Great book to teach kids about responsibility and the environment through an engaging and relatable story. I particularly liked the dual layer approach with additional, relevant, information at the bottom of each page that gives more specific details if needed, but if not you can just focus on the story itself.Also beautifully illustrated, if you're interested in this topic and discussing with your kids highly recommended.

I have grandchildren that live in Europe, and they are very conscientious about recycling, reusing, and all the trash that is thrown away and finds its way into lakes and various places. My grandchildren who live in the United States are not as aware of recycling and reusing. I was searching for a book that would help my grandchildren be more aware of making the earth a better place. This is the perfect book to help children understand how recycling, reducing, and reusing are very important. The illustrations are great and the rhyming text is very easy for children to listen to. The interesting facts at the bottom of some pages really do help explain more to the children and answer their questions. All of my grandchildren love this book, including the ones that live in Europe. I highly recommend this book and will get a copy for each of my grandchildren’s classrooms.

I bought this for a 7yo on the advice of a friend...the whole family loved it. The message was simple, and well-articulated for younger and older children alike. Thought provoking questions at the end, and factoids included throughout, sparked some good conversations with our son, who now thinks of doing his part as the actions of a superhero...couldn't ask for anything more!

Enjoyed reading with my kids very much. Started a much larger discussion on how to be good and respectful, not just green. My kids enjoyed identifying with all the green things we do already and daddy really enjoyed pointing out the things they don't (like lights and TV's left on everywhere) ;-). Since it's a book that contains many things kids can relate to everyday they identify as Luke easily and stay engaged through the full story. We have even revisited several pages to talk about certain things.

Our son (sixteen-months-old) loves this book and we really appreciate the focus on protecting the environment. This is a great book for parents and caregivers who care about the future of the planet. There aren't many books like this in the young reader category. Highly recommended as a gift or for your own children!

This is my new gift for young mothers, grandmothers, teachers and the world. The lessons of the book can benefit anyone of any age as they are presented in a fun rhyming way for youngsters and yet, there is also serious teachable information presented that benefits any age. Gr 3-6-KaBOOM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the concept that all children deserve a safe place to play. The group facilitates partnerships between communities and businesses to build, maintain, and upgrade play areas in urban locations throughout the United States. Many of them are built with neighborhood support and labor in one day. This book recounts the building of one of these playgrounds in Indianapolis. A local charter school had a disintegrating play area and KaBOOM worked with parents, faculty, administration, and, most importantly, with children to plan, pay for, and build an appropriate playground. In a singsong style, the text chronicles the machines and people who do the planning and preliminary foundation work. The size of the project is described by using measurements familiar to children-with their own size, weight, and reach as basis. The children were encouraged to use their imaginations in choosing the colors and types of equipment and here the manufacturing process is also illustrated. Many volunteers worked to complete the project, and the process was documented by an on-site photographer whose work is the basis for many of the illustrations. The finished playground is a fine culmination showing what a community working together can achieve. However, the vital process of fundraising and bringing about business involvement is greatly simplified and may not show a completely realistic picture of the undertaking. Great book. Clear and easy to read.

Excellent

Appears to be re-copied. The print is faded and difficult to read. Not at all like the other Suzuki books that I have purchased.

The Kindle edition is a waste of money. Completely unusable. I bought it because I was in a pinch and needed the music quickly, but the page is so small on my iPad that it only takes up about half of the screen. It's useless to try and prop up on my piano to accompany anyone because it is too small to read. Buy the paper book. Paper is still better.

Collecting Flashpoint #1-5So, this is supposed to be the huge Universe altering event that launches DC into the New 52 and technically it is, HOWEVER, it's not as epic or as ground breaking as you may think. I feel like there are some missing pieces in this story (that are most likely filled in with all the various tie-in books). Overall it felt like just a normal Flash story. If I didn't know any better, I would have assumed that this story had little or no impact on the DC Universe.What makes this story so important is the implication that the ending creates an entirely new reality for every DC character, it's just not executed in a grand or epic scale.Having said that, the story is good on its own. There are some pretty awesome moments; a good balance of action and emotion. Perhaps it would help if you knew a little bit about the Flash or read some previous Flash stories, but it's not essential in understanding the story itself. The big thing to take away here is that this book serves as kind of a bridge between the pre-New 52 era and the New 52 era. Geoff Johns is a swell writer. I'm loving his New 52 Justice League run so far.One of my biggest pet peeves about comics is the sometimes inconsistent quality of art throughout. Every now and then, you'll get a trade paperback with awesome art, only to have that art change dramatically with a stand-in artist. It bugs me, but whatever. However, this DOES NOT happen in Flashpoint! The artist is Andy Kubert and he does the pencils for the entire collected edition and, to me, that's a high five all the way!!! Too bad the art is kind of weak...But I don't care! I'll take mediocre and consistent artwork over amazing artwork that, without any warning, sucks all of a sudden...I don't know, maybe not. There is some pretty incredible artwork artwork out there...Let's just call this one a "draw".

Short and Sweet. Very cool apocalyptic world explored by Flash. Straightforward story yet epic in scope.I give it 4.5 stars for both story and artwork, and it would have been better if it was longer with more world-building and characters more fleshed out. (You will get that, though, if you read the other Flashpoint tie-in tradebacks starring this altered world's Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Flash.) If you are completely new to DC, then this might be a bit confusing at some points when you have no reference point to compare the "alternate-world shifted" characters to. For example, if you do not know the basis of the character Shazam, then the Flashpoint version of Captain Thunder is dramatically less interesting and his story thread is less enticing.Check out the animated film, which is pretty good and adapts Flashpoint faithfully and even a bit more from the tie-ins, too.

I loved the menagerie of characters that though familiar in name, are unique to this mistake of a world Barry Allen find himself. The prospect of selfishly bringing back your loved one and assuming their lifeline is all that matters is humanity’s common flaw. We are neither omniscient, nor omnipotent. Every attempt we’ve made, even in the fiction world, has resulted in chaos. Add to this the current philosophy of science that no longer considers a multiverse science fiction...

Such a phenomenal story! This was actually my first experience into The Flash comic world. I'm hugely addicted to the television series and as soon as they mentioned time travel, I began concocting theories about what might happen in the show while guesting on The Flash Podcast. Unknown to me, I was actually predicting much of what happened in Flashpoint! I see such potential for a similar/modified story happening on the tv show, and I nerded out hard core while reading the book...and I only knew half the characters. Needless to say, I cannot WAIT to go back to it once I've explored more of this universe.

I personally really enjoyed the book. I'm not a comic book reader, I'm actually just starting to read comics so this is my first one and I didn't know what to expect. The book looks really nice. The art looks beautiful. However, it was very short for my liking. There isn't too much detail to the story. I'm not going in depth because of spoilers but to me it was somewhat anti climactic. Like I said I'm not a comics reader so I don't know how much into detail these stories go or how long the stories are. I just expected it to be a bit longer. Other than that, it was great and entertaining to read. I would recommend and I'll give it 4 stars.

Kindergarten-Grade 3 A flawed attempt at conveying a complex historical subject to inexperienced readers. Information about Pompeii is conveyed in one long narrative arbitrarily divided into three chapters. There is a brief description of what a volcano is and how it works, followed by a fictionalized account of what the people in Pompeii were doing on the day of the eruption and what happened to the inhabitants when Vesuvius blew up. The final chapter gives some information about the rediscovery of Pompeii and its excavation by archaeologists. In an attempt to simplify the ideas in the book, Kunhardt has oversimplified the prose. Sentences are choppyalmost joltingand reminiscent of a basal reader. Pronunciation guides are given in the text in a jarring manner: ``These pictures are called mosaics. Say: mo-ZAY-iks.'' The cartoonlike illustrations are colorful and attractive, but they are not clearly drawn or labeled. This book doesn't work as a picture book or as nonfiction. I'm going to go against the main stream of opinion here. Seriously...what age group were they aiming at? This book is written to a 5 year old, but it goes into great detail about people burning to death.I've enjoyed the Step Into Reading series as it has been a DK light for some interesting topics, sort of like a mini-encyclopedia on the topic with good pics that is appropriate for a wide range of ages.But this is a story that has to be read, and it is a scary story for little people. However, the facts and details are presented in a "baby" form that will not appeal to an older child who is curious about the science.I afterschool tutor and stock my shelves with quick reference books, but sadly, this book will collect dust on my shelf or be tossed in the bin. This is NOT a good reference for chilidren for Pompeii.

Well written. My 5 year old is into volcanoes and he found this book engaging, with just the right amount of text and detailed illustrations. The only thing that's really scary for someone that young is how archaeologists poured plaster into these strange holes at Pompeii and discovered that the holes were negative space created by corpses that had rotted away slowly after sediments/lava had accumulated. There's only 1 page of that. Otherwise, a good read. Would recommend for a young avid reader who can puzzle through it by him/herself.

Wonderful for a volcano-loving new 1st grader. A good level for autumn in 1st grade for a medium speed reader.Besides teaching the kids history and a bit on volcanoes, the book is a good conversation starter on the Roman empire, volcanoes, living in a dangerous area (like San Francisco) and slavery. The school likes to make my kid read Clifford the red dog and similar happy but slightly nonsense stories. I like that this book gives the kids a chance to reflect on how their life is compared to the people of Pompeii. Why were people willing to take the risk of living on a volcano? YES - we read it a lot

My five year-old LOVES this book! I especially appreciate the simple, clear discussion of the science involved in volcanoes. I read it to my son's kindergarten class and it seemed like about 85% of the kids loved it and 15% were scared. Note: the book does detail the loss of human life, including showing depictions of dead bodies. It doesn't bother my son at all, but it might bother a sensitive kid.

My 2nd grader loves most anything non-fiction and these style books are perfect for him to read alone and challenge himself while exploring or we can read them together so we can have some dialogue along the way. These Step into Reading leveled books offer a lot of topics that are sure to have you find a topic to interest your child. This one fits great for the history buff child.

And so do adults, I bought this for my grandson's , I had actually visited Pompeii because as a young child I had heard all the stories. When we talked about volcano's and I explained what I had seen and know, the boys immediately wanted a story about it.Being a former children's librarian, I know little people like the real fact's not just stories. Even reluctant reader will listen to a book filled with facts about the subject they love. It was the right answer to many questions

Except for the fact that this book doesn't cover all the Pompeian’s who DID heed the warning signs that Vesuvius was about to blow (the majority of the estimated population of 10,000 to 15,000) I use it as a creative writing prompt for students up to 5th grade. It has plenty of sensory details and images of everyday life back then. After I read it, I ask students to write a first-person POV account of the day before the eruption. Especially inspiring because archeological discoveries dove-tail with Roman historian Pliny the Younger's written account, encouraging them to view journal writing as a form of history..

Believe it or not but this has been my 6 year old's book for all times . Of the pile of books she reads out loud to me every day ,she always includes this book and understands it better every time when we discuss what she want to from the book.
