About the Author

A fearless foodie, a fair-weather sailor and a tireless traveler, A Taste of Croatia author, Karen Evenden has been fascinated with food, its history and preparation since childhood. At the age of 17, her curiosity for food was rewarded with a Betty Crocker scholarship to study Home Economics at Cornell University. Since then she has pursued a variety of vocations and avocations in a number of hometowns across America and abroad. Underlying each phase of her experience-filled life, food and travel have remained primary passions. In 1990 her long-term interest in food became her career. She opened The Galley Slave, a cooking school and kitchen store in Seattle, WA. For more than six years, she developed and presented hundreds of cooking classes, followed the trends in American dining preferences and shared the pleasures of her customer's expanded culinary skill and adventures. But then serious competition developed when Sur la Table opened nearby. Change was inevitable. However, change often creates new opportunities and within 18 months, she was off sailing with her newly retired husband in the sunny Mediterranean. From the fall of 1997 to the beginning of summer 2000, they explored France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Then on the 1st day of summer in 2000, they arrived in Dubrovnik. When they checked into Croatia, they did not know if they would stay a day, a week or a month. Never did they consider that their visit would last for more than three years. It did not take long for Croatia to seduce them. The Croatian cruising lifestyle was magic...a seemingly endless choice of protected coves, charming medieval villages, fascinating farmer s markets, a rich and potent history and a generous and welcoming people. However, even good things come to an end. After seven years of cruising, the yearning for a land-based community encouraged Karen and Bill to search for a home in sun-drenched southern California. Once again, good fortune was theirs...they found a small ranch in California s beautiful and productive Ojai Valley. Today, the boat is sold and they are no longer retired. Karen and Bill are farmers and artisanal entrepreneurs...nurturing their land to produce Mediterranean inspired crops: walnuts, Ojai Pixie tangerines, lavender and olives. Bill works the land and Karen receives endless pleasure in their rural lifestyle; helping to grow the crops, refine the products, develop recipes and write about food.

While it is a well written travelogue, it leaves something to be desired as a Croatian cookbok. It provides an approximation of some Croatian recipes. It makes too many substitutions of ingrediants and leaves out some classic recipes such as cevapcici. It did not meet my expectations for a cookbook.

Some nice text on sailing along the Croatian coast, but, a lot of the recipes are the author's fanciful adaptations of the region's cookery. For example, in her recipe for 'bakalar', she substitutes canned tuna for the dried cod. It's just not the same dish.

Recipes remind me of my childhood. When my mother died, I thought I lost those recipes, but luckily I found this book. My daughters were delighted and want to try recipes themselves.

What a fabulous cookbook! I have spent most of July and August working my way through the lighter recipes and I've loved everything that I've made, even the sauerkraut salad! My fathers family is from Italy and some of the recipes seemed vaguely familiar but definitely had a different twist. The grilled squid turned out great/tasty/succulent and was one of my favorites. Now that autumn is almost here in New England and my vegetable garden is no longer producing (weep...) I am looking forward to the heartier dishes. Additionally, I enjoyed the travel log and cultural notes provided. It was nice to learn about groups such as DEŠA that are committed to serving the needs of women while simultaneously fostering an educational and social environment in which all can learn and develop through experiences rich in culture and community.

Wonderful easy to follow recipes.

I loved the pictures of Croatia but feel the author talked about herself and her boating companions far more than I cared to know about. The recipes were pretty generalized- I have seen them in other cookbooks- I'm Croation! This book just didn't do it for me.

Having just returned from Croatia we picked this book up. This book tells you how to make fod like that you will enjoy in Croatia. Tried 6 dishes so far and each was great!

Fairly informative book, but seems to prescribe to the big business medical perspective. As a mom striving to apply more natural and whole-wellness approaches in my childcare I didn't always value the advice given. Also felt there was excessive information on some topics, and not enough info/explanations on others.And what the gravy is the size all about? What loon thought it'd be cool to have a massively tall and narrow book compared to standard sizes? Super inconvenient shape. ...Overall though I'd say it's nice to have available for basic knowledge on baby health (which is why I didn't return the item), but not a 100% perfect go-to reference (more like a 65%).

Have you ever left the pediatrician's office and grumbled because you forgot to ask that one question that's been bugging you for days? This book has got you covered.It is packed with information that you wouldn't have thought to ask, but find incredibly useful. It is an easy read, too. But you definitely do not need to read it sequentially. If your kid is already 6 months old, you may want to skip the newborn section at the front of the book. However, I bet most people will go back and read what they skipped after they have finished the more relevant chapters.My only complaint is a minor one with the index: it is too detailed, and lists every place that a word shows up, even if it was not the focus of the page or even paragraph. This means you have to look in 6 places to find what you are looking for. This probably only affects the physical copies of the book. The search feature in the Kindle version may make this less annoying.

It was first recommended by our pediatrician, which gives it some authority. There are literally hundreds of articles and books on every newborn topic, and they'll offer you every option possible and contradict each other 100% of the time, some of which could've been written by people who have no right telling people about children. Whenever something's come up and I've read multiple perspectives, this book has always felt the most logical and doable, and made me feel best about how I'd been doing things. Specifically, I've read the chapter on sleep probably five times. I also like the length and detail with which it goes into things.

Baby 411 was given to me by a friend when my eldest was born. I loved it so much that I buy it for shower gifts. The book is user friendly for mothers who don't like to read, for mothers running on little to no sleep, and for fathers who want to learn more. Baby 411 uses an expository format meaning that it has headings for every question asked or covered throughout the book. Each chapter is laid out in a way that one could easily find the answer to their problem. Dr. Brown discusses each topic thoroughly and in plain language for everyone to understand. If you can't find what you are looking for by using the headings you can simply flip to the back and look your question up by searching for the topic in the index. Easy read and so informative. I couldn't have made it through the first child without it.

A few coworkers (doctors) recommended this book to me. I wish I'd bought it sooner - the first chunk of the book is prenatal / maternity FAQs, the majority of the book is how to take care of a baby, broken down by topic and in an easy-to-read format where it outlines the basics and then launches into an intelligent Q&A. I spent most of my early sleepless nights with baby reading this beast cover to cover while feeding her. There are sections on sleep, feeding, poop, discipline, milestones/development, illness, and pregnancy/prenatal care to name a few, and the material is evidence based, reality based, and truly legitimately great. It's written by a breastfeeding expert and a paediatrician with impressive credentials. It certainly educated me, and I'm a doctor. I recommended it to anyone and will be buying copies of this for every darned baby shower I go to. I use it as my primary go-to resource and trust it.

This book has provided many many sanity checks for my wife and I. She has parts of it memorized and it helps us identify normal behavior/occurrences with issues and different problems. It provides a first step to help us look at and analyze what we are seeing. It has definitely made first time parenting be a much calmer and smoother process.I would definitely recommend this as a gift (more of a must have) for first time parents. They may never register for anything like this but it should calm frazzled nerves and give great guidance right off the bat.

I'm a little out of touch with what to get people for their baby showers so I asked around the office and was greeted with an enthusiastic endorsement of this book. I purchased it and gave it to the mom-to-be. Her husband sent me a note the next day saying the book was great, he had already started reading it, and the thank you note that I received from the mom was effusive with praise for this book. It will be my go-to shower gift for the future.

Great book. As a new mom, and dad, we were paranoid about everything. This book helped up recognize the norms of infant behaviors, milestones, what to expect, and important information regarding your newborns health and wellness. It also provides modern and up to date advise for each subject. I found "what to expect" boring but this book kept my attention and did a wonderful job at explaining infant health and behavior
