Love & Luck, by Jenna Evans Welch

Review

A heartwarming contemporary companion novel to Welch’s Love & Gelato. Sixteen-year-old Addie Bennett takes a summer road trip through Ireland with her brother Ian and gains insight on how to heal the pieces of her shattered heart. Readers will cheer that Addie’s best friend, Lina from the previous book, makes an appearance, but this is Addie’s story. Their friendship is tested when a planned trip to visit Lina in Italy is sidetracked, thanks to her brother Ian and a dimpled-faced driver named Rowan. They take an unexpected road trip to the biggest music festival in the country. Through the winding roads and lush greenery of Dublin, Addie reminisces about her romance with Cubby, Ian’s football teammate, and although Ian disapproves of the relationship, he is the only one who knows what Addie is going through. While offering the advice of a travel guide, each chapter is like a reassuring hug in the icy climate. The teens travel through Ireland in a cramped car with a leaking roof, and the trio meets a selection of colorful characters that unknowingly help Addie get through a lost love and increase her respect for her brother—they learn about one another more than they could imagine. Fans of Love & Gelato will enjoy this as Welch takes on love, laughs, friendship, and the Electric Picnic Festival in a trip through the scenic green hills of Ireland. VERDICT Purchase for all teen romance shelves.–Annisha Jeffries, Cleveland Public Library (SLJ Online May 25, 2018)

What makes a book “supremely enjoyable” to read, as opposed to “spellbinding,” “rich,” or “charming?” For me, it has to be a mix of good writing, clever lines, fun characters, strong relationship building, and most importantly, heart. Jenna Evans Welch’s latest book Love and Luck is such a supremely enjoyable read because it has all of those things. To wit:Good WritingIt takes a very steady writer’s hand to dole out details of a relationship, world, or situation fast enough to keep the interest of readers with short attention spans but not so fast that a story becomes predictable one-third of the way in. At the core of Love and Luck is the relationship between the main character, Addie, and her brother Ian, right after she goes through a really rough break-up with her boyfriend, and during a family trip to the Emerald Isle. They’re there for her aunt’s destination wedding, but Ian keeps bringing up the break-up, which gets him into all kinds of trouble with Addie. Then, she’s more-or-less forced into a whirlwind road trip with him and his Irish buddy Rowan. Addie finds a guidebook entitled “Ireland for the Heartbroken: An Unconventional Guide to the Emerald Isle” at their hotel, and uses that as her survival mechanism, but finds that she doesn’t need to rely on it so much as she needs to learn how to trust Ian, own her mistakes, and rely on her friends and family. Welch peels back the layers of Addie and Ian’s relationship bit-by-bit, through revelations of details about her relationship with Cubby, then wraps it back up again using the chaotic stitchwork of their shared roadtrip experience and previous history. It’s endearing and heart-warming, that’s what it is.Clever LinesSome examples:(in a conversation with Ian and Addie’s older brother, Walt, and their mother):Walt leaned forward, shaking himself free of me also. “Mom, please stop swearing. You’re awful at it.”“You can’t be awful at swearing,” she said shakily.“You have single-handedly disproven that theory,” Walt argued. “There’s a science to it; some words go together. You can’t just throw them all out at once.”“I’m going to throw you all out at once,” Mom said.”r this:(as Addie’s getting into Rowan’s tiny car and beginning this forced road trip):I rushed over, eager to keep up the goodwill, but when I looked inside [the car], the glow that Ian’s smile had created instantly faded away. He had somehow managed to stack Rowan’s items into a teetering pile that almost touched the ceiling. The only actual space was behind Ian’s seat, and it was just the right size for three malnourished squirrels and a hedgehog. If they all sucked in.Fun CharactersAddie is a high-schooler in the swamp of murky self-identity, yet her narrative isn’t angsty or depressing. In fact, it’s anything but. Through her interactions with Rowan, who becomes a co-commiserator in the Land of Heartbreak, she is revealed (to herself and others) as a kind, impulsive, dedicated, angry, helpful Person. Through her interactions with her brother Ian, which could have shown her to be nothing but selfish and mean-spirited, she is shown to crave harmony. In the end, her biggest problem is her ability to own her past mistakes, which is a very relatable character flaw. Somewhat whimsically, she follows the advise of the writer of “Ireland for the Heartbroken,” making paper airplanes out of losses and standing in the waters of Inch Beach until her legs are numb. It’s a joy to follow her journey.Strong Relationship BuildingAll books, when it comes right down to it, are about relationships (all good books anyway), no matter the genre. To take a relationship–a sibling relationship no less–from a knock-down fist fight to a hug, realistically, is no small feat, but as I said before, it’s done in this book.Heart“What is heart?” you say. It’s that indefinable quality of (good writing + fun characters + strong relationship building) + emotion. The emotion has to be deep and woven throughout, not dramatically expressed in fits and spurts like a bas relief sculpture, just for show. It’s interesting to me that at the launch for this book, which I attended at Kings’ English in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jenna stated that this book came out of one of the toughest years of her life. It doesn’t feel like it; it’s too light-hearted for that. Or rather, maybe because of that, between the clever quips and mad dashes, the heart of this book reaches a very universal core: who we are as human beings and whether we’re sufficient by ourselves or need others.Who Would Like Love & Luck?If you liked Love and Gelato, it’s loosely-related predecessor which I reviewed at HeadOverBooks.com, you’ll like this book. If you’re going to the beach and want a light read, you’ll like this book, although there’s not much romance per se. If you want a book for your teenage girl to read, one that has no sex and very little language, you’ll like this book.Find more reviews of books like this on my website HeadOverBooks.com

**Originally posted on my blog, RemmingtonReads**Last summer I picked up a book called Love & Gelato expecting a cute, summery read, as fluffy as cotton candy. To my surprise, not only was that book all those things, but it was packed with so much meaning! I was amazed by how much I loved it and quickly determined that anything Jenna Evans Welch writes has to be on my shelves! And then, how lucky was I when I heard there was a companion novel coming out soon?! I, of course, bought it and finally got around to reading it this week! OH MY GOODNESS!! What a beautiful piece of art! I adored Love & Gelato, but I think I might like this new one even more! While Love & Gelato focuses on romance, at the root of Love & Luck is family, which I loved even more than I thought I would! What makes this book sparkle is how realistic the characters are. Addie is one of four kids, having three brothers, and I just loved reading about their relationships! They fought with one another, of course, but at the end of the day, they had each other's backs. I love a good story of siblings! :) Addie is a teenager trying to figure out the rollercoaster ride that is high school and all the hills and valleys that come along with it. As a high-schooler myself, I can attest to the fact that the problems she faces are very real today. The cause for her heartbreak is something that happens far too often at school, and it was nice to read about something that actually happens inside the walls of high school. As I mentioned earlier, romance is not the main focus of this book. And that was totally okay! I'm a sucker for a swoon-worthy romance, but it just wasn't needed in this book. There was a little sprinkle of romance towards the end, but it was just the right amount! The family aspect of this book far outshines the need for romance! For being a contemporary book, the plot moved at the perfect speed! Not too slow, not too fast! You start out not knowing the cause for Addie's broken heart, but as the story progresses you slowly fit the puzzle pieces together! It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what had happened! I also loved how they made stops all throughout Ireland to mend Addie's broken heart. I would recommend listening to some of it on audiobook because the "Guidebook Lady's" attitude was hilarious!By the end of this book, my soul just felt cleansed, if that makes any sense at all? It was refreshing to read and just the perfect spirit-lifter! If you're looking for a cute, summery read but also a book with depth beyond just romance, this is the book for you! I give it all the stars!!!

When I first started this book I wasn't a fan, put it down and came back a week later. I am so glad I did. The book was moving, magical, and healing. The story was absolutely heartbreaking in the beginning but the way the author moved through the story you took you along with the healing process.I would buy the guide book used by Addie because it was hilarious, believable, and the homework worked with the story. The fact that they follow the map and grow as individuals and friends just brings you in and makes you part of the story. I cried, I laughed, and in the end I felt resolved. The ending didn't leave you hanging or try to do a fix all. Instead it was very believable.

I liked this one by Jenna Evans Welch mainly because of the sibling bond. I preferred her other offering Love & Gelato mainly due to it taking place in Italy and having a lot of food references. This s a sweet and fun ride of discovery through Ireland. I love that her books take place in other countries, which has always gotten my attention. The characters are likeable and Ian is adorable. Give it a try after Love & Gelato I hope that Jenna keeps finding girls to take us on heartfelt journeys through other countries. Looking forward to her next offering. This book is fine for readers of all ages. Enjoy your adventure.

This book might be helpful for beginners, but it manages to skim the surface without delving into details, so if you've played derby, or really any sport at all ever, this is not a very helpful book. For example, it will say that power is good to have, so you should do exercises to improve power. Well of course! The question is, Which power exercises? How often? How much? It's also a shame that it spends so much time on basics at the beginning. I'm just thinking that if someone is buying a book called "roller derby athlete" then chances are they know what a jammer is. It might have been better if the whole first three chapters could have been nixed and instead go into more detail on things like specific drills, specific recipes, specific timelines for training, that kind of thing. Or else call the book something like "derby for beginning athletes" or "derby for dummies."I did really like the interviews, though. And the information that it had was at least correct as far as I know. Except for the rules, of course. Sorry about that.

A couple reviewers thought this book was for beginners, but I would say yes and no. If you're beginning roller derby, and you want to be an elite athlete in the sport and join an elite league, then this is a good starting point. If you're already say intermediate or elite, while this book is helpful, it does cover the basics and it doesn't go into too much detail on training exercises, but none-the-less, it's pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of territory. If you just want to recreationally roller derby, I think this book may be intimidating with all the talk about training six-days-a-week and all the high-intensity cross-training like P90X. You don't need all that, but yes, you do need some flexibility, strength-training, and core training at least to minimize injury. If you get into roller derby, I would first suggest reading Down and Derby. Once you decide it's for you, then I would read this book. This book is the ultimate training guide. While it does cover more tactics and positioning than Down and Derby, it’s not a tactical book as much as a training book, and frankly, whatever sport you’re in, you would benefit from this book.Apparently, roller derby must be one of the most holistic, well-rounded sporting events, because it incorporates everything including endurance, speed, strength, power, balance, agility, core strength, flexibility, physical toughness to give and take hits, and what they call proprioception what I used to know as kinesthesia, the awareness of one's limbs and bodily position. The author repeats again and again, that if you just skate, you’re not going to improve nearly as much as if you cross-train, and when you do nothing but skate in a counter-clockwise direction, you become unbalanced, and when you’re unbalanced, you’re more likely to get injured. This book is pretty comprehensive and reminds me of the stuff I studied when I trained in track bicycling trying to get every possible advantage I could. Unfortunately, back then, I was looking for shortcuts more than simply pushing myself. So I already knew about fast and slow-twitch muscles and anaerobic versus aerobic exercise. However, there were a lot of things I didn’t know that this book covers. It truly is pretty comprehensive and intelligent covering the chemical reactions that occur when you break down proteins and carbs. The book also interviews top derby athletes in the field. It’s interesting to note that many are former athletes in other fields. Perhaps it’s obvious to say that the top athletes in roller derby are already quite athletic to begin with. I don’t think a single person interviewed said they used to sit on a couch all day smoking pot and never did any high school sports and then found roller derby and became an elite athlete. At the elite level, they pretty much train as much and as hard as any top athlete. I'm not sure I'll have the time or honestly interest in training so much and so hard but who knows. I do know I'll be training hard and don't want just recreational roller derby. One criticism is that the narrator says pasta has a low-glycemic index, but I'm pretty sure it's in the middle and depends on the flour used, whole grain obviously being better than refined wheat flour. Another criticism I have is that the author tends to suggest too much carb-intake for a beginner or intermediate athlete. Certainly, when you get to the elite level and you have low body fat, you should take in a lot of carbs to sustain your energy output, but I’m sure a lot of beginners and intermediate athletes have sufficient fat they can burn off and don’t need as much carbs. The author doesn’t cover cutting weight, but as I learned in cycling, any extra fat you carry as an athlete is dead weight; it slows you down. If you really want to be an elite athlete, you need to cut weight, especially fat in the legs which slow you down more than fat in the torso or arms.If you’re just starting out with roller derby, you should read this book but don't get turned off by all the super-athletes bragging about how much they work out. Unless you want to be an elite skater, you don't have to work out that much or hard. You get out what you put in, so if you just want to have fun, there are recreational leagues that are not really competitive. Then you have the more competitive leagues where players may or may not want to advance to the elite leagues. This book is intimidating, but it really is geared more for those who want to go all the way but beneficial for all. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t benefit from cross-training and doing all the diverse array of exercises the author suggests, just less of it. Most importantly, cross-training, stretching, and weight training also help reduce injury, so even if you’re doing it recreationally, you can enjoy it more if you put in some effort to cross-train and be more well-rounded. Fact is, I hate getting injured. I broke my collar-bone twice in cycling. One thing perhaps the author missed is psychology. Psychological stress can hurt you more than physical exhaustion or stress. When your mind is somewhere else, you can twist and turn your body unnaturally or just get blind-sided, and when you're mentally stressed it really does create physical imbalance and lowers your ability to recover and build muscle.

This has helped me on a healthy and hopefully lower injury start with roller derby. While explaining the basics with visuals, experienced quotes from top world rollers, and honest knowledge I'm both positive and looking forward to enjoying my new favorite hobby.I would recommend this to anyone curious about what it rakes to be a peak performer in a pairOf quad skates. If your like me and prefer something with more meat then garnish this book is for you,It even has full workout and color skill photos, information on nutrition for vegans and meat eaters, I honestly can't say enough...I'm gonna be flipping through this virtual read for years!I'm looking forward to reading any other books from this author and her cohorts!

Like the other reviewer said, this is probably more aimed at beginners. I'm just starting my second bouting season but I still bought it for workout ideas. Although it doesn't really tell you when or how often to work out or lay out a specific plan, there are sections on plyo, stretching, ab exercises and other helpful stuff. I like how they show how to do different jumps/turns, that part is cool too. Also it breaks down all the muscles in the legs and gives you a quick and dirty nutrition talk.Basically if an alien landed on earth and asked what roller derby is, you'd give them this book. It goes into some detail and it's a good place to start with vocabulary and the interviews are good. I would definitely recommend this to fresh meat or someone working on putting together their own workouts at home.

This book is a really good investment! It explains everything from the basics of roller derby to strategy and pack drills. It even interviews women and men who play roller derby. This is great if you're just getting started or if you have been playing for a while.

Nice book great for fresh meat!!!
