The Church: The Evolution of Catholicism, by Richard P. McBrien

From Publishers Weekly

McBrien's outspoken media commentaries on Catholic polity and pronouncements have earned him a loyal following and not a few critics. A theology professor at the University of Notre Dame, he has written 25 books including Catholicism, a 1,344-page theological survey. His newest study looks at one branch of theology, ecclesiology, which he defines as theological reflection on the nature, mission, ministries, and structures of the Church. In good academic fashion, McBrien organizes his material thoroughly, with frequent introductions, summaries, lists and cross-references that make this an ideal textbook. At the same time, he writes clearly and passionately on topics of general concern such as papal authority, the church's social and political involvement, interfaith relations and the role of the laity. An ardent admirer of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), McBrien sets its documents and discussions at the heart of his presentation. Much of the rest of the book, including one breathless 30-page romp through 18 centuries, is either historical context for the Council or a discussion of its effects on the contemporary church. Review

As always McBrien’s work is clear, concise and comprehensive in scope. Undoubtedly this book will become a standard ecclesiological reference point for students and teachers alike. (Neil Ormerod Neil Ormerod, Professor of Theology, Director of the Institute of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Education, Australian Catholic University)With characteristic clarity, Richard McBrien artfully tells the story of how Catholic theology developed over two millennia. In tracing the insights, conflicts, and fundamentals of Catholic thought, he has provided a superb resource for readers of all traditions. (Mary C. Boys, s.n.j.m., author of Has God Only One Blessing? Judaism as a Source of Christian Self-Understanding)This is a superb book, as usual. What would we do without this great honest man and his great honest writing? (Sr. Joan Chittister)McBrien’s encyclopedic text examining Roman Catholicism is destined to be the definitive theological work on the topic. . . . [T]his superlative, splendidly written text is accessible to anyone interested in understanding the Catholic Church’s history and theology from a modern global perspective. Recommended for all libraries. (School Library Journal)Catholicism expert Richard McBrien offers the first modern history of the Roman Catholic Church. . . . Encyclopedic is scope, but accessible and written in layman’s terms. (Christian Bookseller)A work breathtaking in its scope and yet manageable in its presentation. (National Catholic Reporter)This distinguished scholar and professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, candidly sketches out the pastoral challenges to, and the internal tensions within, the church today. (America Magazine)Catholicism expert Richard McBrien offers the first modern history of the Roman Catholic Church. Encyclopedic in scope but accessible and written in laymen’s terms... (CBA Retailers and Resources, August 2008)The Church is a lucid, balanced, and readable book-a work of integration that is always reasonable, well informed, honest, and deeply hopeful. (Commonweal)

The material is covered clearly and concisely without being dumbed down. It is very clear from the start as to what it is and what it is not. It is not a play by play history of the church and the moments in history that have made it what it is today. What it is is an examination of the ideas that have driven the church through history. This book is more about the ideas than the people who had them. This book illustrates tat the Church is an work in progress and that's not a bad thing. Humanity is ever trying to elevate itself toward God and although it will never full reach the apex the merit is in the attempt, not the achievement. This book is a snapshot of man's attempt to glimpse the glory of God. When my RCIA teacher lent me this book I knew that the Catholic Church was the only place for me.

I am reading this book now and it is very well written.

I was saddened when Richard McBrien died. This book is certainly one of his best.

Great!

Good read

This book is everything we've come to expect from Richard McBrien, detailed scholarship, meticulous analysis, elegant writing, and a compelling story. Read any of the fine reviews to learn more about the range of topics addressed in this book. Five stars for the text.Regarding the Kindle edition which I purchased, I was very disappointed that the endnotes are not linked to the text. Authors like McBrien should be aware that Kindle versions are sadly inferior to the print edition if notes cannot be easily accessed. I suspect many read Father McBrien's works not just for the main text, but also for the informative notes. The Kindle is supposed to make reading more convenient, not more complicated. One star for the Kindle version.

Was a gift to my granddaughter, who is in College for her Master's degree in Theology.Book was a requirement to read. She stated that is a good book and helping in her studies.

For me as a non-Catholic, it is interesting, but "text bookie." He was a famous theologian, but apparently not the Church's favorite.
