Review

“In honor of the Illinois bicentennial, this creative history launches the Chronicles series. Beautifully designed, the pages resemble spreads from a fictional Illinois newspaper and feature ‘articles’ on events ranging from Illinois’ 1818 admittance to the Union to current plans for the state’s 2018 bicentennial celebration. Without trying to be a comprehensive history, the book highlights major events, such as Chicago’s World’s Fairs and the Cubs’ 2016 World Series win, and noteworthy local figures, including Jane Addams, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and Barack Obama…An elaborately detailed, impeccably organized time line follows the main text; printed on sturdy paper, this accordion-folded addition stretches eight pages, with the time line appearing on one side and an assortment of state facts, places to visit, and famous Illinoisans on the reverse. Significant curricular support is available for educators wishing to add this excellent resource to their classrooms.” – Booklist Starred review"Beautifully-illustrated and hugely engaging…an exciting story of people and events whose unique legacy can still be felt today in the 21st State of the Union. Uniquely informative and thoroughly 'kid friendly' in organization and presentation, The Illinois Chronicles is ideal for ages 6 to 14 and unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, and community library American History collections in general, and Illinois State History supplemental studies lists in particular.” - Midwest Book Review"The learning opportunities within the Chronicles and educator’s guide can carry on well beyond the celebration year and may be used as launching points for future learning for years to come." - Illinois State Board of Education"Having an easy to read but detailed and informative narrative in the style of reportage and a timeline is not only unique, but will also be highly relevant and engaging for years to come." - James Cornelius, Keeper of the Lincoln Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum"We are very excited to share with you the Illinois Chronicles in celebration of the Illinois Bicentennial. Illinois is the Land of Lincoln."Bruce Rauner, Illinois State Governor"I found the content to be easily implemented while providing various options that cater to the specific grade level or subject area ... I see many opportunities for cross-curricular lessons as well!" - Rob Ulm, Principal, Jefferson Elementary School "The Illinois Chronicles uses chronological historical resources in an innovative timeline, creating a remarkable opportunity to teach us about our shared heritage, as well as help us think about the future." - Tony Smith. Great book. The fold out timeline is very well done.

My visits to Illinois have centered around business visits to corporate headquarters and to attend conferences, all in Chicago or the surrounding area. Also, like many people, I have spent a few unplanned nights at O'Hare because of canceled flights. Illinois Chronicles provides an opportunity to learn more about Illinois. The book provides a written and pictorial history of the state. It begins in 1818, when Illinois became our 21st state and runs through 2018, the 200th anniversary of statehood. There are many celebrated people associated with Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, Wild Bill Hickock, Mother Cabrini, Al Capone, and of course, Barack Obama. I was pleased to see the inclusion of Enrico Fermi, who built the first nuclear reactor at the University of Chicago. The highlight of the book is a large glossy foldout timeline. What I found lacking was a description of the area that became Illinois before it became a state. There must have been something to say about that period. However, I think that the authors have done a good job of presenting the highlights of the state.

This book covers 200 years of Illinois history, beginning in 1818 when Illinois became the 21st state under President James Monroe. Famous people, events, natural disasters and inventions are highlighted. Some of the events covered include the murders of Elijah Parish, Joseph Smith, Emmett Till, the invention of the horse-drawn reaper, the resettling of Cherokee from southern Illinois to west of the Mississippi River. A lot of these events happened in Chicago.President Lincoln, the Chicago Fire, the St Valentine's Massacre, World's Fair, Presidents Reagan and Obama are mentioned. Route 66, the Chicago River, race riots, the first nuclear reactor and other events are mentioned and presented in newspaper style. The pages are packed with color and black/white photographs. A six-foot pullout mentions many more events in chronological order.I'd like to see all 50 states featured this way.

For a middle-school or perhaps younger student, this is an excellent idea. I was surprised (but pleased) with some of the entries. There was no significant attempt at covering up negative aspects of Illinois history - the Trail of Tears connection to Illinois was mentioned, as was the murder of Joseph Smith (though the severe hardship imposed on the rest of the Mormons when they were driven out of Illinois in the middle of winter wasn't also mentioned). Still, with limited space, and the equally small space for each item, I don't consider a few missing details to be a major negative since negatives weren't simply hidden by non-inclusion. Could there have been other significant events and circumstances also included? Of course. Someone can always find something "missing," or criticize the quality of an included item. Overall, this was well done, and reflects the pride many people in Illinois still have for their state. The one negative that should be pointed out, and which may not be immediately apparent to an adolescent or late grade school student using this, is the misleading (even false) claim in the product description: "The Illinois Chronicles also includes more than 40 newspaper articles, written as if they happened yesterday, which capture key moments in Illinois history in a newsy and entertaining way." There are NO "newspaper articles" in this book. Instead, as noted on the back of the book itself in a manner that isn't very prominent, these "articles" are nothing more than cleaver (and generally good) summaries of the various people, places, and things pertaining to Illinois - but they are written as if having been published at the same times as each of the items included in the book. For example, the "article" on the Trail of Tears has a by-line of "By our news correspondent," is dated March 31, 1839, and begins, "Stories are circulating that an unimaginable and surely avoidable tragedy has occurred in southern Illinois...." That was written in the 21st century by the author of the book - not some 1800s newspaper "correspondent." Almost every "article" is presented that way.Why is that a problem? Because many of the articles reflect insight or sensitivity that simply wan't demonstrated back at the times of some of the stories. The story of the "modern-day exodus from the town of Nauvoo" as it was termed, does not reflect a completeness that actually seriously distorts the history of that event. And the "article" on the Trail of Tears ends with something that I seriously doubt was formalized at the time: "Native Americans are said to refer to these forced marches as 'The Trail of Tears.' " That is certainly the case in the 21st century, but merely surviving and dealing with the severe and uncaring betrayal of the non-Native government and military officials was all that was on their minds at the time - not a poignant label for the process. It would be excellent if a well-informed adult assisted in the assimilation of the material as presented to the target audience. With the above in mind, I still recommend the book, even if it did leave out my great grandfather's extraordinary contributions to both coal mining and railroading around the turn of the century (1900). :-) Seriously though, it's a nice compilation of State history that is worth reviewing by anyone even somewhat interested in Illinois. Kids, especially, should not be in a position to believe it's quite what it presents itself as being, however, despite its value. There is far more to history than this - but that's not the purpose of this book. It's a nice promotional piece as part of the 200th "birthday" of Illinois.

My kids are studying the states this year with their schooling so I ordered this book for them. I like to look books over a little before I give it to them. As I was looking through the book, I found myself not being able to put it down put read through the whole book. The Illinois Chronicles goes through highlights in the history of the state including some famous Illinoisans. There is a very impressive fold-out timeline which is a huge 6-ft long ranging from 1818 - 2018. I love the added feature of the pull out time, we use timelines in our schooling. This book is not just for Illinoisans but anyone that loves history about the states.

There are three major features that I like about this book. I love the fact that the story of the state of Illinois is told with newspaper articles as if the events happened yesterday. I feel like this feature gives even reluctant readers a more entertaining way of learning the history of Illinois. I also love the six-foot fold-out timeline from 1810-the present day. It highlights many events ranging from sports and adventure to politics and civil rights. And finally, as a former educator, I have to mention there is Educator's Guide sold separately or available as a free downloadable PDF. The guide is packed full of activity ideas to enhance the teaching of state history, and it is also mapped to Illinois ELA and Social Science Standards. The Illinois Chronicles Educator's Guide: A selection of K-12 cross-curricular activities for teaching state history.
