Review

?"Exceedingly well-written, Eating to Learn, Learning to Eat is an excellent piece of scholarship that fills an important gap in the literature on school lunches." (Ian Mosby author of Food Will Win the War)"A valuable, engaging volume for anyone interested in the interconnected histories of scientific research and US policy. Eating to Learn, Learning to Eat is an important historical work that is relevant to many contemporary policy debates around health, education, poverty, and nutrition." (Deborah Levine Providence College)"Over the course of about 70 years, school lunches grew from local experiments to a federal entitlement. Eating to Learn, Learning to Eat charts this process masterfully, in fascinating detail. Ruis dissects broad historical movements and events, including first-person accounts that anchor matters of policy in tangible reality." (The Lancet)"Chronicling in rich detail the origins, composition and challenges these early school food programmes faced, Ruis offers a history that deepens our understanding of mid-century federal legislation and informs present day policy decisions." (Social History of Medicine)"Eating to Learn, Learning to Eat succeeds in bringing a larger historical perspective to the problems of today’s school lunches. By reaching back to the Progressive Era, Ruis reveals a history that rhymes with our own state of affairs." (Nursing Clio)"In Eating to Learn, Learning to Eat, A. R. Ruis, a historian of medicine and public health and an education researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, provides a thorough overview of the history of school lunch policy."   (Health Affairs)"This is a deeply researched, well-written book, which provides a compelling and nuanced historical perspective on current debates about school lunch. By doing so, it illuminates broader historical (and contemporary) social and political questions, such as the responsibilities of government, the separation of the public and the private realm, and the moral imperatives constituted by want." (The Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences)"This book fills a gap in the literature on school lunch by exploring three models for lunch programs that predate the 1946 establishment of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)." (The Bulletin of the History of Medicine)"A worthwhile and engaging read that is a meaningful addition to the literature." (The Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth)"Eating to Learn, Learning to Eat is a worthwhile and engaging read that is a meaningful addition to the literature." (Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth)

I just finished reading this book, which is a very well written history of school lunch programs in the U.S. One would think that the concept is fairly easily understood: feeding children ought to be a "good idea" almost by definition, but nothing is ever obvious or simple in American politics. Conservatives were afraid that children would become dependent upon government if they were to receive free food. Using this argument, of course, we shouldn't feed our dogs and cats lest they become dependent. Sheesh. The real reason is that conservatives didn't want "those people" (poor people and racial minorities) to become dependent and therefore grateful to the political party providing those meals (as they certainly were not going to be). There are many uplifting agents fighting the good fight that hungry children ought to be fed, which is a good thing because the battle is not over ... in this country. It was over long ago in France and Scandinavian countries, etc. This is a good read. The writing is clean and straightforward. If you have an interest, get this one.

Very interesting and informative reading! Good health and nutrition education for schools! Enjoy!

Amazon.com Review

"One day, I put myself in the car and simply drove. I had no idea where I was going or why. I had no idea ... I would wind up, at dusk, in a lost little valley, turning up the driveway of the Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast." The best books, as you read them, take you from wherever you are to a place where you want to be. If you're a reader of a certain type--a lover of books, cats, and absurdity of a quiet kind--then the Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast should be on your itinerary. It introduces two fraternal twins, Hector and Virgil, unmarried men who run a cozy establishment on a Canadian island. The book alternates between notes from Hector or Virgil, and "Brief Lives," culled from the B & B's guest book. This variety of perspectives gives Bill Richardson tremendous flexibility, and he weaves all the disparate characters together with an unobtrusive dexterity. The Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast is a pleasant, soothing, quietly absurd place to be.

Bill Richardson 's description of two brothers who operate a bed and breakfast that caters to travellers in search of a retreat specifically for the purpose of reading will delight you. The guests are encouraged to write stories about their experiences, and these become chapters in the book. Small town living is both celebrated and satirized. When you need a day to literally laugh out loud as you read, pick this book.

I think heaven might be a little like this: a beautiful, cozy bed and breakfast, in a rural, peaceful setting, where the owners are two delightful, quirky, book and animal lovers, whose labor of love is a retreat for people who also love natural beauty, good books of every kind, and their pets. Reading this book is like a mini retreat in itself. Every page brings something to smile about or to reflect upon in the gentlest way. In this bed and breakfast the food is good, solitude is encouraged, yet good company is never far away. I refuse to believe this place is fictional, but then again, I keep looking for Middle Earth around every corner. This is a great gift book, sure to bring many smiles of pleasure to the bibliophiles in your life.

I read this years ago and was looking for a copy to give a friend who will be visiting the area this fall....Happy to have found it andcondition was perfect.

I had previously read The Bachelor Brother's Bed and Breakfast because a friend gave it to me and praised it highly. I was enchanted with it and sent it to another friend. I think that the same comments apply to both of the books. They are funny and the characters wonderfully wacky. I had read the book in snatches of time (it is good for a pick up and read briefly selection). My friend, however, read it in a day or two. The style of humor becomes too predictable and cute in large doses, rather like a whole day of Dave Barry. The Pillow book, is not appreciable different, but still full of great brief sketches of very loveable folks.

This book was given to me at the beginning of a lengthy visit with family. I was very busy and had time for a few pages each night before retiring. The portraits of interesting characters and life at the B&B were perfect for sending one off to sleep in a good mood.I will keep this and no doubt read it again, because there is no plot to spoil. However, I have suggested to others that the book, if read all of a sitting or two, can wear on one because the style of humor becomes predictable. Never-the-less it will remain a favorite.

What a delight "The Brothers" are - this and the follow up, "Pillow Book" are delightful to read and to give to those who love books, love life, and love off-beat lifestyles. One can, from Bill Richardson's descriptions, picture well the brothers and their guests and neighbors.Alas, I've had friends in Vancouver check and it seems the B&B and the brothers are .. fictional but if one could ever find a B&B of this sort, with characters that make the town lively, do pass it on.

I stumbled upon a well-worn copy of this little gem while vacationing at the Pudding Pan Guesthouse on the south shore of Nova Scotia. I advise each of you to buy a copy, then rent the Pudding Pan for a week or so (902-354-4944). Snuggle under the down comforter on the comfy loft bed, open the window (for the sea breeze), and read this book. There is a danger in this endeavor, however...it may cause you to question your current hectic pace of living.

Not as good as the first-but still a giggle

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: Book I: The Mysterious Howling, by Maryrose Wood

Review

It’s the best beginning since The Bad Beginning (1999) [by Lemony Snicket] and will leave readers howling for the next episode. (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“How hearty and delicious...Smartly written with a middle-grade audience in mind, this is both fun and funny and sprinkled with dollops of wisdom (thank you, Agatha Swanburne). How will it all turn out? Appetites whetted.” (Booklist (starred review))With a Snicketesque affect, Wood’s narrative propels the drama…pervasive humor and unanswered questions should have readers begging for more. (Publishers Weekly (starred review))Jane Eyre meets Lemony Snicket in this smart, surprising satire. Humorous antics and a climactic cliff-hanger ending will keep children turning pages and clamoring for the next volume, while more sophisticated readers will take away much more. Frequent plate-sized illustrations add wit and period flair. (School Library Journal (starred review))Every newspaper and website in America is going to tell you that The Mysterious Howling will leave you HOWLING FOR MORE! So I’m not going to say that. But it’s really good. (Adam Rex, author of The True Meaning of Smekday)

For anyone looking for a series with a strong female lead this is it. Penelope is so brave and confident even at a young age she is a great roll model for all girls. She puts on a brave face and fearlessly ventures out into life as a governess only to be surprised to find her students are three siblings who were found being raised by wolfs!! Although the Ashton estate and family is surrounded by mystery, Penelope does her best to teach her pupils and look deeper into the mysteries surrounding her.For any kid looking for a mystery series that will also make you laugh this is what you’re looking for! I heard about the series from the Read-aloud Revival Podcast. I quickly blazed through the series and even as an adult I loved them. I’ve now decided to buy the series to read to my 6 year old and save for her to read herself as she gets older.

We do lots of read alouds for our homeschool and all my children, from the teens to the four year old enjoyed this series.I admit, I judged this book by it’s cover when I first heard about it (as Agatha Swanburne would say “A book is always judged by it’s cover until it is read”), thinking it would be some kind of horror novel. I couldn’t have been more wrong and so pleasantly surprised. The writing is witty and refreshing, interesting enough for even adults to be kept interested. We read all four so far, and can hardly wait for the next one to be released this year.

The first book in the series introduces us to Miss Penelope Lumley, a fifteen year old graduate of the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females. She is off to her first interview as a governess, excited about her new charges and curious about the advertisements indication for experience with animals. In her interview, Lady Constance quickly hires her and has her sign a contract. Much to her surprise, her charges are 3 feral children found in the woods and apparently raised by wolves. They have been named by Lord Frederick as Alexander,Beowulf, and Cassiopeia, ranging in age from about 4 or 5 to about 10 for Alexander. They have been kept in the barn, and Penelope quickly sets out to befriend them and move them to better quarters. With the help of her favorite series of books and some good food from Cook, she begins the process of educating the children. She must use her problem solving skills to solve issues such as squirrel chasing, and while she works to teach the children, she puzzles over how they ended up in the woods. When she is asked to have the children ready for a big party, Penelope does her best, even though she worries that the children may not be quite ready for such an endeavor. She uses the wisdom of Agatha Swanburne to help guide her and adds a few choice sayings of her own along the way. This is a delightful start to the series, and will definitely be enjoyed by fans of Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl.

A ridiculous little story replete with lessons on vocabulary, grammar, stalactites, and stalagmites, etc. It is written in quite an old fashioned way. You will find no bad language, no sex, and no graphic violence. I don't want to be over "optoomuchstic," but I strongly recommend buying the entire set at once to save time going back and purchasing each volume separately. Ahwoooo!

This was one of the book I was supposed to read for Cybils. I am just now getting to it. It was one of a little over 20 I was unable to read before the deadline. I read the reviews of those on my panel who were able to read it first and envied them. This was such a fun book to read. The idea of a 15 year old governess taking care of children who had been raised by wolves seems preposterous to adults. That is exactly what makes it so charming and what will draw the kids in.The governess is only 15 when she takes on the challenge of not only educating the children in the English language, but also in how to dress properly. I loved the names of the children: Cassiopeia, Beowulf, and Alexander. It gave a since of charm and age to the story. In the midst of trying to teach the children, Penelope finds someone is trying to stop her. The mysteries continue to the end leaving an even bigger mystery that leads us to the next book. I loved it. I believe any fan of the Lemony Snicket books will find this series just as charming.

Kudos! I started reading this series while on vacation in early January. I found it charming and entertaining as well as a bit mysterious. The characters were refreshing and funny. I loved the British-style chattiness of the author's style.I raced through it to get to the end; imagine my surprise when I learned that there was a third installment due out the end of March. I was pretty disappointed, but of course, now that I've read it too, I'm satisfied. And is there a fourth one in the works too?I still do not know the entire mystery surrounding the three Incorrigible Children and Miss Lumley, but it's an adorable set of books that I can recommend to everyone who loves the middle-grade reader category of books and especially the British style of this genre.

The reviewer at the top from Library Journals hit the nail on the head - this is "Jane Eyre meets Lemony Snicket". And here's the best part - each thread benefits from the influence of the other. Jane Eyre is so earnest and this book is so deadpan goofy that you appreciate each of them more after reading Incorrigible Children. Lemony Snicket has such a strong undercurrent of sourness, and this book has such a cheerfully can-do attitude, that again each benefits from the comparison. So, if you want a book that will delight a young reader, (really, children raised by wolves being brought back into polite society?), and that will also amuse the adult helping to read it, well I don't see how you could do much better than this.

Amazon.com Review

Think of it as A New Hope for the world of Dragonlance: Sure, maybe it's a little rough around the edges, maybe it's got one cliché too many, but this baby is pure magic. The first volume in the Dragonlance Chronicles series, this classic from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman started it all for Krynn, eventually spawning a bestselling 90-plus book series. (And, frankly, you'd do well to stick to the Weis-Hickman titles.) All the heroes that you've likely heard of already--the creepy, hourglass-eyed Raistlin, the noble half-elf Tanis, the comic relief Tasselhoff Burrfoot, the curmudgeonly dwarf Flint Fireforge--they're all here, starting the good fight against the Dark Queen Takhisis as the War of the Lance begins. Pick up Dragons of Winter Night when you're done. --Paul Hughes

When readers, especially younger ones, ask me what fantasy novels to read after going through “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” by Tolkien, I usually tell them to check out “The Dragonlance Chronicles” by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. That trilogy starts off with “Dragons of Autumn Twilight,” a book I adored as a child and returned to three decades later. There are problems to be sure. The writing is often clunky and, as the authors admit in their notes in the “Annotated Chronicles,” they fell into the traps associated with TSR producing a series of RP modules at the same time as the books, especially where “Autumn Twilight” was concerned. Characters often make strange decisions so the plot can flow and the humor goes from funny to forced in the blink of an eye. There are far too many heroes at the end of the book with almost 15 characters in the main party. Needless to say, some of the characters simply get lost (including one who was crucial at the start of the book and basically ignored by the end of it). Going through TOR’s reread of the books--which is worth looking at--I found myself nodding my head far too often as the reviewers pointed out the various problems. But these problems pale in comparison to a fine book. Weis and Hickman do an amazing job at introducing the characters at the start of “Autumn Twilight” and do a fine job of guiding them through various adventures. The battles scenes are often excellent. Many of the heroes stand out as do some of the villains. Readers who enjoy fantasy novels should enjoy this book and exploring the lovingly crafted world of Krynn.Sure, there are too many cliches. Yes, Weis and Hickman keep tripping over TSR’s modules. There are way too many characters fighting for attention toward the end of “Autumn Twilight.” These kind of problems would undermine most books. That doesn’t happen here thanks to a fun plot in constant motion and some strong and intriguing characters. Even after three decades, “Autumn Twilight” holds up very well. Highly recommended.

The first time I read this book was close to 30 years ago (ouch). Enough volumes have passed before my eyes and through my thoughts that there was much I’d forgotten. The best books are those you can read and then return back to, like an old friend, to visit again.Weiss & Hickman have always been excellent storytellers that are vivid in their descriptions of surroundings as much as character development. I can imagine the smell of burning vallenwood as Ember, the red dragon, attacks. Fizban and Tasselhoff add much-needed brevity to the adventure. Raistlan, the mage, still gives me the creeps. If you’ve ever played Dungeons and Dragons (or even its video grandchildren: Legend of Zelda, Skyrim, or Baldur’s Gate), reading these books is like starting out on a new game or campaign. As always with me, no spoilers! Basically this is a classic epic fantasy of companions on a quest to save the land they love. They will battle hobgoblins, ghosts, zombies, and dragons on the journey. You’ll laugh, you may cry, but you won’t want to put it down. That’s all the hints you’ll get from me. Open the cover for yourself and make the journey to the magical world of Krynn.

Fantastic series, especially for gamers. However, be advised that there are numerous formatting errors in the kindle edition. In many places, there is no double spaced paragraphs to indicate a scene change within the same chapter. The result is a jarring sudden scene change, sometimes appearing as if a character elsewhere is replying to a character in the previous scene.

This book truly sets the standard for Fantasy Novels. I remember first reading this book (along with the other 2) in highschool during my freshman and softmore year. They amount of joy I had reading through the pages is something I'll always remember. Each word paints a vivid picture in your mind. The characters, each and every one, are lovable and distinct. You will find yourself truly attached to their adventure, anxiously waiting to turn the page to discover what is going to happen. As the story unfolds, you'll start to notice that you read more and more every time you open the book. One used to be a chapter a day turned into 4 chapters back to back. It's simple, this book and its trilogy will change the way you see other books. this will be what you compare all other books of this nature to. As said before, I read these books in highschool, I recently purchased the entire trilogy plus 2 others of the same story line about 2 weeks ago. I was 15 then, I'm 26 now, and let me tell you... 11 years later, this book is even better! You will laugh, you will have anxiety, your jaw will dropped from shock, you may even cry. The authors imagined a world that will become familiar, as if it's a real place you can travel to. You may find yourself day dreaming of its contents. Whether you a RPG fantasy nerd or just a person with a great imagination, young or old, this is a book for everyone to enjoy. A book I highly recommend. May it's pages bring you as much joy as they did for me.

I read this book back in 1986, and i never forgot it. I was sitting one day and it randomly crossed my mind, I decided to test myself and write a list of all of the ,main characters from memory. I only lost Tika "Waylan's" and Kitiara "Uth Matar's" last name to 30 years of time. The Dragonlance Chronicles will be held to my heart as something I have loved since I read the first sentence. So I bought the DragonLance Chronicles in the Kindle format.

Book is good, as expected. The shipping was terrible. The book was shipped in only a bubble envelope and one corner was ripped open and scuffed the book corner. I would press for a return but I needed it for class. Not happy with shipping quality.

This is a fun book to read. No. Really. It is! It is rare for a physics book to talk about spherical chicken or nut roasts, for example. The principles and examples are clearly delineated. There are margin notes from the authors. Suggestions for what math you need for certain sections. Biographies of major players in thermal physics. And suggestions for further reading for some chapters.

I would rate this one of the better undergraduate physics books. Why? Because it most effectively teaches and stresses the important physics behind thermodynamics; this is something that most textbooks don't do. Once the physics are learnt and deeply understood, going up to higher level books is easy. Having said that, the book could be improved by the authors having given more (at least 2x as many) questions as they have in the current book.

Excellent book. Excellent condition.

I used this book in conjunction with Kittel for an upper division undergraduate course, and was extremely happy that I did. I constantly turned to this text when Kittel became too dense and confusing. This text really helped clarify many of the essential concepts of this course. In addition, I consistently used this as a reference. This book consolidates important information and equations very clearly and concisely; something that Kittel does very poorly. However, Kittel was still essential in getting at the root of the physics behind the concepts. Kittel is a much deeper book when asking "Why?". Blundell and Blundell is a wonderful text, but is not the best stand-alone text. I highly recommend it as a supplemental text.

Great page and print quality
