Amazon.com Review

Think of it as A New Hope for the world of Dragonlance: Sure, maybe it's a little rough around the edges, maybe it's got one cliché too many, but this baby is pure magic. The first volume in the Dragonlance Chronicles series, this classic from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman started it all for Krynn, eventually spawning a bestselling 90-plus book series. (And, frankly, you'd do well to stick to the Weis-Hickman titles.) All the heroes that you've likely heard of already--the creepy, hourglass-eyed Raistlin, the noble half-elf Tanis, the comic relief Tasselhoff Burrfoot, the curmudgeonly dwarf Flint Fireforge--they're all here, starting the good fight against the Dark Queen Takhisis as the War of the Lance begins. Pick up Dragons of Winter Night when you're done. --Paul Hughes

When readers, especially younger ones, ask me what fantasy novels to read after going through “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” by Tolkien, I usually tell them to check out “The Dragonlance Chronicles” by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. That trilogy starts off with “Dragons of Autumn Twilight,” a book I adored as a child and returned to three decades later. There are problems to be sure. The writing is often clunky and, as the authors admit in their notes in the “Annotated Chronicles,” they fell into the traps associated with TSR producing a series of RP modules at the same time as the books, especially where “Autumn Twilight” was concerned. Characters often make strange decisions so the plot can flow and the humor goes from funny to forced in the blink of an eye. There are far too many heroes at the end of the book with almost 15 characters in the main party. Needless to say, some of the characters simply get lost (including one who was crucial at the start of the book and basically ignored by the end of it). Going through TOR’s reread of the books--which is worth looking at--I found myself nodding my head far too often as the reviewers pointed out the various problems. But these problems pale in comparison to a fine book. Weis and Hickman do an amazing job at introducing the characters at the start of “Autumn Twilight” and do a fine job of guiding them through various adventures. The battles scenes are often excellent. Many of the heroes stand out as do some of the villains. Readers who enjoy fantasy novels should enjoy this book and exploring the lovingly crafted world of Krynn.Sure, there are too many cliches. Yes, Weis and Hickman keep tripping over TSR’s modules. There are way too many characters fighting for attention toward the end of “Autumn Twilight.” These kind of problems would undermine most books. That doesn’t happen here thanks to a fun plot in constant motion and some strong and intriguing characters. Even after three decades, “Autumn Twilight” holds up very well. Highly recommended.

The first time I read this book was close to 30 years ago (ouch). Enough volumes have passed before my eyes and through my thoughts that there was much I’d forgotten. The best books are those you can read and then return back to, like an old friend, to visit again.Weiss & Hickman have always been excellent storytellers that are vivid in their descriptions of surroundings as much as character development. I can imagine the smell of burning vallenwood as Ember, the red dragon, attacks. Fizban and Tasselhoff add much-needed brevity to the adventure. Raistlan, the mage, still gives me the creeps. If you’ve ever played Dungeons and Dragons (or even its video grandchildren: Legend of Zelda, Skyrim, or Baldur’s Gate), reading these books is like starting out on a new game or campaign. As always with me, no spoilers! Basically this is a classic epic fantasy of companions on a quest to save the land they love. They will battle hobgoblins, ghosts, zombies, and dragons on the journey. You’ll laugh, you may cry, but you won’t want to put it down. That’s all the hints you’ll get from me. Open the cover for yourself and make the journey to the magical world of Krynn.

Fantastic series, especially for gamers. However, be advised that there are numerous formatting errors in the kindle edition. In many places, there is no double spaced paragraphs to indicate a scene change within the same chapter. The result is a jarring sudden scene change, sometimes appearing as if a character elsewhere is replying to a character in the previous scene.

This book truly sets the standard for Fantasy Novels. I remember first reading this book (along with the other 2) in highschool during my freshman and softmore year. They amount of joy I had reading through the pages is something I'll always remember. Each word paints a vivid picture in your mind. The characters, each and every one, are lovable and distinct. You will find yourself truly attached to their adventure, anxiously waiting to turn the page to discover what is going to happen. As the story unfolds, you'll start to notice that you read more and more every time you open the book. One used to be a chapter a day turned into 4 chapters back to back. It's simple, this book and its trilogy will change the way you see other books. this will be what you compare all other books of this nature to. As said before, I read these books in highschool, I recently purchased the entire trilogy plus 2 others of the same story line about 2 weeks ago. I was 15 then, I'm 26 now, and let me tell you... 11 years later, this book is even better! You will laugh, you will have anxiety, your jaw will dropped from shock, you may even cry. The authors imagined a world that will become familiar, as if it's a real place you can travel to. You may find yourself day dreaming of its contents. Whether you a RPG fantasy nerd or just a person with a great imagination, young or old, this is a book for everyone to enjoy. A book I highly recommend. May it's pages bring you as much joy as they did for me.

I read this book back in 1986, and i never forgot it. I was sitting one day and it randomly crossed my mind, I decided to test myself and write a list of all of the ,main characters from memory. I only lost Tika "Waylan's" and Kitiara "Uth Matar's" last name to 30 years of time. The Dragonlance Chronicles will be held to my heart as something I have loved since I read the first sentence. So I bought the DragonLance Chronicles in the Kindle format.

Book is good, as expected. The shipping was terrible. The book was shipped in only a bubble envelope and one corner was ripped open and scuffed the book corner. I would press for a return but I needed it for class. Not happy with shipping quality.

This is a fun book to read. No. Really. It is! It is rare for a physics book to talk about spherical chicken or nut roasts, for example. The principles and examples are clearly delineated. There are margin notes from the authors. Suggestions for what math you need for certain sections. Biographies of major players in thermal physics. And suggestions for further reading for some chapters.

I would rate this one of the better undergraduate physics books. Why? Because it most effectively teaches and stresses the important physics behind thermodynamics; this is something that most textbooks don't do. Once the physics are learnt and deeply understood, going up to higher level books is easy. Having said that, the book could be improved by the authors having given more (at least 2x as many) questions as they have in the current book.

Excellent book. Excellent condition.

I used this book in conjunction with Kittel for an upper division undergraduate course, and was extremely happy that I did. I constantly turned to this text when Kittel became too dense and confusing. This text really helped clarify many of the essential concepts of this course. In addition, I consistently used this as a reference. This book consolidates important information and equations very clearly and concisely; something that Kittel does very poorly. However, Kittel was still essential in getting at the root of the physics behind the concepts. Kittel is a much deeper book when asking "Why?". Blundell and Blundell is a wonderful text, but is not the best stand-alone text. I highly recommend it as a supplemental text.

Great page and print quality

The Asian Grocery Store Demystified (Take It with You Guides), by Linda Bladholm

Review

Though many Americans are eager to cook Asian dishes at home, the thought of navigating an Asian grocery store is a different story. For a non-Asian it can be bewildering territory full of pungent aromas, packages with labels in Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean or Vietnamese and odd-looking specimens you don't know whether to eat or to plant. At last there is a book that takes you by the hand and gives a clear and fascinating tour of these markets. It couldn't have a better title, The Asian Grocery Store Demystified. The author, Linda Bladholm, begins by describing the layout of an Asian grocery store in her neighborhood in Miami. As she explains, there is indeed an order to these markets. "Asian markets are generally stocked according to the principles of balance, " she writes. "Hot, spicy, chili sauces and curry pastes are all in one place; salty items are together in one row, and bitter, sour or sweet things are in other sections." That explanation changed my entire perspective, making these markets seem more manageable and interesting. Ms. Bladholm not only sorts out the cultural context of an Asian grocery store, but also does it in such a way that makes you hungry to return. -- Book Description

Whether the Asian Cuisine is CHINESE, JAPANESE, KOREAN, FILIPINO, THAI, or VIETNAMESE; this book will become your handy little guide as you venture into the exotic markets seeking out the ingredients to make the dishes of these countries, as Well as your taste buds come alive! Bravo to Linda Bladholm for writing and releasing this, as well as her other two companion books on Asian-Indian, and Latin and Carribbean Grocery Stores Demystified. These three books, I would recommend for the beginning cook to own so that it would help he/she not become so intimidated with the ingredients of any foreign cuisine that they choose to cook for themselves, and for their families and friends! In the words of the late, great Food icon Julia Child; "Bon' Appetite'!"

`The Asian Grocery Store Demystified' by book designer and illustrator, Linda Bladholm is an exposition of Oriental ingredients with a very nice little twist which saves it from being a poor man's `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients'. While Cost's classic book deals with the serious culinary details of a great many basic ingredients, Ms. Bladholm's book, as suggested by her title, is much more pointedly directed at the shopper's experience in your typical strip mall Oriental market. The author adds appeal and charm to her book by opening it with a visit to her own local mom and pop run Oriental grocery store. The store in question was just a bit better organized and stocked than my own favorite Filipino run store in southern New Jersey, but all the familiar staples were there, if not in all the familiar places. The device of providing a guided tour of an Asian market is reinforced by mentioning all the major brand names for staples such as rice, noodles, sauces, oils, and spice mixes, with opinions by the author of which may be the preferred brands. While I found a few misstatements, such as describing a gluten free flour as `general purpose' (general purpose flours by definition have 10% to 12% gluten producing proteins), and I missed some possible warnings against Texmati rice as a less than useful substitute for Basmati rice, I believe the advice and information in this book is a really great supplement to other books on Asian ingredients with a more scholarly bent.By far the biggest weakness of the book is the difference in quality between the promise of `over 400 illustrations of ingredients' and the quality of those illustrations. The illustrations in the book are all small black and white line drawings easily fitting into an inch square area with lots of the pictures giving no sense of the kind of thing they are depicting. The little picture of ginger certainly looks like the ginger with which I am familiar, but the picture of the related galangal rhizome does little to assure me that I would be able to use that picture to pick it out from bins of produce labeled in Chinese characters. These poor illustrations give the lie to the claim that this is a `Take It With You' guide, in that it is dealing with a guide to items which may all be labeled in not only a foreign language, but in a script we are simply not used to interpreting. The very clever chapter headings of Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Tagalong and Korean ideograms for food categories (with English translations) do nothing to help the situation.Note that unlike many other books on Asian ingredients, this book has few recipes using these ingredients. This is not necessarily a weakness, as it means that almost all the space in the book is dedicated to the book's principle topic, the groceries. And, much of this space is dedicated to subjects which purely culinary books may not touch such as teas and medicinal herbs and spices. This is probably not the best book on these subjects, but treating these topics enhances the treatment of the book's primary metaphor, the Asian grocery store,, as they do, in fact, appear in Asian grocery stores. My most satisfying discovery was the appearance of classic frozen `fast foods' such as potstickers and Chinese dumplings. After our 25 pound sacks of rice, the primary reason for going to our favorite Asian market was to pick up a supply of frozen pork dumplings. The book also does a nice job of featuring those things that are uniquely Chinese or Japanese. The short appendix on oriental cooking methods and utensils is not too helpful. These will be of little value if your Asian store has a good selection of cooking utensils. It does not, for example, give any clues about the various styles of woks or the various materials or what makes a good wok. This is especially important, as the criteria for a good wok are almost exactly the opposite of those for a good modern saute pan. This book is great if you find yourself living within easy shopping distance of a good Oriental market, assuming that market covers all of east Asia and not, for example, just India and Pakistan. The book also useful if you plan to order lots of Asian groceries over the Internet, as the recommended brands gives one some assurance they are not buying sawdust. The book is less valuable for the culinary generalist, who has no special interest in Asian cuisine, especially in that the book includes no bibliography. For those readers, Bruce Cost's book mentioned above is far superior a source.

This small paperback not only demystifies the Asian grocery, but also the Asian recipe and menu. I was able to quickly look up items that I couldn't spell but had long been curious about because the book is organized by the sections in the grocery. After quenching my initial curiosities, I had to sit down and read the interesting book cover to cover. Each ingredient is discussed as to appearance, taste, texture, uses, history and quality with references to preferred brands or possible substitutes. There are a few basic recipes included to try right away, but this book best serves as a supplement to other Asian and vegetarian cookbooks and in preparation for shopping or dining. My only disappointment was not finding the recipe for Sweet Thai Tea listed in the index but omitted from the content.

This book is an interesting read in terms of "demystifying" some Asian ingredients when shopping in the local Asian market. Unfortunately, not all are as well organized as Ms. Bladholm's local store! I enjoyed reading it, but would not consider it a guide when actually going to the store. My main problem with the book is the line drawings, which are not very helpful. My own favorite book of this type, and most useful for getting a visual image, is Martin Yan's booklet "A Simple Guide to Chinese Ingredients and Other Asian Specialties" which has nice clear color photos of all types of Asian foods, from vegetables to canned/packaged foods. No book is going to be perfect, as in my experience it all depends on the owner/type of market as far as what is carried. For example, the market I usually go to is run by a Korean family, so there is not much in the way of Japanese foods. Sometimes I've found the best way to shop is online, or surfing online stores to get a sense of what you need.In short, the book is good in content, but there are other sources out there for more visual people (like me).

No matter where you live in North America, at some time you will encounter some kind of Asian cuisine. Sometimes it's in a can, or of dubious authenticity; sometimes it appeals to you even if you're not of Asian heritage, sometimes not. You shouldn't limit yourself to the offerings at restaurants, though. Get yourself to an ethnic grocery and start discovering what the rest of the world eats. This guide helps explain what those bumpy squash-looking things are in the produce section, what the various kinds of soy sauce are, and why the type of rice you buy and cook makes a difference. The book concludes with some recipes, including quite a few for Chinese-style herbal soups.

After reading Rachel Cruze’s new book, Love Your Life, Not Theirs, I am completely ready to fall in love with my life all over again! This book was just the motivation I needed to hear as we continue to push through our own journey to debt-free living. It reminded me to focus on building up my own life and values, and not to gaze on what someone else appears to have. Many of the main money principles in the book are the same as those founded by her father, but Rachel aims them at values and situations present in today’s culture. She addresses some of the major issues that social media has on our mindset and challenges us to do things differently. I felt myself making changes in my usual social media routine and in other areas of my life immediately after reading this book. I am so thankful to Rachel and her ministry for what my future brings by making these small changes now!The book truly reads like a conversation you would have with a close friend. I almost felt like I was talking directly with Rachel as she poured out her humor to keep the mood light and I loved her anecdotes from her own life sprinkled throughout the book. She writes like a friend who is not afraid to show you some tough love and tell you the truth when you need to hear it. Rachel is also vulnerable with her own struggles and weaknesses when it comes to money. There were definitely moments I felt some convictions with my struggles, but I felt encouraged to do better and keep trying to build the life I want to live now and in the future. The principles are easy to incorporate in your life and Rachel explains them all so well! I can’t wait to share the principles I have learned with my friends and family to help them live the lives they love as well!Note: I received this book as part of a pre-launch book club.

The fear of missing out (or FOMO) is what keeps people my age flicking furiously through our social media news feeds. We see friends posing in front of sparkling new SUVs, wearing Mouse ears in front of the castle with their kids, and dipping their toes in the sand on the beach. Then we go out and spend ourselves into oblivion just trying to feel adequate to our frenemies. What if there was more to life? What about instead of focusing on what we can get/buy/take, we focused on what we can build and give? That’s the premise of 'Love Your Life, Not Theirs.' As Rachel puts it in Chapter 14, “The endgame…is not to buy so much stuff for ourselves that it fills up our garages and rented storage units. The real goal of building wealth is to leave a measurable and meaningful mark on the people around you.”Rachel’s conversational tone makes it a pleasant read. I laughed at her $20 bowl of guacamole, and identified with her plea to parents not to use money to show our children love. She talks about real relationship issues (e.g. competitive spending: it’s a real thing!), parenting, investing, and easing into giving. The book lacks the judgmental tone of many financial books written by older authors, or those that only focus on numbers. This quick read would make a great gift for the Millennial in your life to introduce them to sound financial habits, especially if they are a recent graduate (HS or college), newlywed, or new parent. (I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.)

This is a very easy to read book, but I was a bit disappointed in the makeup. I have not read any other Rachel Cruz or Dave Ramsey books but I am familiar with the baby steps they preach. This book was a regurgitation of those steps with a little story telling in between. I enjoyed the personal stories about Rachel and her husband, but I really didn't learn much more financially than I already knew going in.

I am a big Dave Ramsey ,so if you listen to his show and purchased any of his books there is nothing new in this book.If you have never read any of Dave Ramsey"s books then I recommend this book.

Disappointing...was pretty much just a reiteration of all she learned from her father. I would suggest reading "Total Money Makeover" instead, as it is more thorough and contains many examples.

This book has a lot of practical applications. The book was an easy read. I had a lot of meditative moments. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to live a better life and not compare yours to someone else's. It was like she was reading my life story to me. I had a lot of aha moments. Once I started reading I couldn't find it it down or when I had to I couldn't wait to begin again. It was very inspirational! I will put this book on my repeat read again to keep me focused on the big picture and not to give up this journey! I put social media down so that I wouldn't feel the need to do things due to what others were doing or fueling bad behaviors because of this book as that is what I found myself doing. I'm glad I listened to her dad's show and he mentioned this book!

Let me preface this by saying I'm a huge Dave Ramsey fan. Rachel's book has been heavily advertised on Dave's show and I've been looking forward to reading it for months. I thought Rachel's book would address how to remain content with your life when everyone else's life is constantly paraded on social media. How does one remain jealousy free? How do I stay content to live in a smaller home, take frugal vacations while watching others take extravagant ones, and buy secondhand clothes while watching friends buy designer? However, her book didn't address contentment at all. She regurgitated the baby steps from Dave's teachings and told the same stories we've heard for years. Although she tried to be relatable, since she has never been in debt or owned a credit card, her references fell flat. If you're new to Dave Ramsey, skip this book and read The Total Money Makeover.

I have been listening to the Audible version. Really did not care for Rachel's voice in the beginning but have gotten used to it because I love the principles she has. Piggybacking off her dad Dave Ramsey, I like her idea of the clip instead of money envelopes. This works better for us ladies whose bags are already full of too much stuff! This is a great book to help you stop living others lives and going into debt with them and focusing on your own goals.

Anatomy of Injustice: A Murder Case Gone Wrong, by Raymond Bonner

Review

“Masterful. . . . Eloquent, important, and accessible. . . . The book of the century about the death penalty.”  —Andrew Cohen, The Atlantic “Mesmerizing. . . . Powerful. . . . An utterly engrossing true-crime tale.” —Kevin Boyle, The New York Times Book Review “A genuine whodunit, a page-turner, and a tale of redemption. And it’s all true. For all that, however, Anatomy of Injustice is also a blistering indictment of the death penalty. . . . Bonner delivers a crackerjack feat of storytelling that steadily administers the truth about capital punishment like a slow, toxic IV drip. . . . In his expert hands, the twists and turns of Elmore’s appeals, and the gradual discovery of the travesties in the original investigation and trial by Holt’s team, make for excruciatingly suspenseful reading.” —Laura Miller, Salon.com “Gripping and enraging. . . . Bonner’s book is not a treatise against the death penalty. Rather, it is a look at what happens in America’s justice system when justice is absent.” —The Economist “Accomplished and meticulously researched. . . . Convincing . . . As a piece of reporting, the book is masterful. Bonner builds the story, and his argument, carefully, rarely editorializing, mixing in a précis of capital punishment in the United States. . . . Bonner’s book is an important addition to the body of evidence against the death penalty.” —Ethan Gilsdorf, The Boston Globe “A revealing look at how police and courts grapple with death penalty cases. . . . If you are a staunch advocate of the death penalty . . . you’re precisely the person who should read Anatomy of Injustice.” —Nicholas Varchaver, Fortune “The investigation . . . makes for a gripping read, and exposes some outrageous failures of American justice.” —“The Must List,” Entertainment Weekly “Compelling. . . . Bonner makes us feel the frustration and inhumanity of a justice system gone awry.” —Wilbert Rideau, Financial Times “Fascinating. . . . Anatomy of Injustice moves as swiftly as a great courtroom thriller, and Bonner’s astutely observed characters are as memorable as any you’re likely to encounter in a John Grisham-penned best seller.” —Doug Childers, The Richmond Times-Dispatch “One of the best books written about a dubious conviction. . . . Bonner’s volume is special for the way it entwines the lives of the principal characters with the nation’s inglorious history of racial discrimination and capital punishment.” —Rob Warden, Chicago Tribune “Gripping, suspenseful, and electrifying. . . . This should be required reading for anyone who believes in justice.” —John J. Kelly, Cincinnati CityBeat “A gifted storyteller, Bonner’s prose is at once stately and matter-of-fact. . . . In the context of true crime, of murder stories most especially, [Bonner’s details] assume a captivating glow. . . . As a portrait of contemporary American life, immersed in culture wars and classism, and clogged with the residues of racism, Anatomy of Injustice is authoritative and fascinating. As a study in how things can go from bad to worse, how entire lives can be crushed under the wheels of the justice system, it’s also urgent and necessary.”  —José Teodoro, The Edmonton Journal “A lucid, page-turning account. . . . Elmore’s defense winds through nearly three decades of legal maneuverings as suspenseful as the investigation of the mysterious crime itself. Painstakingly researched by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bonner, the case illustrates in fascinating and wrenching specificity the widely acknowledged inequality and moral failings of the death penalty, while illuminating the less understood details of a criminal justice system deeply compromised by race and class. Indeed, Bonner’s ability to succinctly and vividly incorporate the relevant case history and explain the operative legal procedures and principles at work—including the bizarre way in which court-acknowledged innocence is not necessarily enough to spare a life on death row—makes this not only a gripping human story but a first-rate introduction to the more problematic aspects of American criminal law.” —Starred review, Publishers Weekly “Fascinating. . . . Dexterous. . . . Well-researched. . . . Bonner’s description of decades of bungling is a reminder of the ways class and race can shape outcomes in the American legal system.” —Margaret Quamme, The Columbus Dispatch “Far-ranging in its implications, thoughtful, and utterly absorbing, this book is a fine example of involving narrative nonfiction.” —Booklist “Sharp. . . . A powerfully intimate look at how the justice system works—or doesn’t work—in capital cases.” —Kirkus “Those interested in human rights, issues of race, and inner workings of the U.S. legal system—not to mention true crime fans—will want to read this book.”  —Library Journal “Bonner’s gripping true-crime thriller shines a shocking light on American justice. I couldn’t put it down.” —Jane Mayer, author of The Dark Side “Race, sex, and murder in a Southern town are the explosive core of Raymond Bonner’s legal drama. Anatomy of Injustice is also a brave dispatch from the trenches of a forgotten war over capital punishment. Told with a reporter’s tenacity, a lawyer’s acumen, and an advocate’s zeal, this book is both a gripping narrative and a chilling indictment of America’s justice system.” —Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic “Anatomy of Injustice demonstrates dramatically and shockingly what bad lawyers are capable of doing, and is an inspiring example of what a good one can do. For that alone, law schools should assign it to every entering student.”  —Stephen Engelberg, managing editor, ProPublica “Raymond Bonner uses his skill as a lawyer and journalist to take us on a fascinating journey deep into the heart of the criminal justice system, where the stakes could not be higher or the failures more disturbing. Anatomy of Injustice reads like a novel, but it is, tragically, all too true.”  —Linda Greenhouse, author of Becoming Justice Blackmun “Most of us Americans don't have a clue about how the criminal court system really operates and we need a good writer like Bonner to take us through, step by step. But be warned: If you have pressing duties waiting, don't begin reading this book. This is seductive storytelling at its best.”  —Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking “Reading Raymond Bonner’s compelling account of a grossly botched murder case, I was overcome by outrage at the state of our criminal justice system. Rigorously researched and powerfully told, Anatomy of Injustice could—and should—change the national debate on the death penalty.”  —Michael Massing "Raymond Bonner's Anatomy of Injustice is a powerful and poignant analysis of the case of Edward Lee Elmore. Bonner's voice is a profound force for truth and justice in our difficult times!" —Cornel West

Do not read this book unless you are prepared to have your views on the death penalty and our American justice system challenged. This is a powerful story of a South Carolina murder trial where planted evidence and perjury were used to convict and sentence to death a mentally retarded African American man; it's the story of inept defense lawyers and a politically driven "justice" system which rewards winning over fairness and truth - even when a man's life is at stake. This journey through our court system is engaging, thought-provoking, and often disturbing. When I started reading this book, I did so because of a general interest in true crime and our court system. At page one, my belief was that while the death penalty is often applied unjustly and capriciously in some states, it is appropriate for our more heinous criminals. As the author states, there are certain "horrific crimes" which "swell the ranks of capital punishment advocates and makes it hard for death penalty agnostics not to become believers." I didn't expect to be swayed from this belief. I was wrong. In particular, I was shocked to learn how difficult it is to be granted a re-trial after one is convicted, fairly or not, of a crime - even if that conviction results in a death sentence. As the author bluntly states, "Innocence alone does not entitle a defendant to a new trial." He quotes Herrera v. Collins: "Due process does not require that every conceivable step be taken, at whatever cost, to eliminate the possibility of convicting an innocent person. To conclude otherwise would all but paralyze our system for enforcement of the criminal law." The author summarizes this by saying, "the need for finality in legal proceedings sometimes trumps what might be seen as fundamental fairness." The Supreme Court further states that once a defendant has had a fair trial, "the presumption of innocence disappears." In dissent, Justice Blackmun stated, "I believe it contrary to any standard of decency to execute someone who is actually innocent. The execution of a person who can show that he is innocent comes perilously close to simple murder." It's too bad that his was a minority opinion."Anatomy of Injustice" is as captivating as any thriller; the characters in this tale are intriguing and the plot chillingly unbelievable for a work of non-fiction."If there is a flaw in the adversarial system of justice that has developed in America, it is that the adversarial nature of it outweighs justice."Highly recommended.

A well-written book. A bit long, but the complex ins-and-outs of the justice system, whereby a man could be on death row for 25 years (wrongfully) is not a quick and easy tale to tell. (I recommend that you read this book with a 3x5 card in hand to jot down the names and IDs of the various players in the "story", to make it easier for you to refer back to, as you read. I didn't do this, but I wish I had.) Our justice system is clearly very flawed, and the reader wants to interject shouts into the proceedings: Why don't you ask "this"? What about "that"?The deck was clearly stacked against Edward Elmore, a poor southern uneducated black man. The South Carolina justice system is definitely not favorable to obtaining "justice" as we normally think of justice. A rush to judgement attitude prevailed within the police investigation and then in the prosecutors' office. The State clearly just wanted to clear its books on the crime. We read about these situations in the news periodically. But, it only becomes obvious when someone collects all the data over time and compiles it into a narrative book like this that we see the true nature of our justice system. We can only hope that this is an exception and not the rule. It definitely gives one pause in thinking about the death penalty -- if only because our system is not set up to be flawless. If this example is assumed to be typical, then Houston, we have a problem. The book does not delve into the larger matter to weigh how big a problem this is in our justice system. This is a snapshot of one case. Not even a high-profile case. So, even if the reader supports the death penalty for the "truly evil", the flaws inherent in the justice system and the uneven application of the death penalty argue against having it available as an option. Much background information is also presented about the death penalty and the justice system in general. But, it truly would be an interesting study to see just how many cases of wrongful conviction and suspected wrongful conviction there are in this country. We need to improve some very basics in our justice system -- even if we're not talking about the death penalty. This book is a good intro to the flaws that we can surmise are rampant in the administration of American justice. Perhaps someone would argue that this was just a fluke. But, the repetition of the same legal issues over 25 years argues that this case is not a fluke. It represents the system.

I read a lot about the injustices of our "justice" system, so I did not expect to be all that surprised by the details in this book. I was, in fact, shocked. The enormity of corruption and prejudice, from the police to the lawyers (both prosecution and so-called defense) and right to the judge, is just appalling. While the initial trial was a farce, what really struck me hard were the hurdles and blockades involved in obtaining a new, fair trial. Once a person has been convicted, the system wants to keep its hold. Despite obvious corruption, suppressed evidence, perjury, and more, our justice system was intent on killing a poor, mentally retarded, innocent black man. This is not justice. This is state-sanctioned murder. The research here is impeccable, and Raymond Bonner lays out the facts in a compelling manner. This book is easy to read, as far as writing style. But the content will - and should - leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the way our legal system works.
