Review

“Like the Petersonian original, this new How to Know the Birds is illustrated with simple and appealing drawings, this time from the pencil of N. John Schmitt. The cover is a tour de force of book design, with words and image overlapped and intertwined—a perfect evocation of what is inside, a wonderful text combining science, art, and joy in a way sure to inspire any birder.” –Tucson Audubon"You can’t find a better guide to birds and birding than Ted Floyd. This snappy, chatty book is a fascinating primer to both, and will make you a much better, wiser birder." --Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind"What a delightful study of birds and birding, smart, witty, engaging, and beautifully observed.  If you love birds and want to know them (and their devoted watchers) better, this book is for you--to dip into and to revisit for the priceless rules of thumb."  --Jennifer Ackerman“Birding is our most democratic way to connect to nature, because birds are everywhere — from inner cities to the deepest wilderness. Here’s a new take on birding certain to inspire people to connect more deeply with the lives around them." —Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, The Nature Principle and Vitamin N"This is an introduction to 21st century birding, where digital tools, global data sharing, and an acknowledgement of the dynamism of a rapidly changing earth combine with good old fashioned love of the birds. Ted Floyd teaches us that seeing the bird and checking it off a list isn’t really the core pleasure of birding—it is knowing  the bird—its behavior, ecology, personality, and role in the evolving human ecology of the Anthropocene, that is the true pleasure of contemporary birding. Buy it for anyone you want to fall in love with birds, or for yourself, so as to fall in love a bit more."–Emma Marris, author of Rambunctious Garden“Birds—clearly the heroes in this engaging volume—have so much to teach us about ourselves and our world. You’ll find your curiosity and delight growing with each page.”  –David Yarnold, President and CEO of the National Audubon Society.

How to Know the Birds: The Art and Adventure of Birding by Ted Floyd is a book which intends to inform novice and enthusiasts alike. Mr. Floyd is the editor of Birding Magazine and, of course, an avian aficionado himself.I know next to nothing about birds, sometimes I wish I knew more, especially when out in nature with the kids. Not to worry though, that doesn’t happen very often. But I always enjoy learning new stuff. How to Know the Birds: The Art and Adventure of Birding by Ted Floyd consists of short, readable sections on many types of bird. It is clear from the writing that the author is not only knowledgeable, but also very enthusiastic about every word printed.I was expecting an off-the-shelf bird watching field guide, with pictures, stats and identifiers – but this is not this type of book. Instead I got a memoir / guide, which allowed me to appreciate birds more than I ever thought would be possible for me.For a novice like myself, I enjoyed the introductory section which talked about birds that I often see in my back yard. As a technologist, the section of how technology changed ornithology was especially fascinating.Even though bird watching has changed with the times, Mr. Floyd does insist that some things do stay the same. Learn as much as you can and appreciate nature for what it is.

This is a delightful book to keep by your side for a quick read when you have 5 or 10 minutes here or there. To me, it wasn’t the kind of book you sat down and read from cover to cover. It is comprised of a series of essays taken from Birding Magazine. This is not a bird identification book, it offers insights into bird behaviors and into the birding world. The reader will learn about migration patterns, how bird classifications work, why birds came to be named what they are named; I was fascinated to learn that the pileated woodpecker got his name from a Latin word that means felt hat. There are many more interesting tidbits to learn about our avian friends in this handy book. It’s the kind of book you keep by the bed to read a few essays before you go to sleep. As it has no plot there is nothing to keep you from stopping after an essay finishing and you end on a learning note.I received a free copy for my honest review

Although the beautiful cover of Birding magazine editor Ted Floyd's How to Know the Birds may lead you to believe that this will be your typical book about birds, you would be wrong. Many bird books are field guides, with page after page of color photos or drawings of birds, along with short descriptions of what the bird look like and where you find them. Floyd's book is different. He begins by describing the history of birding, referencing the seminal books in the field. It was a quiet, gentle, often solitary study by people with sketchpads, pencils, binoculars and notebooks. Then he takes us into the present, where birding has evolved like most things- people use their smartphones to take photos to upload to numerous Facebook pages devoted to birding. There are apps to help birders organize and connect with other birders. It is much more immediate and social.Floyd introduces us to 200 bird species, each one getting a page but not necessarily a drawing. (There are a small number of beautiful pencil drawings by N. John Schmitt that accompany some of the text.)The contents are divided into six sections, organized by the calendar year, beginning with Spark Bird, which covers January-February. He discusses the birds you will likely find during those months in North America, gives the common name for the bird, such as American Robin, then its scientific name Turdus migratorius, which always capitalizes the first letter of the first name and the second name always begins with a smaller case letter. He gives you a short description of the bird, and interesting fact about the bird that is the title of the page. For the essay titled He Says, She Says, we learn about the Great Horned Owl and the difference between the sounds the male and female makes. In The Upside of Human-Modified Landscapes, he talks about the Canada Goose and how these geese have evolved to "flourish in human-dominated landscapes" living near high-rise office buildings, on golf courses and wreaking havoc near airports.Floyd sprinkles in pop culture references, talking about the movie On Golden Pond in the essay about the Common Loon, or comparing a Star Trek TV series scene to a large nest which holds a tiny Bushtit. He of course mentions the Jack Black/Steve Martin movie The Big Year, perhaps the only movie about birding ever made. The book ends with a helpful checklist of all the birds described by species. How to Know the Birds is really written for the person who enjoys birding as a serious hobby more than for a person looking to get into birding. It would make a wonderful gift for your favorite birder, maybe in an Easter basket.

Review

"A reporting tour de force and reminiscent of Cadillac Desert, the 1986 book by Marc Reisner that is required reading for anyone seeking to understand water policy in the West. McGraw’s work is similarly nuanced, thoroughly researched and beautifully written. .  . McGraw showcases a deep understanding of Texas law, history and culture. There’s a desire not just to explain where we stand now, but how we got here." (Texas Observer 2018-05-02)"Water is set to become the world’s most important commodity. It will be access to water that will determine which communities thrive. It will be the ability of state and local governments to set and enforce water conservation policies that will determine the long-term viability of the quickly growing cities and suburbs being planted in the desert. . . we need to worry about the right things. . . Start worrying about water." (Inside Higher Ed 2018-05-10)"McGraw's book proves that the United States simply isn't ready for the next big drought or flood. This is a problem that's been brewing for a long time, and climate change is about to make it worse. Gulp." (EcoWatch 2018-05-02)"Although A Thirsty Land is Texas-based, it raises questions about water as a resource and commodity that fits any location; questions we should all be considering regardless of where we live and the prodigiousness of our local water resources." (Block Island Times 2018-06-01)"In stark prose that often gleams like a bone pile bleached in the sun, McGraw travels back and forth across Texas to give a free-ranging but deadeye view of the crisis on the horizon." (Texas Monthly 2018-07-01)"It’s hard to write about the slow creep of environmental crises like drought without resorting to shock tactics or getting lost in the weeds…[McGraw] draws out the conflicts in compelling ways by drilling into the plight of individual water users. Even if you feel no connection to Texas, these stories are relevant to every part of the country." (Outside 2018-07-17)"Interviewing both scientific experts and everyday water users, [McGraw] clearly delineates the competing interests, describes political and geological reality, and makes a compelling argument for statewide water policy that utilizes modern technology and fairly weighs parochial needs against the good of the whole." (Arizona Daily Star, Southwest Books of the Year 2019-01-05)"Readers will put the book down with a sense of urgency, a set of strategies, and a feeling of hope." (Texas Books in Review 2019-02-08)

"A timely, important book that manages to be a romp, too. You’ll meet dreamers, schemers, and even a few genuine heroes who have been fretting and feuding over the water woes of the Lone Star State for centuries. By the time you finish A Thirsty Land, you’ll understand that water truly is destiny—and not just in Texas. Seamus McGraw raises urgent questions that we will all have to face to avoid a parched future." (Dan Fagin, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Toms River)"In Texas, water is the stuff dreams are made of—but there has never been enough to go around. Seamus McGraw’s thorough and insightful history of the state’s water wars gives us an unsparing look at the nightmares in our past and invites us to wake up and prepare for a future of scarcity." This is a book for anyone who wishes to know "what's it all about" - this thing about water and Texas. I thought I knew a lot about the relationship of water to Texas. How wrong I was. Trust me. You want to read this book.

Fabulous book. Extremely researched and presented in fabulous format.

The library has not been able to keep this book in the library everyone is reading it.

I learned a lot by reading this book. It contains harsh but a truthful warning.

A study of the American water crisis with a look at how it has been handled in the past, and potential solutions for the future. I was particularly interested in this project because at its center are the problems Texas has with water, and since it is my home for the foreseeable feature, I need to know as much as I can about this problem in this particular geographic setting. Here in Quanah, where my little house is, there’s a drought every winter and crops have difficulty growing. Meanwhile, everybody is familiar with the great flood that drowned Houston last hurricane season. So, water is attacking Texas from all directions, and environmental regulations are particularly loose in this part of the country, so advice is needed to keep the citizens of Texas from drowning themselves. The author, Seamus McGraw, is an award-winning journalist and has published a couple of books on climate change previously. In this project, in addition to standard research methods, McGraw interviewed farmers, ranchers, businesspeople, citizen activists and politicians to gather their opinions and experiences on this issue. The book has suspense written into it, as the narrator prepares readers for a payoff and then goes back and gives historic background, so readers have a reason to read until the end. The payoff in the first chapter is that on August 5, 1969 (in the middle of another drought), Texas voted against a plan that would have re-directed the waters of the Mississippi River into it to satisfy its thirst for water. The rest of the chapter explains how Texas changed from a rural state to one dominated by industry and business around this same time. Most of the chapters have very cryptic names that do not give away their contents easily, like “Dow by Law” and “That’s the Kind of Thinking That Will Get Your Land Took from You.” The latter sounds very Texan, but it is difficult to imagine what this has to do with water. The chapter starts just as mysteriously with: “Maybe it was the way the summer sun glided through the lush leaves of the white oaks, the pecans, the hickories, and the ash on the far bank” (39). This is a very beautiful image, and McGraw continues with descriptions of boys playing, the river, oaks, and the like for a page before he starts arriving at his point: Texans were coming to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for water like they used to come for timber by 2000. The problem mentioned in the chapter title is finally explained at the end of the second page: “even landowners miles removed from the proposed reservoir site could lose control of their land in the process of providing the growing metroplex with affordable water” (40). The chapter includes lengthy dialogues between conflicting sides. It also includes a lengthy speech on the subject with specific numbers and projections. Across the book, there are great illustrations of the impact of various water-related changes on the land. This book would have been improved from a research perspective if it had more subheadings in the chapters that explained what points each section is covering. I would have appreciated if the chapters also had simpler to process titles, so I could more easily find the exact information that might be relevant to a particular research project I am doing. As it stands, it is inviting for casual readers who are interested in a good read or who might be passionate about this issue and in need of some background information. This is definitely a good thing for them. But, anybody who needs the raw data and digested information to figure out what strategies in this book can be of practical use, will just have to slow down and read the whole things to get these bits. It’s not totally inaccessible though as the Index is pretty detailed and includes the names of the main water developments covered. The “Notes” section is pretty light, as it includes articles from newspapers, court documents, development reports, and a few books. Once again, this is definitely not a scholarly, but rather a general interest book. Since a democracy decides Texas’ and the countries’ water policies, there is definitely a greater need for a readable general interest book on this topic like this project, rather than a more intensive scholarly analysis that might be unreadable for almost everybody that actually votes in America. So, great book overall, very intensely written with interesting and impactful information.Pennsylvania Literary Journal: Spring 2018 Reviews: Anaphora Literary Press

I cannot wait to finish this book. The portions I've read have been great.

#615,106 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I bought this book because I had an old computer that was pushing the limits of what it could do in order to keep up with the latest software. When I went to the store, I didn't really have any idea what all of the numbers and letters meant on all of the parts. I was totally lost! After reading this book, I could walk into the computer store with confidence and ask specifically for the parts that I needed to make my upgrade. Since I was able to do that, I didn't feel so behind the technology curve after all. The money I paid for this book was definitely well spent. The first 40% of the book covers the parts and tools necessary for building or repairing your own computer. This was the part that I found most useful as it covers the specs of the parts. This saved me from buying parts that would not be compatible with my older computer. The next 40% covers building computers. This is broken down into chapters for different types of computers, so you'll get plans and instructions for building anything from a budget computer to a high-performance gaming computer. The last 20% covers how to repair and maintain a computer. If you're thinking of building your own computer or ugrading an older one, this book has everything in one package. The only downside is that if you just want to upgrade a computer, you won't be able to use the 40% that covers building computers. However, it might just inspire you to build your own someday.

I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to build a computer and had very limited knowledge about the inner workings and specifications of the various components. This book explained the basics very well. It also shows you how to install components, adjust the bios, and a lot more There are also complete builds you could follow in the book. I did build a computer and it works great. I could not of done it without this book; that and a little research on the internet. Using this knowledge base I put together this computer and it runs great. Boots into windows in 25 seconds. Plays any game Ive tried at max settings.Cool Master case: Nvidia edition sli certifiedam3 Nvidia nforce atx board 3-way sliAMD Phenom II quad core2 EVGA geforce 9800 gtx+ linked sliVelocity raptor 300 gb hdWestern Dig Green 1 tb hdKingston 4 X 2 gb ddr3 sdram 1333Liteon dvd/cd read/write/etc2 23" monitorsWin 7 pro 64

I made the mistake about 5 years ago of buying Anand Lal Shimpi's book about building your own computer. It was garbage for me because it was a bunch of nonsense computer history and technobabble. I built a computer after reading it, but it was pretty ho-hum and I didn't have much of a clue what I was doing. In fact, I didn't even understand that the PSU (power supply) was a separate component after reading the book!Build It, Fix It, Own It was the perfect book for me. I'm a technology guy, but I don't give a rat's behind about a lengthy discussion on Front Side Bus and HyperThreading. I want the gist of what makes up a computer, and succinct explanations for how to buy and put one together. This book does that, and even mocks the ridiculous names given to computer parts (while still explaining them in simple terms). If you want to build a computer, but don't want an encyclopedia of technobabble and computer history, this is your book.

While much of the info is dated, the underlying principles are still sound. I have used this volume many times while working on systems, and I have learned a lot from it. I love the pictures, they really help. It kind of reminds me of a Chilton car repair manual, only for PCs. I hope they come out with an updated version soon.

This book was very good, though not the best PC Building book I've read. I chose this one because it was published recently (2008) and I wanted something that was up-to-date on current technology. The book did not disappoint in that area. Overall, the book did a nice job walking you through each component of a PC and giving you advice on how to select the right components. This book will definitely be of use to both beginner and experienced PC builders. With no prior knowledge, you will be able to build a great computer by following the advice in this book. My only complaint is that I occasionally still had questions about certain components after reading the section on those component. However, I do not feel like this significantly detracted from the usefulness of the book.

It's a good book, but it was copyrighted 2008.Dual processing was new then.I am getting old, and didn't think to check. It does have good info. anyone can use.

Ok

ALTHOUGH I HAVEN'T FINISHED THE BOOK AS YET I FIND THAT IT IS A VERY COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF HOW A COMPUTER WORKS, INCLUDING THE BEST COMPONIENTS TO USE IN BUILDING OR UPDATING A COMPUTER.I'M SURE THAT WHEN I HAVE COMPLETED IT I WILL BE ABLE TO UPDATE AN OLD COMPUTER THAT I HAVE HADHERE WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE INTENDED TO ALL ALONG.

This is the only LSAT study book I've purchased, and I'd say it's worth it to buy a used copy. I really just wanted to learn the diagramming strategies, and it gave fairly clear explanations of those. I also thought that the pace at which the question difficulty increased was good. I worked through the whole book in about 4 days (maybe 14-16 hours). I think I made a good selection, and don't plan on buying another book (just previous tests for practice). However, there are several outright errors in the text as well as some things I thought were very poorly explained. Details follow:First, if-then statements are introduced in Ch. 5 (pages 85-6 in the 2010 edition), and the author makes several explicit references to formal logic. However, it isn't until page 254 that the author notes in an aside that if-then statements on the LSAT are not actually treated the same way as they are in formal logic. (In formal logic, the truth-value of an if-then is automatically T whenever the antecedent is false. I still don't really understand how if-thens are treated on the LSAT, because the book's explanation leaves me confused as to how if-then is distinguished from iff. I'm not sure whether that's entirely the fault of the book or if it's because I'm so accustomed to formal logic.) This lack of clarity made some of the examples and the corresponding explanations of the answers extremely confusing; for example, on page 90, formal logic would dictate that all of the answers could be true, though apparently only one is.Second, I'm fairly certain that the "Rank and File" game on pages 208-210 is not set up properly. I worked through the second question (top of 210) multiple times on different days and arrived at the same answer each time, but that answer wasn't one of the options. I then guilted my older brother (a math prodigy, pretty much, and also familiar with formal logic) into spending 10 minutes of his Christmas break working through the whole problem. All I told him was which question I was having trouble with, and he arrived at the same conclusion I did: the reasoning in the walk-through of the answer is simply flawed (specifically, "If Ursula were the fifth of these, then Violet also wouldn't be ranked, which is a contradiction." First, Ursula would be the fourth, not the fifth; second, neither of us could see anything that would make that a contradiction, even with the different if-then meaning). Again, we both identified that same line as the issue independently. Finally, while I didn't happen to note the page (or even the chapter), there's at least one question that has a typo in one or more of the answers (one of the "chips" is listed twice, and it wasn't intended as a trick to disqualify the answer; it's simply wrong). All that said, I found the book to be very helpful overall, and I'm glad to have the three full practice sections to work through in addition to all the examples. If you want to be really optimistic, you can pretend that the errors in the book are a source of fun, extra practice as you second-guess the explanations the author provides. If that rings too hollow for you, comfort yourself with the fact that most of it seems accurate, and there are always actual LSAT questions to rely on for practice instead of the ones the author came up with, so it's still worth it to buy a used copy.

This book is AWESOME. Coming from someone who did not understand logic games at all, this book easily taught me. The book goes very slow and takes you step by step each kind of logic game that the LSAT offers. It even has sample games with answers in the back of the book. I really actually grew to enjoy solving the games because of this book! Highly recommend!

The methods this book teaches are not the easiest to use in my opinion. The Manhattan prep books are the best. This book is all right but will leave you only partly prepared and when you use another book to supplement, the methods will be different and confuse you even more. So just start out with a good and exhaustive book from the start.

The book gives very logical and clear explanations. The author presents the material in an easy-to-follow format. Be aware that the book has several typos, but these are fairly easy to see. There is one error worth mentioning:Page 155, Solution to Game 3(MISTAKE 1)First H is (correctly) attached to B; suddenly it's (incorrectly) attached to P.(MISTAKE 2)On the continuation of explaining this game on page 157, the answer provided says that the possibilities are:FBPSHDGBFDPSHGBDFPSHGDBFPSHGThe problem clearly states that F always comes before B ("He goes to the bookstore sometime after the florist..."), so this is obviously incorrect. The correct answer is:FBPSHDGFBDPSHGFDBPSHGDFBPSHGOther than that, the book is actually very well-written. It breaks logic games down for you. Other books I've seen just give examples and explanations, but seem to not really give you a set of tools for solving the games. This book will give you a method to solve every problem.

I bought this book because I am awful at logic games and wanted a way to improve on them without paying for a class. I found that the book is inconsistent in some ways, such as how to symbolize facts about each game. Further, the author does not sufficiently explain how he arrives at his conclusions and makes the deductions that he does. Either my logical skills are really subpar or he does not explain thoroughly enough. I ended up buying the ExamKrackers Analytical Reasoning book and have been much more satisfied. I would highly recommend that book instead.

I found this book to be very helpful. In many ways, I found the problems in this book to be harder than the problems encountered on the actual LSAT.

After reading "LSAT for Dummies" and trying a few official LSAT prep-tests, I knew that I needed an organized strategy for solving the Analytical Reasoning questions. This book was exactly what I had hoped! The author categorizes the games into two basic forms and then develops the strategies by adding more complex rules in subsequent chapters. A section at the end of the book is devoted to possible games that are less common. I highly recommend this book because it is incredibly helpful for a reasonable price!

This was the hardest section of the LSAT by far for me. And this book breaks it down into small, easier to manage lessons and it really helped me improve.

Howard Fast (1914--2003) was best known for his historical novels such as _The Unvanquished_ (1942), _Citizen Tom Paine_ (1943), _Sparticus_ (1951), and _April Morning_ (1961). Under the pseudonym E.V. Cunningham, he wrote several excellent mystery stories. _The Edge of Tomorrow_ (1961) is Fast's first collection of science fiction stories."The Large Ant" appeared in the penultimate issue of _Fantastic Universe_ as "The Big Ant" and was one of the most famous stories to appear in that magazine. It has since been reprinted many times. The other six tales all appeared in _Fantasy and Science Fiction_ between 1959 and 1960. Some (like "The First Men," "Cato the Martian," and "The Martian Shop") had some fame. Others (like "Of Time and Cats" and "The Sight of Eden") were little known beyond this collection."The Large Ant" is about a writer who encounters a large, antlike creature on a fishing trip. He instinctively kills it. But then he feels a sense of guilt. It does him no good to say that most other people would have done the same thing, for he feels that the human race is being judged as well-- and being found wanting."The First Men" is about a growing number of feral children who are appearing round the world. Is it a step forward in God's plan for peace? Or a step backward into bestiality?"Cato the Martian" is a statesman who says that Earth must be destroyed, root and branch. One scholarly philosopher opposes him. Who proves to be right? Who proves to be righteous?"The Martian Shop" is a terrific science fiction mystery. Three shops open in Japan, Paris, and New York City at the same time-- apparently staffed by Martians and offering fantastic products for sale. What is their game? Fast's attention to detail keeps this story lively on repeated rereadings. This is my favorite tale in the collection."The Cold, Cold Box" poses the same problem as Ursula K. le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas". Suppose that you have a group of people-- intelligent, high-minded, heterogeneous, civilized-- who owe their existence to the suffering of one scapegoat. _Is their existence justified?_ In Fast's story, the vote is put before the group of people. The outcome is a foregone conclusion."Of Time and Cats" is a lightweight comedy of time travel and matter duplication. A piece done just for fun. And "The Sight of Eden" is about the space travelers from Earth who do indeed reach Eden, but who don't-- quite-- fit in.Howard Fast's political novels have a strong political slant to them. I believe that we may say that Fast favors freedom defenders over authoritarian figures, those critical of our faults over those who are overly righteous, and Mark Twain over Cato the Censor. You will also find a strong moral theme to most of these stories, which gives them an added depth.

A bird's eye view of the work among the Vietcong in the early 60s and the good the Americans did to help. Not really a book on missions, more about his concern for humanity.

there are many short tales, all of them full of incredible imagination. it is an old book, but filled with new energy

Some tales are amazing

First Men one of my all time favorite futuristic stories.

This is the second book written by Dr. Thomas Dooley, a now well-known doctor of the Navy over 6 decades ago. This adventure details setting up a way of providing his volunteer medical humanitarian program in which to aid those isolated from medicine in Southeast Asia...Laos. This doctor/author could not escape the yearning he had to medically help those living in the mountains of Laos...the 'untouchables'...those who fled from Communist rule who therefore lived in poverty, isolation and possibly life as nomads, because of it their situation.I happened to read the 2nd book before the first. I must say that the Reviewers prior, gave affirmative reviews. I would buy this book due to their reviews. But this is mine about Operation Laos....in a kingdom of magical beauty by means of lucious green fields, rice paddies, jungles and people. To reach this remote area, Dr. Dooley combined a team that dedicated themselves to traveling into unchartered territory to Westerners, in order to set up medical facilities to help those inflicted with medical injuries and untreated diseases: Those who desirved the chance to live like human beings with this team's aid of medical care, positive thinking, cleanliness and given medical direction...to care for their own proper hygeine. There was so much to accomplish, not excluding having to operate on people with no electricity, but thus was acomplished with the useage of generators. Companies believing in this expedition donated such generous items as generators, batterey opperated equipment, to cooking gear and more. This team of 'want to be' medical humanitarians (back in the 1950's) had apparently impressed even the global medical community. Thousands of dollars worth of medications, vacines, equipment, meal suppliments, vitamins, nutrients, clothing and even medical books were over-whelmingly given. (Move over witch doctors...but not until the team asked them to--with honor and respectability.)These Laotian Buddhists were living on a very rationed diet of all they could really find and sometimes barter for...that of rice and fish. They did not know anything about maintaining good health, begining with the water they drank and used. Poor nutritional habits affected mothers nursing newborns and thus was the way for these communities when the medical teams saw the majority of children with their protruding bellies. But the team prepared themselves for what lay ahead...Malaria constant from jungle exposure, cholrea, still-birth pregnancies, everyone infected with lice, cases of gangrene and more than enough people unfortunate to be the victim of leprosy. Once a child's clef lip was operated on and fixed, many more with this unfortunate disfigurment came to the medical camp with parents who wanted the same results for their child. Thank God the world community made this mission possible for Dr. Dooley to carry out most all of the treatments which these people faced. He and his team were definately heaven sent, as were their costly supplies.Eventually the medical team needed to leave the area and travel down the Nam Tha River in 'pirogues' (dug out canoes--like other's call them in Asia and Africa), where eventually this river meets up with the mighty Meekong (which is a river I wrote a book review about--you would find it in my book reviews under J. Lavoie). But the mountain people of Laos did not want the medical team to travel the river in search of villages scattered among it because they thought they'd be killed because of their skin color. However, the team knew of other villages that would also need their medical skills and also be in need of vacines, medical supplies and medical attention. Luckily, their sincere practices were sensed as such among the river's other villagers. They accepted what this'white men medical team' was giving their lives for traveling down the river. They could not believe that humanitarians existed in Western civalization....as that was what they were taught by the iron rule of Communism. This hard cover book includes several photos of the people they cared for, as well as sharing how extremely poor the people were in this area of the world. The book is amazing and I recommend it very highly. I did not pass by one paragraph unread. Great humanity is explored among those having no knowledge of loving care, until this team intervened. However, if they could read books, they would know that going out of one's way to help others, was among that of their Lord Buddha's teachings.Bless all of those humanitarians who cover the globe doing the good will of everyone's God.

Sorry, I am not a Sci-Fi fan!

Bought it thinking it would be along the lines of the movie. It was not. All they did was take one idea out of the book to make an entire movie. Had I known that I would not have bought it. The book on its own was ok.

Assigned for my 8th grader's humanities class, I purchased for Kindle for my daughter. As young adult historical fiction, it was an interesting, easy read. For further "Disney-fication" of our nation's history it is probably contemptible. As a parent, I felt the author put a too much emphasis on the importance of children hiding the truth from their parents. While learning how and when to lie are an important part of growing up, hiding mental illness is still a problem today. This book probably isn't going to encourage contemporary children to seek help for themselves or family members with mental health issues. If you want to learn about Patrick Henry, try a different book, perhaps nonfiction. If you are looking for an interesting fiction with tidbits of fact tossed in, it's fun and engagingly written.Note: the kindle version is full of typos ie. "lie" was replaced with "die"or "HE" in multiple locations.

I generally adore her works, but being a decent of Patsey Henry and the Fontaines I did not like the context of this work. Patsey was a devoted daughter and the one child by his side when he passed away. No family records indicate that any of the children ever considered that they might go insane like their mother. While I understand that the author states that these are her conjectures, I fear that students will not truly recognize this. How sad, with all of the decedents and the society with all the information that Ms. Rinnaldi never considered being more accurate.

Love this book. Bought for my granddaughter, picked it up to read the first few pages and couldn't put it down!

I got this historical novel because my son was reading it in school and wanted to discuss it with me. I am very glad I did. This is the story of Patrick Henry's family during the time of the American Revolution; during a time of great stress for them. It's told from the viewpoint of the two oldest girls and is a fascinating read. The author has taken meager records and historical facts and woven them into in gripping story.

This is a good historical novel for younger readers. I enjoyed it, but didn't realize it was not written for adults. A great writer for the younger set. I did enjoy the suspense. Historically accurate.

I didn't know too much about Patrick Henry other than his famous words. Great glimpse into his family background and into life in colonial America

As a guide at Scotchtown, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that Ms. Rinaldi brought the house to life with the voices of Mr. Henry's children. The Henry family dealt with complicated issues in growing up 200 years ago just as young people must deal with difficult issues today.Just to clarify a point, however--Sarah was not kept in the dry well. Scotchtown has a summer bedroom in the English basement, which is very typical for any 18th century Virginia home, and it is there that Sarah stayed during her tragic illness. It has windows for sunlight and a fireplace for heat in winter. Given the options that Mr. Henry had for her care and that we believe he loved Sarah very much, it was the best he could do at the time. The dry well is a completely separate structure used only for food storage. [...]

Killer book.
