I came across this story of the Sofia because a sailing friend of mine, upon whose story my own second novel Waves: A Novel by Dave Bricker is modeled, had an encounter with the ship in the Caribbean during the 1970s. Though my account of that meeting is highly fictionalized (and as yet unpublished - look for "Currents" towards the end of 2011), I became intrigued with the story, and purchased this book to supplement my research.I cruised a small sailboat solo during the 80s and 90's, and though my own story is quite different from Pam Bitterman's, I can appreciate any book that approaches seafaring authentically. Times have changed not only for tall ships, but for cruisers in general. There was a magic "golden age" of cruising that took place at the end of the twentieth century before "yachting" became a sport of the rich. "Shoestring sailors" odd-jobbing their way around the globe are fewer and farther between these days, and the remarkable stories of those people, places and times are worth telling. As a University professor, I see the concept of "just going" to be sadly inconceivable to young people today. That, in itself, is an important message. Likewise, if you go sailing, you'll have the best and worst times of your life. Sailing to the Far Horizon neither glosses over the seasickness, heat, dampness and hard work nor dwells on the almost unbelievably profound beauty of the best of the experience. It's measured and balanced.Though some have accused Bitterman of overwriting, there is a great tradition of Victorian seafaring literature by Conrad, Melville, Dana et al. As a sailor on a tall ship, it's only natural to write with some extra flourish. I found the prose to be an excellent balance between that tradition and today's postmodernist "get on with the story" style. Though the book is set in small type, rather tightly packed, it's well-edited and moves along articulately, without getting bogged down. As the Sofia took on no passengers, only crew, the story asks the reader to "learn the ropes" along the way, but does so without pedantry.Sifting through old photographs, log books and letters, to write and reconstruct any remarkable story is a difficult labor of love, especially when passing decades blend together people and places encountered along the way. Stories such as this are not written for the bestseller list; they are a gift from the writer to those lucky enough to receive them. This is what small presses and self-publishing are all about.

As engaging of a sail adventure tale if there ever were. I was transfixed throughout the book and really didn't want it to end especially as it did.But with all things in life, good tales, good times and often good ships do indeed come to an end.Although true there could had been better editing. And also true the author's use of language is a bit strained and over done but given that this is her first book and the tale she tells is so fascinating and fun I was more than willing to overlook problems in the interpretation of the adventure. I'm just glad she took the effort to put the only accounting of the ship 35 years after it's demise. It made me wish that I hadn't waited so long before sailing in my own life.The biggest suggestion would be to add many more photographs which is so much cheaper in Kindle than printed form.More information on the tales of Sofia in the authors own words can be heard in a very good episode of David Anderson's "Sailing Podcast". She is an even better story telling orallyThe story she has to tell will make you want to join a tall ship commune...or not.

Ms. Sisman's book is a thrilling account recalling the rich tradition of 19th century nautical fiction and travelogues of Melville and Dana, or the rich evocative canvasses of Turner. Like so many restless wanderers in search of themselves, Pamela's memoirs recount an epic journey to exotic ports of call and encounters with people who, without the trappings of our 21st century mall-saturated American culture, manage to maintain serenity, sanity and dignity. At the same time, the book recalls the 70's and the youthful quests all but lost to the "Baby Boom" generation.I recommend this book to anyone who's fascinated with the sea, with travel articles and memoirs, and to anyone who has ever suffered a traumatic experience and lived to move on. Chronicles a fascinating period of time, mostly in Houston, when heart surgery, especially heart transplants, came into mass consciousness. Protagonists Debakey and Cooley are both fascinating, driven characters. A glimpse of things to come for author Thomas Thompson. He went on to write two magnificent true accounts of crimes, Blood and Money, and Serpentine.

When i graduated from nurng school in 1967, Methodist in HOuston wss a leader in.CV surgery My critical care instructor trained there and Dr Debakey was the bomb It is ery interesting to learn more about the programs and personalities involved.

The author has written an excellent book about the great heart surgeons of Houston. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with doctors would enjoy reading this book. Consider

Fascinating insight into two unique characters during a critical time in medical history. Well told by someone with rare access. An epilogue summarizing progress since the end of that initial transplant era would be a good addition.

Like all Thompson's books, this is another page-turner. A wonderfully written tome to the early days of Drs. DeBakey & Cooley.

I gave my old copy away to a dear friend. I was relieved to find another in the same condition. A good and readable history of an amazing era in medical history.

For the price and ease of use, these Lincoln Cents Folder #2, 1941 to 1974, make it easy to start saving your coins into a displayable folder. Great for kits and older kids who want to become coin collectors, those known numismatists. These collectors by definition, are those that learn the hobby of coin collecting as the study of Numismatics, which is the collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money and related objects. I say go for it!

This is a great hobby for kids. Get all three folders. This would be required for all Lincoln pennies, up to present day. The beauty of the last one is that kids can start right away.Most of these Lincoln pennies are easy to come by. Even the first Lincoln penny, the 1909 VDB, uncirculated, can be easily obtained at any coin chop fairly inexpensively. A roll of 50 wheat pennies can be obtained for $10 dollars or less. When I get home from work, there are always a few coins in my pocket for my kids to go through. Wouldn't you know, there always happens to be a wheat penny in there.I have instituted a scheme for my kids' (8 year old boy and 6 year old girl) coin collection. They are in Montessori, in which there is significant independence and schoolwork is less strictly enforced than in public school. My wife and I have differing views on this. I've taken it upon myself to try to do my part. In school, they have a given number of goals which are expected to be done per week. 15 goals per week is the ultimate goal, though sometimes difficult. For this, they get a 1909 VDB penny, or an uncirculated Mercury dime, or a V nickel, or a half dime, or a large penny, or some sort of nice proof. These are usually to be had for about $15. For 12 goals per week, they get a Susan B proof or a common error coin or a some such thing. If they get 12 or more goals per week for 4 weeks in a row, they get something nice, like a Morgan silver dollar. Let me tell you, this works like a charm.A state quarter collection is another great idea. These are of course easy to come by as well.Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I'm excited about this, as are my kids. Back to the review at hand. The folder is cheap. It is thin and bare minimum in regard to quality, materials, etc. For example, the paper under the pennies is so thin that the cover has concavities at each coin. I'm not sure if there are better ones out there without this problem. Another problem is that once a coin is inserted (this takes considerable effort by the way) it is extremely difficult (possibly impossible) to get it out. If you find a better example of the same coin, the poorer one cannot be replaced. I don't know if they are all like this. A small cut-out at the edge of the coin slot would be very nice. The picture of this product on Amazon shows a silver-colored penny. The one you get has a copper-colered penny on the cover, as do the rest in this set. Hope this helps in regard to the product, and in regard to your kids!Adam

Perfect folders for the project I am doing. I bought #1 #2 #3 they all came in great condition and were delivered on Memorial Day very impressed. They were cheap witch is good for I am going to frame them in a frame that can easily have the glass slid to side so you can put any new coins in them.I would suggest if you are just starting out or are making a second set for a misc project to get these. If you want to see the back and front of the coins or would like to have it better protected I would say buy the Albums and not folders.

I bought the entire collection of these folders that is available at the moment. They all arrived within a day of each other, as expected. New users may think they seem small but they are a very compact and inexpensive way to keep your coins organized. A great tool for the beginner or the experienced coin collector. Be sure to lay the binder on a flat, hard surface like a desk or kitchen counter when entering your coins and you should have no problems.

Good for starting elementary school kids on coin collecting or as part of teaching them about making change, large numbers, figuring ages, etc, with some history thrown in. Kids can get the coins in the books with just enough skill and effort required to make it interesting rather than frustrating. The books are sturdy considering they are essentially made of paper. This review also applies to the other penny books. However, the 1975-on book will have cents in it which are much more easy for the child to find in normal change or a dollar's worth of pennies from the bank.

Gave these to my mom for mothers day and she is really enjoying them. They are a great way to pass the time. I would definitely recommend this to beginner collectors. The books themselves are pretty sturdy and once the coin is in there is not going to budge unless of course you really put pressure into pushing it out which might ruin the integrity of the coin slot.

all the pennies minted in these years, plus a few blanks for varieties are covered in this updated #9030 booklet. the booklet itself is much less substantial than the original. it bends and warps easily. (USA vs. China manufactured).

It does what it's meant to do, holds pennies from 1941-74. The coins went in fairly smoothly and were held securely once inserted. The only down side is in my experience, folders don't offer as good of protection as air-tite cases for single coins. If placed in a safe that isn't humidity regulated or opened frequently the coins in folder show signs of "toning" well before those in air-tites... So if you are storing your coins in a safe I recommend either using air-tite capsules or placing silca gel dehumidifiers in there as well (my state quarter collection would have loved me knowing that before hand heheh).

Bought this with the Nickel book and got them at the same time. Great. I like the Whitman coin books. They are a good quality book, and hold the coins securely. I have the State quarter and the State Park quarter books by Whitman, and haven't had any trouble with any of them. Satisfied with my purchase.

I was asked to read this book for school. I wasn't feeling terribly excited to do so. I just have a hard time reading books for school, especially when they are not what I would normally read. However, I started reading this book and I finished half of it in one sitting, going well over and above what was assigned reading. I finished the book in two goes. It was engaging and interesting. This book was powerful and insightful and really helped me to understand the plight of the migrant worker and his family, especially the children of migrant workers. I am planning to buy the other books in the series even though they are not assigned to me, just to understand how this remarkable man came from nothing to a college professor in his life. I was very happy with this book.

Had to read straight through once started. It was hard for me to believe that people lived this way in the United States in the 50's. Being born 20 years after this took place, it gave me a clear picture of the need for the civil rights amendment as well as laws for fair working conditions. What 1000s of migrant families went through is impossible to understand without reading this account; of the migrant workers of America who made it possible for average citizens to enjoy the yummy food that went on tables in the 50's and previous. When I put this book down, I couldn't help but feel grateful (and unworthy) for the easy life I have had. The family is endearing and a testament of parents who try to do good for their children.

I have read this book multiple times, since I have used it as a read-aloud for intermediate students as well as in book groups with adult ESL students. I love how the books grow in sophistication with Panchito, who wrote the books as an adult, using notebooks he kept as a young man, as well as his memory. This book, the first, is very simply written, and the second, about his high school years, grows more explicit about the barriers he faced as a boy from a migrant-worker family. The third and fourth books deal with his time at Santa Clara University, and his graduate time at Columbia in New York.As a frequent reader of the series, and particularly this book, I can state that I have never grown tired of the story, from Panchito's memories of the train trip to Tijuana to crawl under a fence to be met by a coyote who would take the family to the fruit fields, to his first day at school in a time before bilingual education, to his growth in conscience and social awareness, to the family's eventual deportation. These are great books, especially in this time when empathy for "economic refugees" seems in short supply in our nation's political life.

This is a collection of short stories based on real life. Mr. Jimenez was born in Mexico, and came to California as a young boy with his parents. They were undocumented workers. Eventually he became not only a citizen, but a professor at Santa Clara University in California.These stories, based on his own life, and the lives of his friends and relatives, give an immediate entre into the world of the migrant worker. How hard it was to make a living, how difficult to attend school, to make friends, to become educated. How impossible to keep promises made.This is a collection of compelling stories, that will make you laugh, and make you cry. It tells about the people who pick the lettuce in the salad you just ate, the cotton in that tee-shirt you're wearing, the oranges in your juicer.If you've never thought about who picks those cherries you're eating right now, this book will give you those thoughts. It is a delightful book, filled with love, tenderness, compassion, and passion. This book will introduce you to the people who work the fields, cook our meals, wait our tables, who go unnoticed unless it is politically expedient to see them.O. Henry wrote "Gift of the Magi" which is marvelous; Dr. Jimenez wrote "Christmas Gift" which will be the Star in your night! It is now August, and Christmas is a few days down the calendar, but now is the time to start buying those stocking stuffers, and this is certainly one you want get as many copies as you need for all those stockings you need to stuff!

And they met some bad ghost and she had more trouble to stay healthy because of meeting that ghost. When she was around the ghost, the ghost would spin her around and it caused her to cough. However, towards the end of the book Cat meets nice ghosts and she enjoys it. Some people might think the theme is individual versus culture. This is because in the story there are some people that might think the ghosts are good but she was staying away from them as that's what she believed. However, yin and yang means that with good things come bad things. The reason why I think that is there's more bad and good events then standing up for herself in the book.My reviewI think the book ghost taught you that life can be good and bad. I really think the author put a lot of effort and thought into it because it is detailed and very long, for example Raina Telgemeier renamed a restaurant the name Double Back Burger and there’s a burger place in real life called In & Out Burger. Do you see the resemblance? I enjoyed this book a lot it was really great.

This narrative nonfiction is absolutely wonderful! Jess Keating is extremely talented and makes nonfiction so approachable for younger readers. We loved reading this title during our nonfiction unit in fifth grade and many students chose this text to use as a mentor text for their own writing. The story is filled lots of great information while still telling the story of Eugenie Clark. If you're looking for some great nonfiction for your home or classroom - this is a MUST add. I can't say enough great things about this book or Jess's work - I'm never disappointed! I'm so happy I have a copy in my fifth grade classroom library.

This book is awesome! The illustrations are beautiful and well thought-out and the book is educational and empowering. I bought this for my boyfriend's two-year-old niece, and while the content is probably a little beyond her right now, I love that it tells the story of a young girl growing up to be a scientist. The more young women see themselves represented in STEM careers the better. The book is nice quality as well and will hopefully last a long time.

I don't usually review picture books, but I knew Shark Lady was the perfect book for my family. My oldest son is 7 and mostly reads nonfiction with a heavy emphasis on sharks. His goal is to write a book about sharks and asked for a typewriter last Christmas so that he could start writing his book.This book is everything we were looking for. Eugenie Clark lived such an inspirational life. What she achieved as a female scientist is incredible considering the mindset regarding women in the workplace at the time. My son appreciated this book more for the "shark scientist" angle and the fact that she lived the life he dreams of. I loved this book for the female empowerment. Eugenie Clark knew what she wanted from life and she didn't let the restrictions of society restrict what she wanted to achieve. Shark Lady gave me a glimpse of a woman that I can't wait to know more about. This book is a real gem and I'm glad we found it. We ordered a copy for our bookshelf and can't wait to see it in its final form.I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review, but I loved it so much that I purchased a copy for our bookshelf.

One of the best books for kids we have. Super informative!! My kids love it!! It is a true story told in a language that kids understand. And it introduces them to some grown up concepts - the timeline of facts at the end of the books is something my kids always request to be read. Just awesome!!!

I bought this book for my niece who wants to be an "Under Water Scientist" and loves to read. When I searched and found this book I was thrilled to know it was based on a true story and a pioneering woman and her work nonetheless! She loves the book and was in awe it was a true story. So glad it's out there - also it's beautifully illustrated! Inspiration for the next generation!

The author couldn't decide on her target audience. Loved the idea but even with the wide range of kids I buy books for this didn't fit anyone-parts too detailed for the little ones, parts too childish for the older ones.

My five-year old is in love with this book and now wants to be a marine biologist and study sharks. We have gotten this book twice from the library and renewed it as many times as we could, so we had it for like 4 months. Then I finally figured we better buy her her own copy.

This book is awesome! My toddler boy loves it so much as do I. It's definitely an inspiring story. The illustrations, the way the story is written and the extra facts in the end make this book a must have for any child and a book adults will enjoy as well. I plan on buying more to give as gifts.

These guides are great! The only problem is that the print is small for old folks with failing vision and will need a magnifying glass to see some of it.

We ordered this book to guide us through Rome this fall. It is excellent! In addition to details about where to go and what to see, a map is included to show us where these spots are located. And the pictures are lovely.

HAVE ALWAYS LIKE FODOR'S BOOKS. THIS ONE IS NO EXCEPTION. EXCELLENT REVIEWS OF THE RESTAURANTS. MINOR ISSUE WITH THE WRONG ADDRESS TO A GELATO PLACE. NOT EVEN A TWIG ON THE ROAD. EXCELLENT BOOK. USED IT A LOT.
