And what of that analysis? Bloom has an obvious affinity for Yahweh over Jesus (even though Jesus gets first billing in the bookÂ’s title.) But to ascribe that preference to his Jewish roots is perhaps too easy. A close reading reveals more. Bloom finds that Yahweh, with his covenants, tempers, resolutions, and even occasional forays into the physical where he fights, eats and walks in the cool of the Garden presents a more interesting character than the rather enigmatic Jesus who only comes truly alive for him in MarkÂ’s gospel, and even more so beyond the canonical scriptures in the Gospel of Thomas. And though in sensibility and identification Bloom hews closer to Yahweh, he acknowledges the place Jesus and his followers have made in the world, through an application of his own theory of the anxiety of influence, noting that "The New Testament frequently is a strong misreading of the Hebrew Bible, and certainly it has persuaded multitudes." Prolific literary critic, Yale professor and professional provocateur Bloom (The Book of J) here tackles the characters of the Jewish and Christian gods: what god do we meet in Hebrew Scripture? Who is the Jesus of the New Testament, and does he bear any relation to the Jesus most Americans worship? Does, for that matter, the Hebrew Yahweh resemble the first person of contemporary Christians' Trinity? Bloom, as usual, skewers quite a few sacred cows—for example, he dismisses the quest for the historical Jesus as a waste of time, and says that Jewish-Christian dialogue is a "farce." But in fact Bloom's major points are somewhat commonplace, including his assertion that the Christian reading of Hebrew Scripture laid the groundwork for Christian anti-Semitism. A fair enough charge, but hardly a new one; theologians have observed, and debated, this point for centuries. Bloom's real brilliance lies in his smaller, subtler claims, such as his nuanced discussion of the different ways Matthew, Mark and Luke present Jesus, his assertion that Bible translator William Tyndale anticipated Shakespeare, and his observation that, contra Marx, religion is not the opiate of the people but their "poetry, both bad and good." What an interesting, puzzling book! Even with two years of biblical languages and two years of biblical studies, with auditing classes on the history and philosophy of religion, on philosophy, and on Plato, I still ended up not tracking the author all the way through.That's unusual for me. I feel as if I got anywhere for 35 to 80 percent of what the author alludes to, with many parenthetical excursions, depending on which part of the book I was reading. And he alludes far more than he states. This book is one of the few where I consistently had to go back and reread sentences ... due to Bloom's frequent use of tangential parenthetical phrases.This is part journal, part meta-literature, and part puzzle. Anybody who has read The Book of J will feel both at home and alienated from this tour de force. Bloom assumes the readers' familiarity with themes in his previous works, with Biblical scholarship, with historical criticism, with Shakespeare, Plato, Nietzsche, Kafka, and Freud.And he mostly pulls it off - this book is at least as impactful as Carl Jung's Answer to Job.Bloom missed one theme that naturally follows from the themes he does explore - that of the vulnerability of YHWH. While he doesn't mind looking at YHWH's "capricious" behavior, he doesn't look beyond to the clear vulnerability of YHWH found in the J-source.Nevertheless, this was an incredible and thought provoking book, a masterpiece of theological, philosophical, literary, and personal intrigue, which never truly resolves and leaves the reader puzzling through the enigmas with which Bloom has heroically wrestled.

I really only recommend for those who have found Bloom's previous work rewarding. The book is his rumination on the "characters" of Jesus and Yahweh from a literary, cultural and religious perspective. The main reason for my caveat is that this book seemed sloppily tossed off in stream of consciousness mode. This made it a somewhat exasperating read for me even though I find Bloom to be an insightful thinker.For those that don't know, Bloom is a prominent literary critic with a fairly unique perspective. His initial renown was for his Anxiety of Influence, which outlined his approach to criticism. I particularly enjoyed his take on The Western Canon in a subsequent book. He has expanded his attention to wider cultural and religious criticism in other books, and indeed it rings true that he would have long been ruminating on the relationship between Christianity and Judaism as the ultimate example of the "Anxiety" (fyi, Bloom is writing from a culturally but not particularly religious Jewish point of view). I was interested to find from this book that Bloom finds the Jesus of the Gospel of Mark in particular to be a compellingly "uncanny" character to rival the Yahweh of the "J" thread of what Christians call the "Old Testament".

Harold Bloom, renowned and influential literary critic, has written a very personal exploration and exposition of the conflict in theology between Christianity and Judaism. Without an index or end notes, the work might give the impression of not being scholarly, but Bloom shows on every page that he is steeped in the literature, a life-long passion, and he amply quotes the leading (and some more obscure but pithy) scholars, most of them Christian theologians and biblical students.And of course Bloom is very immersed in the literature that any Bible is and Shakespeare is a frequent visitor in Bloom's pages for comparisons of literary power. This book will likely raise hackles among the more conventionally religious (both Christians and Jews), but it will not be read by any intelligent reader without some gasps and takings away of the breath that, on balance, effectively challenge so much "common wisdom."

This book was IT.It fed my intellect and nourished my mind.Carl Jung is a Father on my intellectual journey. I go back to consult him when I feel pathless. And he never disappoints. He is patient, knowing (real knowing- not a fake), mythical, and scientific.

How could a book by Carl Jung about Carl Jung not be fascinating? But he was hard to follow throughout parts of the book. His mental inner workings go deeper than I've ever read and, as good writing does, left me with a sense of being known on a much deeper level myself. I loved his ability to objectively observe and articulate spirituality but found it a bit dry a couple of times, being that I have a life of experiencing spirituality, as I know everyone does firsthand to at least some degree, is, I wished to read more about this by him. But it was his life's work to do it more analytically. I recommend it for the patient reader with an interest in what I've mentioned as well as good comprehension skills.

I loved this book for the honest way Jung writes about himself. He is refreshingly different from most autobiographies in general and autobiographies of psychologists and psychiatrists in particular. Most personal books I've read by psychologists are full of suspicious anecdotes about how their always brilliant insights saved one patient after another while living an amazingly perfect life of happiness and endless joy.There is none of that in Jung's autobiography. Here is an example of how he viewed his life taken from his summing up at the end of the book:"The older I have become, the less I have understood or had insight into or known about myself. I am astonished, disappointed, pleased with myself. I am distressed, depressed, rapturous. I am all these things at once, and cannot add up the sum. I am incapable of determining ultimate worth or worthlessness; I have no judgment about myself and my life. There is nothing I am quite sure about. I have no definite convictions–not about anything, really. I know only that I was born and exist, and it seems to me that I have been carried along. I exist on the foundation of something I do not know. In spite of all uncertainties, I feel a solidity underlying all existence and a continuity in my mode of being. "

A genius reveals his soul. By far the most important thinker I've read, yet human enough to show his humanity. Never claiming divinity, he brought us close to the spiritual doorways, and his book is the best introduction to the man and his inspired thoughts. I have his full Collected Works, but this book is the starting place. I am reading it for the third time.

I dont have to understand everything in the book to be aware that I was given many great insights. There are lots of things I always wondered about in my own life, and Jung and Jaffe provided many answers to how things fit together. My own myth about God and the unseen realm has been greatly augmented. Please read!

Great book for anyone interested in learning about Carl Jung. Carl was way ahead of his time, extremely intelligent and insightful. I picked up some excellent key points that has helped me see things from a better point of view. I'm barely a casual reader, so this book was a bit difficult for me to read at times. There is a lot of talk and reference to religions and cultures from all over the world which was quite a bit difficult for me to read as I am unfamiliar with most of the reference and wording, thankful for google! Regardless, I enjoyed reading about Carl and his life and felt a benefit from reading this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual autobiography of Carl Jung, one of the truly original thinkers of the twentieth century. Rather than write a conventional autobiography, Jung decided, in this book, to explore how he came to be interested in the workings of the unconscious and the systematic study of its manifestations. He takes us on a journey that begins with his psychological perceptions during childhood, continues with his adult studies and synchronic experiences, and travels onward to his later "near-death experience" (as we might now call it) and his mature views on a various psychic phenomena. For those already interested in Jung or curious about his life, this book would be a fascinating read. It is a text to enjoy with an open mind, despite one's own belief system, in order to experience more fully the possibilities that Jung suggests.I highly recommend this book and have already read parts of it more than once. It is that interesting.

This is a great book for any one interested in psychology and especially those fascinates by Jung and his practice of psychoanalysis. It provides great insight into his mind, his passion for his work, and most of his theories. A wonderful account of his journey as a man and as a scientist that tracks his own development since childhood and relates his curious intuitions to his abstract and often mystical theoretical conclusions.

I applaud Aija Mayrock for bravely sharing her story, and for providing teenagers and younger children with a book filled with helpful ideas for facing the social, emotional and psychological impacts of being bullied.Creatively weaving rap poems throughout her guide, Aija offers tips on not only what to do once you've been bullied, but also how to avoid or at least reduce your chances of being bullied by planning ahead. And the insightful chapter on cyberbullying is a must read section!Additionally, Aija presents specific instruction on how and who to seek for help if you've already been bullied, and maps out prevention guidelines for assessing and identifying situations which may lead to bullying. E.g., she offers advice on how to stay safe in and around school before, during and after the school day as well as what to be aware of /look out for at parties.Students, teachers and school administrators who deal with bullying on the front lines can all glean tremendous value from Aija's book and the narrated version on audible. In fact, consider adding both to the curriculum!

This wonderful book shows Miss Mayrock is mature at a young age, and wise beyond her years. The entire approach is sincere and shows an equally sincere desire to help other bullied kids as well as herself. Despite her former torment, suffering, and isolation she's managed to maintain her hope and a positive, creative attitude that ultimately prevails. I delighted in her rap poems and highlighted passages that gave the book a sense of freshness despite the topic. Her tips are practical that I think young people can relate to and find of benefit. I recommend this uplifting book to anyone who's bullied either at school, their hometown or when on social media. Indeed, the cyberbullying chapter opened my eyes.

The Survival Guide to Bullying is a must read for anyone who is in school, or who has a kid in school. It was written by someone who has actually been in that situation so the insight is first hand. It is very well written, emotional, honest, and unique in that it offers great advice to kids who are dealing with a bully, and kids who are the bully. I would definitely recommend this book for every parent and child, dealing with bullying or not. A great read for people of all ages!

as a person was threathened bullied cyber bullied. I love this little book. it so cute I definetly wish I though idea/ I love this girl she like my new best friend. I definetly couldn't stop reading this I definetly keep it and cherish always if I could write her and tell her how I am now I definetly trying my best.

Reading this as an adult I still found it charming and worth reading. I like some of the definite pros are her focus on staying active, reaching out, and taking the time to address cyber bullying. Most of the advice in the book is very general for teens being bullied but I can see how it would have been helpful during my high school days. I didn't care for some of the style choices of the book but that is totally personal preference. I recommend this to any younger people struggling with self esteem or bullying.

Love this book. My daughter needs to learned to stand up for herself. While reading this book, knowing other kids go through it, made her feel so much better. Love that a young girl wrote it.

My sister loves this book. It has helped her considerably as she was a victim of bullying. She has in fact shared this book with some of her peers.

I teach a lot of teen girls, and this is super helpful for them. It's easy to read, and starts a good open dialogue.

Great for the student who wants to refer to techniques on the go! I kept mine in my backpack on the wards during my third year as a reference for when I wanted to treat patients with techniques for common MSK complaints.

Very well constructed and organized to the approach to treating body segments specifically, easy to read, pictures are very informative. Only negative is the last chapter wasn't bound in my book, instead was loose-leaf and upside down and backwards, but I fixed it manually myself (after about an hour of labor)

This book is simply amazing. It breaks down every region (cervicals, thoracic, lumbar, pelvis, etc) by how to diagnose somatic dysfunction and the most common treatments. Its very easy to read. A great pocket book to have in the office and during rotations. I highly recommend it. This is the BEST omt tretment/techniques book that I've seen.

Wish it was in color. Otherwise not a bad book. Would be great if these were all uploaded to video and subscription to videos came with the book.

This is an excellent book! I've spent the last year or so trying to learn more about the Rendering Pipeline and Shader Programming, but the only information that I could find was kind of piecemeal, outdated and spread out over many, many sources. I was amazed to see that this book collects all of that information into a single place and the author does a great job of explaining otherwise very jargon heavy concepts. If you're looking to get into Shader Programming, this is definitely the best book that I've come across on the subject and it's the most recent book published that I've been able to find as well.

This is a really fun book for any hockey lover! My parents are both hockey nuts and it was super fun sitting down with them to look at this and reading and hearing all the cool stories!
