In the great tradition of Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, this book is a first-person narrative of daunting travel and scientific discovery in the little-known country of Myanmar. Dr. Kress explored many areas in this enigmatic country, surveying its teak forests, bamboo thickets, timber plantations, rivers, and mangroves to document its incredible botanical diversity. Myanmar is one of the great biodiversity "hot spots" in Asia, but because of its social isolation and reputation for political repression it has been closed to--or avoided by--many scientists. Nevertheless, Dr. Kress was determined to search for and record plants that had not been studied since they were first discovered by Western botanists over a century ago. Among the rarities he came upon was a new species of plant called "the weeping goldsmith," a ginger flower whose Burmese name was derived from the legend that the local goldsmiths were reduced to tears because none of their own creations could rival its exquisiteness. Dr. Kress also relates how he came to appreciate the people and culture of Myanmar through an understanding of their flora, natural habitats, and human-dominated environments. Included are fascinating excerpts from his field journals that serve as counterpoints to the accounts of earlier plant explorers. This is not a book to pack in your bag to take on a trip to Myanmar. It's a terrific reference written by someone who loves discovery and is willing to endure hardships to make those discoveries. I dipped into the section on hard-to-reach Chin State after having gone there a month ago. I'm embarrassed to say that I did not appreciate it as much as I should have now that I've read that portion of the book. This book is a work of determination and love. I shall study up before my next adventure to that wonderful emerging country. Excellent book!

You don't have to know a plant from a Plantagenet to fully enjoy this incisive volume by Dr. Kress. The photos (botanical and geographic and cultural) are first class--both current and historic. His text is both journalistic and personal and comfortable. The book is a scholastic achievement and reflects far more research than that required by his botanical presentation.Run, do not walk, to buy this volume. Never mind the price.

Wonderful photos of unique plants with stories of the adventures that led to their scientific documentation. I saw beautiful flowers in Myanmar that were of unknown names and unremarkable to the Burmese guides. On the back cover of this book is a photo that matches one I took in a marketplace. They are called 'The Weeping Goldsmith.'

In a sense, it provides the reader a much stronger sense of visiting and seeing Myanmar than a regular memoir with fewer pictures might. My wife (originally from Myanmar) became nostalgic for her home after flipping through.Of course, the text itself is the star of the book, and here The Weeping Goldsmith also brings Myanmar to life for the reader. Much of the book is about Dr. Kress' adventures in Myanmar (not unlike Dr. Alan Rabinowitz' Life in the Valley of Death: The Fight to Save Tigers in a Land of Guns, Gold, and Greed), although The Weeping Goldsmith also spendsa significant amount of time discussing Myanmar itself. In addition to a brief description of Myanmar history, Dr. Kress also has a chapter that discusses the potential role that Buddhism has played in protecting Myanmar's biodiversity (disclosure: Dr. Kress has cited a paper I wrote on this subject). He also interweaves the history of other botanical explorers, most notably Francis Kingdon-Ward, into his own tale.Some of the anecdotes in the book were quite amusing. Dr. Kress' team found many interesting species of flower in Buddhist shrines, including the Weeping Goldsmith ginger which is common in temples but was previously unknown to Western science. At another point, after spending days looking for a particular hemiorchis, Dr. Kress had to shove his colleague to prevent him from accidentally sitting on the first specimen they had found. Dr. Kress encountered other difficulties in the forests of Myanmar, from bloodsucking leeches to urinating cicadas. However, the saddest and most frustrating problem for his research was the political chicanery of Myanmar's junta, which often denied his team permits to travel to important locales and made his fieldwork generally more complicated.Having been to several of the locations described in The Weeping Goldsmith, I smiled as I recalled how the book really does describe what travel in Myanmar is like. I took the same long ride by elephant to Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park, and my tractor also broke down en route. Dr. Kress perfectly captures the Myanmar that I know and love, making me confident that The Weeping Goldsmith would serve as a great introduction for those readers who have always wanted to visit the Golden Land.

I was attracted to this book by the intriguing title, the beautiful flower photos, and because I'm always interested in accounts of scientific fieldwork -- I'm a field geologist. I was also interested in learning how the author could conduct an ambitious program of botanical research in Myanmar, one of the world's most closed and autocratic countries.Dr. Kress tried his best to steer clear of politics, but local politics wouldn't stay away from him. Nevertheless, he, his Smithsonian colleagues, and many Burmese botanists and foresters were able to research and publish an almost 600-page checklist of the flora of Burma, the first significant new account in 25 years. His research program extended from 1996 to 2003, when it largely ended due to political turmoil there.Dr. Kress is a good writer and a good photographer. This would be essential reading for professional (and aspiring) botanists, and I think many readers interested in botany, flowers and/or Burma would find it a good read. It is very basic and introductory. There are some samples but is not complicates. I read the book in less than 2 hours.It has inspired me to get my mortgage paid off with some really good strategies to do so.

This book tells you to get a HELOC to pay off your mortgage and pay back the HELOC. Pay it back and Do it again, and again and again. don't need to write an entire book to explain this concept

What I like about this book is the straight forward, to the point writing style without all the jargon to fill the pages. The authors get straight to the topic of the book along with explanations and examples to allow the reader to see and gain understanding. I recommend this book to every working class home owner that don't have a clue as to how to cut down their mortgage and/or debt(s) in the quickest possible manner saving much money over time. I rated this book so high due to the visualization and understanding that allows me to see the benefit of these financial strategies. Highly recommended!!!

I like how you followed an example through the whole book. Very good strategies we will be using. When my bank figured the amount I could get a heloc for was different than how you calculated it in the book. Not sure if it was just my bank but, for example 280000 as new appraised amount and they multiplied that by .85 then they subtracted the amount still owed. Thank you for writing this book. In the near future we will be working with provision and their team to set up a wealth strategy and become financially free. Exciting things to come!

An extremely easy read in one sitting. This is because this is a very basic book taking a high level look at high risk alternative methods of paying your house off in an accelerated fashion. The two primary paths offered are using HELOC to jump start your payoff to eliminate your principal home loan, or borrowing from your retirement. The author then uses some examples which are not realistic by most measures. They use for example a household take home income of $10K per month with expenses of $8K with $2k to pay down the loan of $200K on a $300K home. The recommendation is to not pay the house off with $2K per month principle payments in addition to the regular month payment, but to get a HELOC so you will now have 2 lines of debt against your home that you are committed to making payments on. Come up short one month or have an emergency and you are screwed. Further more, if you have a $200K loan at today's rates you have a payment of less than $1K per month, so how the heck does some one have $7K in additional household expenses in their example. A more realistic number would be $3-4K in expenses per month, giving them $3-4K more to pay off their home in 5 years without additional risk incurred. Seriously thinking about returning this book.

This is the best reference book I could find while planning a trip to Cincinnati. It covers a lot.

This is thorough, but without maps and pictures it was exrremely disappointing. It is no Fodor's or Lonely Planet. I cannot recommend.

Had this book while looking for things to do in the Cincinnati region. The book is actually a compiled list of venues that is typically found in tourist offices. The biggest shortcoming of this book is that it lacks a story about the city, its demographic, its life. It was easier to just drive around the city, find a cool looking cafe, stopping in, and finding information on a community bulletin board or from a local weekly community-oriented newspaper, and asking the coffee-goers on the whereabouts of cool things to check out and do.

I learn something new every time I read this book. It encourages me and gently highlights areas where I need to improve. This quote pretty much sums up the book:“Every stage of life has its own temptations and dangers, and Satan will do all he can to exploit them. As we grow older, we may not face the same temptations we did when we were young—but we will still be tempted. And because they may be different from those we experienced before, they can catch us off guard.”

Billy Graham has long been a favorite of my mothers and I enjoyed watching his television programs. This book was that and so much more. He had so much insight and honesty about his walk with God. The part I love about this book is that he breaks it all down in steps to follow. It is a wonderful book and I will refer to it again and again.

This was an easy read and covered everything about life. What we do and what we shouldn't do. It was as if Billy Graham was speaking to me. It answered questions I wanted answered before asking anyone.GREAT BOOK FROM GREAT MAN.

I was looking for a book that would lead me to a closer relationship with my Savior. This is the first book I've read by Mr. Graham. Although a tad simplistic for a more seasoned Christian, there is still much value in his writings. I have highlights on almost every page! Mr. Graham has placed into one book all of the truths it takes to be an effective Believer in Christ Jesus. BUT, not only to believe, but how to believe and WHY. There are Scriptural quotations to 'back up' each truth, which is very refreshing in this era of 'If I say it, it must be true' mentality. A great starter book for the new Christian, and a perfect refresher for others. Come Lord Jesus!

I have read this book twice and hope to do so many more times. It clearly states all the main principles of Christianity, strengthens your faith, and warms your heart. This is the book I chose to give to friends and family. Billy Graham has a way of explaining these principles so beautifully.

What American Christian has not at least heard of Billy Graham? This is the first book of his that I have read, but it looks like I picked a good one! The book touches on many themes I can personally relate to, and I think I can personally relate to them because they are such classical, universal themes in life. The book addresses the question of why bad things happen to people -- even good Christian people. It addresses fear, life setbacks, and living this life the way that God intended for us to. It addresses such powerful themes as divorce and raising children, meaning in life, and joy. In fact, I was impressed too how the book was laid. It had a definite and clear progression, ending in discussions of life's stages and pointing out that Christians have a purpose for being here in this life that goes far beyond just accepting Christ and waiting for heaven. Thanks, Billy Graham!

Bought to read as a book cover to cover and did but it has also become a reference tool to return to over and over. There are tons of Scripture references to lead me to study the Word deeper on any given topic. I love the real life experiences the author shares. I turn 50 this year and this book has helped me put somethings in the past in perspective and have a better understanding of who I am in Christ for the remainder of my journey. I wish I had read it years ago.

I recommend this book to everyone. If you aren't a Christian hopefully it will change you. If you are already a Christian it could change you as well, but more importantly it will strengthen you.Billy Graham has left us a lasting legacy with this book. It would do well for us to read it.

I love having pieces in different styles for my students, and this book is full of fun, accessible, and well-graded pieces in a wide variety of styles. I especially love her rags, because they are excellent precursors to Joplin as far as style and character, but composed with small hands in mind. Unlike other collections, which seem like watered-down or overly-simplified arrangements of more advanced repertoire (also usually full of inaccurate rhythms and unmusical shortcuts), this collection is made up of actual compositions written for pianists at each particular level. They make great recital pieces, and are extremely helpful for teaching rhythms, bass lines (and working on LH technique), and chords. This series complements any method book and is extremely reasonably priced for the amount of music in it.

Really like Martha Mier’s books. Several of the ones in this book are favorites of mine to play and sound great beyond their beginner skill level. I prefer the Jazz/Blues music; not a big fan of ragtime, but I’ve played them anyway. Examples of all can be found on YouTube so always a good place to go to hear how it should sound. I’ve started book 2 and hope to get skilled enough to finish and move to book 3!

I’m a piano teacher and I always use these books as an introduction to jazz. I use these books with every student and every student so far has been amazed with how great it sounds, how confident they feel, and how much they grow when I introduce these books.Each song is two or three pages long, so it doesn’t get too overwhelming for easily-overwhelmed students. A good balance of upbeat rags and slower ballads, my students never get bored and I never get sick of the same old thing over and over.My students enjoy playing these books and I enjoy teaching out of them! Martha Mier does it again. I love everything I’ve purchased by her and my Jazz, Rags, and Blues are by far my favorite.

Martha Mier never disappoints... and this is the first of one of the best series she has ever written. If you have a level 2 student, and you need a student saver song, this book will give you several. These are inevitably the first songs chosen to play at every single concert we have.

I teach piano and these arrangements are so cute and teach syncopation. They are all original. Every song is cute.

My piano students love this book. It is full of cool- sounding upbeat pieces.

This is one of the most concise and accurate books on Italian, German, and French language lyric diction available. It is by far the resource I recommend the most to any singer, pianist, or vocal coach. While it contains all of the basic information found in books like those by Moriarty, Grubb, Odom, and others, it does so in a much more streamlined fashion, designed to take one's understanding of diction as a means of communication to a higher level. It may be about a third of the size of other books, but the amount of language-specific information is quite high, even including specific musical examples. If you were to only own one book on foreign language lyric diction, this would be the one to own.

I have used this textbook with great success teaching diction courses at the University. It is unique in that it is comprehensive, easy to understand, and includes all three of the essential foreign languages necessary for classical singing: Italian, French, and German. Very rationally and expertly structured. Easy and effective for the students.

Fortunately, I have not had to use this book but it seems to be an adequate source of language pronunciation.

I am offering a Lyric Diction Class for my adult - non professional track students. I took a chance on this text - not having used it before. I am so delighted with the detail and organization of this book. It is very easy to use and understand - and still very detailed. I highly recommend it as an excellent resource.

This book is a great learning tool. My voice teacher is using it to teach a small group of us better diction. We are currently only working on Italian but I have already learned so much. Who knew there were so many little rules governing diction?? If you are interested in improving your singing and performing, this book is a must have. It can be a little daunting to get through on your own which is why it is not 5 stars. If you have a teacher that can help you through it you will get much more out of it.

This is an excellent resource that I've used many times in my song study. I recently purchased the updated 2008 edition also by Adams, and it contains much of the same great material. I'd recommend either edition, but the latter does have more current research that makes it a bit more desirable.

I have long used the appreciated David Adams' textbook A HANDBOOK OF DICTION FOR SINGERS. Having seen the 2nd edition that a colleague owned, I decided to purchase it. It is even better than the original. The thing I like about this book is that it is concise, direct, practical, easy to read and comprehend, and is not bogged down in too much academic rhetoric as some other diction texts I have studied. I highly recommend it for singers and teachers.Willie Anthony Waters
