I am just learning about how to conceive and construct children's books. I found this title listed as a textbook reference for a college class, and it is everything I was looking for. It begins by exploring what kinds of stories work for children and how to construct them. My favorite sections are those on illustrating because this is where I need the most help with my projects. The entire process from start to finish is covered in this book, and it will be helpful to anyone thinking about writing a story to those who are well underway in their project. Even those who have published will find value in many sections of this book.

This is a comprehensive history of children's picture books. I was looking for something more specific to illustration techniques in the first half of the 20th century, but this was more generalized.

A bit outdated but interesting none the less.

Nothing like it. Great as a survey, intro, & resource for people interested in learning more about the history, variation, and industry of picture books. Fantastic purchase all around.

I enjoyed this book, especially the artist's sketchbooks. One thing that was annoying was that it focused so much on the people going to that school.

I bought this as a gift for my husband and he loved it. This is not actually a children's book but rather a very interesting book of history of the art illustrations we find in the children's books and which are the most significant part of the books.I love it too.

It's just perfect, it was as expected and as described in the picture. No complains so far. It is great material to begin with.

Of all the books I have found on the subject this has been the most complete, interesting, and helpful. I appreciate the coverage of historical shifts and wonderful visuals.

I have seen multiple Chihuly installations in both museums and gardens; I have fallen in love with his work. While the book dimensions are not that of the typical coffee table art book, the vivid portraits of Chihuly's work more than make up for the size. This book is a joy to own as it brings the magnificence of Chihuly's work into your home at your command. I love my copy so much that I am giving copies to friends as gifts for Christmas. I hope you make it a point to see his work whenever you can even if it is only in this book.

I bought this item expected it to be a picture-a-day calendar, but in fact it’s something much better: a smallish (about 6” x 10”) but thick (about 3” deep!) art book with the titular number of pictures of Chihuly’s beautiful glass in full color. Each picture is backed by a short quote from or about Chihuly. The pictures and quotes together give a good idea of his work and how he developed it and views it. It includes glass installations that are, or were, at a wide variety of museums around the world, for example in Venice and Japan as well as all around the United States. It’s quite a bargain bonanza for any fan of art glass in general or Chihuly’s work in particular.

I saw this book in the Chihuly Museum in Seattle, but didn’t have room to pack this kind of heavy book in my carry on duffle. I winded up buying this book, whilst in the museum. By the time I arrived back to the east coast, my book was waiting for me - and I didn’t have to lug it around my 2 week Pacific Northwest Roadtrip and fly across country with it.

Anyone who has been to a Chihuly exhibit will love this spectacular book, bursting with color and images of various art pieces. My first experience with Chihuly work was an exhibit at Fairchild Gardens in Miami a few years back and I was blown away by the beauty of the spectacle of his pieces mixed with the nature of the gardens. If you ever have an opportunity to view a Chihuly exhibit in a botanical garden don't miss the chance; it will bring much joy. This book was a great way to bring a smile to my face reminiscing about the beauty I beheld in his work. This makes a great coffee table piece and a wonderful gift at a great price!

Bought this after I saw a mega Chihuly exhibit at the Virginia Fine Arts Museum which I enjoyed immensely. The excellent photos in this well priced book transport me back to the wonderful experience I enjoyed viewing this man's work whenever I open it, which is frequently. I also purchased Chihuly in Nature, an inexpensive DVD which contains beautiful floating images of Chihuly's creations in an outside site, mainly the NY Botanical Gardens, which is delightful, as well as Chihuly in the HotShop DVD. Pleased with all...

I gave this book to my 3 year old granddaughter for Christmas. After visiting the Chihuly exhibit several times at our Arboretum, my granddaughter became very interested in the work of Chihuly and sculpture in general. This is a heavy book and I would not recommend it for most children, but my granddaughter loved this book and it was her favorite Christmas gift. Page after page of creativity and color keeps her occupied for hours. The photography is beautiful and every page is a color photograph, it does not contain his recent work, but for a lover of this extraordinary glass artist, this is a wonderful overview.

This is a very nice item to have for your personal library and especially your coffee table. You and your guests will have hours of great perusing and reading... and, for a lack of a better word, amazement at he and his staff's artistry . You'll get a good look into the man's thinking, his inspirations and approaches to their projects throughout the years. And the Pictures... what can I say... they are copious and can be looked at over and over again. They are what is needed on a grey winter's day and always a happy place to be. Get your own copy and see for yourself! It's a treasure.

This was a birthday gift and the person absolutely loved it. She had visited a few of us displays throughout the US and fell in love with is work. This book captures his work well, it feels like you are seeing them in person. Great price.

I’ve heard purists complain that the great Carl Sagan “should stick to his field” of astronomy. I say that’s a narrow and pedantic view — he was a brilliant man who shared his boundless love of EVERYTHING, great and small, in such an engaging way! Generations have learned so much from him — not just scientific fact, but philosophy and humanity and the delight of learning. This book, filled with the mysteries of the human brain, is particularly fascinating! I highly recommend it.

.My favorite books tend to draw the humanities and science into closer alignment and Carl Sagan is the master of that kind of magic."Broca's Brain" is a series of essays that will open your eyes to science as a way of thinking. One of the best things about this book is Sagan's willingness to look at pseudo-science, crackpot ideas that are popular with the general public, and the writings of some truly eccentric people, and carefully explore the research possibilities their beliefs present. This book is fun to read and an educational masterpiece. It would make a nice gift not only for adults but also for teenagers who have inquisitive, scientic minds.Kim Burdick

It was surprising! I don't expect Science to be romantic but I like the way Carl Sagan puts scientific discoveries into non-scientific words so that Science is remarkable - not dull!

I'm a huge Carl Sagan fan. Read cosmos 5 stars, Contact 5 stars and Dragons of Eden 5 stars. So I hoped Broca's Brain would be a good book. It sure was. Excellent. Many topics of science and man's acceptance of science shown. Also publishing non science thought and trying to get it accepted without it passing the rigorous testing and verification needed is shown.Carl Sagan was a world class Astronomer/ scientist who believed in the scientific method of science evaluation. However he wanted conflicting views on established ideas on science brought out to the public but with good research that could be verified. Carl had an open mind and tried not to dismiss different scientific ideas just because they were different than the established thought. He did want sufficient study, evaluating and testing on the new principles before acceptance. Carl says there is no way to show the existence or non existence of God, and does not put religion down. Its basically a matter of faith. The title Brocan's Brain is based on a Frenchman who was the father of brain development and structure as to how the brain worked. Broca examined hundreds of brains. Carl was in France and actually held Broca's preserved brain in his hands at the Musee de Homme. Many aspects of different religions are shown and discussions on the existence or non existence of a God are given. The book gives a fascinating account of older cultures' perceptions of the cosmos. Many of the giants like Aristotle, Galileo and others have their ideas shown. There is a wide showing about many aspects of science both and mythology. Also spiritualism, kooks, and charlatans are shown. The Big Bang, Steady State and Collapsing universe are shown. A lot of time is taken to show the reader the use of Radio Astronomy, the benefits and knowledge obtained using it, as well as possible contacting and receiving messages from an ET source. Fascinating. Eventual contact with ET life both less and more advanced is stressed. It will happen. Many more topics are discussed in the book. Many of the topics could of been really heavy, difficult subjects for the average layman. However the master communicator Carl Sagan is able to write about difficult subjects and thoughts for less educated readers to fully understand. Carl was a master at this.Sadly Carl Sagan passed away in 1996. The world misses a great astronomer, scientist and great man. As an amateur astronomer of 40 years I knew of Carl Sagan but he did not know of me. I considered him a friend. 5 stars... excellent book

Broca's Brain is a little dated but still worthwhile. Sagan's insight and passion for science comes through as always. His view of the quest for knowledge and science as a candle in the dark makes this a must read for the scientist and layman as wellRead this and watch Cosmos, you will not be disappointed.

A great book. Sagan explains science, how it works, what it is and isn't, in a way that is readily understandable to the layman.

This collection of essays and articles by Carl Sagan is simply one of the finest and most lucid books to explain scientific issues. Sagan is unparalleled at making the complicated clear and the obscure obvious, and being entertaining and engaging in the process.

Perhaps my least favourite of all the books that I've read by Sagan, but it still contains enough of his gems to make it worth reading. I thought the last chapter, in particular, was a real marvel of combining science and philosophy. I found myself skipping most of a couple of chapters, though, just because I thought he spent more time on a topic than it was worth.

A real page turner. Having spent most of my life in Utah as a non-Mormon, I understand the culture and why this person got in to this situation. Utah has a reputation for being the fraud capitol of the U.S. because church members don't question authority. If they do, they are excommunicated. This flows into all aspects of their lives. Also, the people here prefer to be entrepreneurs over working for others. Can't wait to see what the Coen brothers do with this story.

I didn't care for the mormon-boasting especially since he seems to be a pretty terrible example of the faith.

What an amazing story.

It's opened my eyes to how the government really is!!!!!

My mother got me this "book" for Christmas. It is worse than the Labrador book she got me for my birthday one year. I'm a grown man, and a couple years ago my mom got me a book with a bunch of pictures of Labrador puppies. I flipped through the pages looking for a 20 dollar bill or something, but nothing. Just puppies. This book is worse than the puppy book. I really don't understand why my Mom got this for me. I kept reading the same way people watch a bad car wreck. I wanted to turn away, but I also wanted to see if this literary gorefest could get any worse. This book is not worth your time. If you are interested in the subject, read the long-form Wired Magazine pieces, which are better written and better researched. This is a self-serving soliloquy from Mr. Green, who presents himself as a saint (quite literally - he occasionally invokes his Mormonism, though his actions indicate he's a pretty bad one). He calls himself an "aging disabled grandfather" when he was in his mid to late 40s when it all happened. He claims that he gained one-hundred fifty pounds over the course of a month or two, which is physically impossible. He's either delusional or a liar. I think it's a bit of both.He tells a tale of woe, in which every terrible thing in his life is bad luck. Dude -- look at the common denominator: it's you. Take some responsibility. Don't spend 70k on computers when you're behind on your mortgage. That's not bad luck, those are bad choices. If your flower shop was doing so well, why'd you sell it? I'm also pretty sure some shady stuff was going down. Who wears tens of thousands of dollars in a belt around their waist? Who "forgets" that they have a few handguns in a safe in the bedroom when asked by law enforcement? Mr. Green's story doesn't add up.On a technical level, it appears that this is self-published and not professionally edited, which is very evident. There are numerous factual errors and internal inconsistencies. For example, early in the book, he says that the Lagoon theme park is located to the south of Salt Lake City. It's actually located to the north. He says that light rail crisscrosses most of Utah. That's not true - it serves the small part along the Wasatch Front. These are minor criticisms, but show that the book was not carefully edited or fact checked. The spelling of his wife's name is sometimes Tanya and sometimes Tonya. Sometimes he refers to his first lawyer as a woman and sometimes as a man, often on the same page. There are myriad other odd and consistency and grammar errors throughout. The worst part is the italicized language at the beginning of each chapter. They are blurbs that appear to be written by a 15 year old trying to be "deep."Thanks, Mom for the gift. I've decided to send this as a gag gift to my brothers with a warm recommendation, rather than donate it to Goodwill or use for fire kindling. I made a huge mistake in spending the few hours it took me to get through this monstrosity. I wouldn't want anyone else to make the same mistake unless as part of a joke.

This book is awful. The author is either extremely narcissistic or this entire book is him trying to convince you that he is a good guy. Either way he is extremely unlikable. If you liked american kingpin, this book is nothing like it. Save yourself the time and money on this boring self absorbed trash. I used to feel somewhat bad for Curtis after what the cops did to him. Now I wonder if he deserved it....

#135,929 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

My life was personally affected by Adolf Hitler, so I've always had a curiosity about him, the Nazis, World War II in general, because I was always looking for clues to my father's personality and how his war experiences had caused him to be the kind of father he was to me. Consequently, I've read quite a lot of books about Hitler and World War II.When I first saw the cover of A.G. Mogan's historical novel about Hitler, I thought it was another biography or historical book about that time period. When I found out it was 'only' a novel I was tempted to be disappointed at first. However, I was intrigued by the pre-publicity on Facebook that the author was doing and requested a review copy; with the thought that if it was total crap I could justifiably debunk it with my extensive knowledge about Hitler, and if it was any good that, at least, I'd scored a free copy of a good book.Despite the odd initial misgiving over certain English turns of phrase (and it must have been weird for the author who, I believe, is German, writing in her second language of English about a guy who would have been speaking German in the first place), the dialogue is created with an internal consistency that allows you to concentrate more on what's happening and accept these versions of the historical characters in the context of this novel. It's the same way that you accept movie versions of World War II German speaking English with German accents, even though it's utterly ridiculous. Once you suspend your critical factor in that area, you can begin to enjoy the good things about the story and plot.I very quickly slipped into enjoying the author's portrayal of historical events from the angle of the protagonists; a refreshing viewpoint that could only be represented by a novel; unless real journals of Hitler and his henchmen are one day discovered. Goebbels did leave diaries and others left writings but without Hitler's viewpoint, only a novel could explore this very internal view of Hitler and his Nazis. Because of my extensive readings over 40 years within the first few paragraphs I recognised that the author has an uncommon grip of facts which could only be gleaned from extensive research, small details inserted subtly that gives a dialogue between the protagonists are very believable feel, especially to those with a particular interest in this period of history. An early scene where Hitler as a child accidentally witnesses the rape and humiliation of his pregnant mother by his brutish father, Alois, is particularly graphic and realistically reimagined by the author. The fear of many will be that by portraying Hitler's childhood trauma sympathetically that the author is intentionally or unintentionally creating sympathy for a devil. However, though I'm only halfway through the book, my impression is the opposite; that the author is showing how devils are made in that if we want to see another devil coming, or even turn aside such a person from becoming another Hitler or demi-Hitler, we need to understand both the person and the circumstances that contribute to this person becoming what they become.I don't know how such an author as A.G. Mogan has such a sophisticated grasp of events that happened decades before her birth, except that it must've involved a natural gift of perception combined with the study of psychology and extensive historical research. Although I believe the author claims such on the advertising blurb for the book, I only believe it because I'm seeing it reflected in the depth of the writing.I'm only halfway through this book, as I say, but I'm already impressed enough to recommend it highly to anyone as an interest in Hitler, the Nazis, World War II, the psychology of sociopaths and how they may impact the world if we don't recognise them in time. Depending on the rest of the book I may come back and amend this review if it fails to keep up the high standard to the end. However, even if I were to remove one star, I'm sufficiently impressed with A.G. Mogan's, 'The Secret Journals of Adolf Hitler: Volume 1' to say that anyone in the author's target audience will surely find this novel an informative, entertaining, possibly disturbing, but ultimately rewarding read.

I’m not sure what possessed me to read a 300+ page book on Hitler, but I’m so glad I did! This book was so well written and well researched! A.G. Mogan has done an amazing job of getting into Hitler’s head and telling his story as if he’d dictated this memoir of his early years from childhood through shortly after World War I. I wasn’t sure what to expect, or if I’d like it at all as I’m certainly not a Hitler fan, but I was totally drawn in. I even had to pause in my reading to look up the work of artist Franz von Stuck as he was referred to within the book.I’m looking forward now to reading the next release in this series. I can hardly believe I’m writing that, but I want to read how this all plays out in his mind.A.G. Mogan did a phenomenal job presenting an objective “journal” of Hitler’s life. She neither justified his actions and beliefs, nor glorified them. This was more a way of understanding them. If you are a history buff, or are simply curious as to what factors may have contributed to the psyche of Hitler, I highly recommend this book!

I’ve always had a fascination with the life of the man who set the world on fire and nearly destroyed it with his German War Machine. The secret journals of A.G. Mogan is a gripping story of one of the most influential persons to exist in the past century: Adolf Hitler. No matter what history has told us of this man, the truth in this book speaks for itself, as the author takes us on a long, dark, fascinating journey into what could only be coined a journey “through the hell of a mad mind.” Hitler was both genius and chaotic, rising to a level of power that set the world on fire. The author has done a tremendous job at bringing the facts to life and separating rumor from the truth. We are taken into the earlier days of Hitler and the violence that he was introduced to that may have forged his character to become who it was.In a tale that is both frightening and fascinating, I found myself drifting back through the details to read again. The author has a prolific writing style that needs to be watched as she has a gift for describing scenes that were quite difficult to read through. That is the sign that you are reading a good book. The Secret Journals of Adolf Hitler will put you on the edge until you have turned the last page. It becomes a struggle to stop turning pages as the brilliant characters the author has created bring this book to life and drive it home with serious intensity. This is a definite recommended read if you want a deeper look into Hitler and the mind of the man that changed history forever.

Winner of the 2019 ALA/YALSA Alex AwardA Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2018A Glamour Best Book of 2018A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2018A Real Simple Best Book of 2018“Sharp, moving... Wamariya and her co-author, Elizabeth Weil... describe Wamariya’s idyllic early childhood in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, and the madness that followed with an analytic eye and, at times, a lyrical honesty.... Wamariya is piercing about her alienation in America and her effort to combat the perception that she is an exotic figure, to be pitied or dismissed.... Wamariya tells her own story with feeling, in vivid prose. She has remade herself, as she explains was necessary to do, on her own terms.” —Alexis Okeowo, New York Times Book Review"Like Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone, on being a boy soldier in Sierra Leone, or Joseph Kim’s Under the Same Sky, on escaping North Korea, The Girl Who Smiled Beads is at once terrifying and life-affirming. And like those memoirs, it painstakingly describes the human cost of war."—Washington Post“Remarkable... Wamariya and the journalist Elizabeth Weil set out to sabotage facile uplift.... The fractured form of her own narrative—deftling toggling between her African and American odysseys—gives troubled memory its dark due.”—Ann Hulbert, The Atlantic"Wamariya’s memoir proves how the human spirit can triumph. It truly floored me."—Elisabeth Egan, Glamour"Unforgettable."—People"Gripping.... It is our human tragedy that there will always be war, and that there will always be displaced people. Memoirs that show exactly what that means, exactly what the toll is, are vital."—The Minneapolis Star Tribune“Wamariya (along with Outside contributor Elizabeth Weil) tells... her story—which, yes, is often extremely tough—with brilliance.” —Outside“Heartbreaking and honest, this important memoir explores the lasting effects that trauma and destruction have on an individual and emphasizes the human ability to overcome it all and build a new future—even when that new life comes with horrors of its own.” —Real Simple“In the aftermath of the Holocaust, witnesses and survivors shared reflections that changed our moral understanding of good and evil and all that lies between. In The Girl Who Smiled Beads, Clemantine Wamariya has written a defining, luminescent memoir that shines a sharp light on the dark forces that roil our age. If you read this book—and once you read the first page, you will not put it down—you will never think about political violence, displacement, or the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship the same way again. Wamariya tells the story of her discombobulating resettlement in the United States as a teenager, following her harrowing experiences in the Rwandan genocide and as a refugee roaming the African continent in search of a home. Wamariya is unsparing in her criticisms of Western indifference and moral presumptuousness, and she subjects her own judgments and values to the same withering scrutiny, revealing a young woman that figures out how to survive but struggles to learn how to live. Her gripping and brutally honest reflections inspire us to count our blessings and summon us to follow her fierce and unrelenting example to try to help build the world we wish to see.” —Samantha Power, author of "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide; Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School“This book is not a conventional story about war and its aftermath; it’s a powerful coming-of-age story in which a girl explores her identity in the wake of a brutal war that destroyed her family and home. Wamariya is an exceptional narrator and her story is unforgettable.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“At once heart-breaking and hopeful, [Wamariya's] story is about power and helplessness, loneliness and identity, and the strange juxtaposition of poverty and privilege.... This beautifully written and touching account goes beyond the horror of war to recall the lived experience of a child trying to make sense of violence and strife. Intimate and lyrical, the narrative flows from Wamariya’s early experience to her life in the United States with equal grace. A must-read.” —Library Journal (starred review)"In this eloquent and engaging memoir, Clemantine Wamariya recalls a childhood spent as a refugee on the run from war, violence, and terror, and a womanhood shaped by those experiences. Affecting and utterly eye-opening, The Girl Who Smiled Beads is a powerful reminder of just how strong and indomitable the human spirit can be."—Bustle“Riveting... [A] poetically written, searchingly honest memoir.”—National Catholic Reporter"Lyrical and hauntingly beautiful. The Girl Who Smiled Beads will inspire you."—Chanrithy Him, author of When Broken Glass Floats“A powerful record of the refugee experience... [with] moments of potent self-reckoning.”—Kirkus Reviews“In her prose as in her life, Wamariya is brave, intelligent, and generous. Sliding easily between past and present, this memoir is a soulful, searing story about how families survive.” —Booklist

The Girl who Smiled Beads opened up with the story about when the author was reunited with her family (who she had not seen in 12 years) on Oprah. Immediately, I watched the clip of her and her family reuniting and I bawled. It is so heartwarming. It is both happy and sad at the same time, and I was incredibly excited to read the rest of the Girl Who Smiled Beads and hear about Clemantine's Cinderella type story. But the girl who smiled beads was so impactful and moving because it didn't tell a Cinderella story - it was real and raw and shared that even after Clemantine arrived in the US, it wasn't like her arrival undid the trauma she endured during her childhood escaping the Rwandan genocide. Oftentimes I feel like books carrying such an important, raw and poignant message can be overly dense and boring. But this was anything but that - it was the perfect length and a quick read. I finished it in a day and a half, and was only reading when I had time.I would definitely recommend this book - it's so important in today's climate.

Hardly a day goes by without some "human interest" story in the news about those impacted by wars and possible genocide. Most moving in these stories are the pictures of children injured, outside ruined homes, on crowded boats fleeing to hoped for safety. But then, the news moves on, and we never really see what happens to these families after the cameras move on.The Girl Who Smiled Beads is written by one of those children. Clemantine Wamariya was a pre-schooler when the genocide in Rwanda began. Separated early from her parents and some siblings, she and her teen-aged sister--and soon, that sister's own infants--began a years long trek up and down the African continent away from death and in search of safety. Ultimately, they reached the US. A loving family took Clementine under their wings, and she received an education at the best of suburban schools outside Chicago. While in high school, an essay she wrote comparing her experiences to some of the narrative in Elie Wiesel's Night won her a spot on the Oprah television show. So moved by the story, Oprah's company arranged to have Clementine's parents and siblings flown to New York for a surprise reunion. This is the Cinderella part of her story, but The Girl Who Smiled Beads provides a far deeper and moving picture of her full experience. There are flashbacks to her life struggling just to find a little clean water for her infant nephew. There is the separate experience of her sister whose life turned out much differently and yet who had grit and persistence few of us would ever be able to generate going through domestic abuse in addition to the life on the run of a refugee. There are honest ruminations of trying to reconcile her life as a suburban teen ager with accepting the now somewhat foreign ways of her more traditional Rwandan parents.Wamariya openly shares her emotional journey, as she struggles with something like survivor guilt in her years at an exclusive prep school and ultimately Yale, but she also continues to express deep and abiding love for her family, especially that older sister whose strength carried them through the very difficult refugee years. This is a must-read story for anyone concerned with how the great upheavals of our time are impacting the lives of millions every day. There are times when the story becomes a bit hard to follow, as the author combines narrative of her life in the US with returns to the African journey. However, that may be an asset for us as readers, as it gives perhaps a clearer picture of how someone whose life has been so greatly bifurcated into "before" and "after" might live day to day.I cannot recommend this enough for all to read and remember every time we see disparaging stories about "refugees" and "immigrants." One can hope that this story might stir more people to begin providing the "kindness of strangers" to others in situations similar to that of all the Wamariyas.

What a book about humanity and inhumanity. This book left me sad, but glad that maybe Clementine was able to understand that young child within herself that was not recognized by the world. The most profound line in the book to me was about the word “genocide” in Rwanda and how people and journalists tied up all those atrocities in one word, and went on their way. When are we going to learn from past mistakes, that no one, no one is better than another. I hope Clementine has made a little peace wth her past. Pass this book on so others read her story.

What a brave story to write. The telling of this tale was raw and honest, Clemantine’s frustration and anger exposing how little the public understands or can help those who have suffered genocide and were forced to flee their home countries. The loss of country, family and even belongings (like the precious ceramic mug she is forced to leave behind) she and her sister face is the backdrop to the heroics and ingenuity of an older sister dragging her little sister all across Africa and finally to the US to escape the atrocities of war in Rwanda. The relationship between siblings, parents and foster parents evolves into a heart-wrenching story while we cheer for the twist of fate that changed Clemantine's life and allows her to bring her story to light. The writing is clear and concise, swiftly moving the story along while building tension in the young protagonist as she tries to understand war and displacement through a child’s eyes. The characters are well-developed and relatable, both the relatives, loving as well as impartial, and the other refugees who helped bolster Clemantine’s spirit along the way.Clementine’s anger and cynicism comes through strongly and often as she continually pushes others away, feeling they can’t understand her struggle to process the hunger, imprisonment, abuse and inhuman cruelty she has experienced. This hardness and stubbornness carries over into the later stages of her life when we, the readers, are rooting for her to heal and find peace and are not rewarded. While this theme may have been too redundant and off-putting in a fictional work, this is the reality for Clemantine and thus the reader must accept it, uncomfortable or not. And maybe that was her intention all along.

Well I was in Rwanda in 1975 and returned in 2017. I visited the genocide museum as well as the hotel milles collines. I had just seen Clementine at a book reading also.i found the book very well written & poignant for the experience she endured with her sister. She provides great insight into the refugee experience. A real first hand account thru the eyes of a 6 year old girl. I do believe she suffers from ptsd. I think her age was what made this so difficult, whereas her sister had more of a skill set to cope with the quickly changing events. Well worth reading..
