After reading Rachel Cruze’s new book, Love Your Life, Not Theirs, I am completely ready to fall in love with my life all over again! This book was just the motivation I needed to hear as we continue to push through our own journey to debt-free living. It reminded me to focus on building up my own life and values, and not to gaze on what someone else appears to have. Many of the main money principles in the book are the same as those founded by her father, but Rachel aims them at values and situations present in today’s culture. She addresses some of the major issues that social media has on our mindset and challenges us to do things differently. I felt myself making changes in my usual social media routine and in other areas of my life immediately after reading this book. I am so thankful to Rachel and her ministry for what my future brings by making these small changes now!The book truly reads like a conversation you would have with a close friend. I almost felt like I was talking directly with Rachel as she poured out her humor to keep the mood light and I loved her anecdotes from her own life sprinkled throughout the book. She writes like a friend who is not afraid to show you some tough love and tell you the truth when you need to hear it. Rachel is also vulnerable with her own struggles and weaknesses when it comes to money. There were definitely moments I felt some convictions with my struggles, but I felt encouraged to do better and keep trying to build the life I want to live now and in the future. The principles are easy to incorporate in your life and Rachel explains them all so well! I can’t wait to share the principles I have learned with my friends and family to help them live the lives they love as well!Note: I received this book as part of a pre-launch book club.

The fear of missing out (or FOMO) is what keeps people my age flicking furiously through our social media news feeds. We see friends posing in front of sparkling new SUVs, wearing Mouse ears in front of the castle with their kids, and dipping their toes in the sand on the beach. Then we go out and spend ourselves into oblivion just trying to feel adequate to our frenemies. What if there was more to life? What about instead of focusing on what we can get/buy/take, we focused on what we can build and give? That’s the premise of 'Love Your Life, Not Theirs.' As Rachel puts it in Chapter 14, “The endgame…is not to buy so much stuff for ourselves that it fills up our garages and rented storage units. The real goal of building wealth is to leave a measurable and meaningful mark on the people around you.”Rachel’s conversational tone makes it a pleasant read. I laughed at her $20 bowl of guacamole, and identified with her plea to parents not to use money to show our children love. She talks about real relationship issues (e.g. competitive spending: it’s a real thing!), parenting, investing, and easing into giving. The book lacks the judgmental tone of many financial books written by older authors, or those that only focus on numbers. This quick read would make a great gift for the Millennial in your life to introduce them to sound financial habits, especially if they are a recent graduate (HS or college), newlywed, or new parent. (I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.)

This is a very easy to read book, but I was a bit disappointed in the makeup. I have not read any other Rachel Cruz or Dave Ramsey books but I am familiar with the baby steps they preach. This book was a regurgitation of those steps with a little story telling in between. I enjoyed the personal stories about Rachel and her husband, but I really didn't learn much more financially than I already knew going in.

I am a big Dave Ramsey ,so if you listen to his show and purchased any of his books there is nothing new in this book.If you have never read any of Dave Ramsey"s books then I recommend this book.

Disappointing...was pretty much just a reiteration of all she learned from her father. I would suggest reading "Total Money Makeover" instead, as it is more thorough and contains many examples.

This book has a lot of practical applications. The book was an easy read. I had a lot of meditative moments. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to live a better life and not compare yours to someone else's. It was like she was reading my life story to me. I had a lot of aha moments. Once I started reading I couldn't find it it down or when I had to I couldn't wait to begin again. It was very inspirational! I will put this book on my repeat read again to keep me focused on the big picture and not to give up this journey! I put social media down so that I wouldn't feel the need to do things due to what others were doing or fueling bad behaviors because of this book as that is what I found myself doing. I'm glad I listened to her dad's show and he mentioned this book!

Let me preface this by saying I'm a huge Dave Ramsey fan. Rachel's book has been heavily advertised on Dave's show and I've been looking forward to reading it for months. I thought Rachel's book would address how to remain content with your life when everyone else's life is constantly paraded on social media. How does one remain jealousy free? How do I stay content to live in a smaller home, take frugal vacations while watching others take extravagant ones, and buy secondhand clothes while watching friends buy designer? However, her book didn't address contentment at all. She regurgitated the baby steps from Dave's teachings and told the same stories we've heard for years. Although she tried to be relatable, since she has never been in debt or owned a credit card, her references fell flat. If you're new to Dave Ramsey, skip this book and read The Total Money Makeover.

I have been listening to the Audible version. Really did not care for Rachel's voice in the beginning but have gotten used to it because I love the principles she has. Piggybacking off her dad Dave Ramsey, I like her idea of the clip instead of money envelopes. This works better for us ladies whose bags are already full of too much stuff! This is a great book to help you stop living others lives and going into debt with them and focusing on your own goals.

Review

“Masterful. . . . Eloquent, important, and accessible. . . . The book of the century about the death penalty.”  —Andrew Cohen, The Atlantic “Mesmerizing. . . . Powerful. . . . An utterly engrossing true-crime tale.” —Kevin Boyle, The New York Times Book Review “A genuine whodunit, a page-turner, and a tale of redemption. And it’s all true. For all that, however, Anatomy of Injustice is also a blistering indictment of the death penalty. . . . Bonner delivers a crackerjack feat of storytelling that steadily administers the truth about capital punishment like a slow, toxic IV drip. . . . In his expert hands, the twists and turns of Elmore’s appeals, and the gradual discovery of the travesties in the original investigation and trial by Holt’s team, make for excruciatingly suspenseful reading.” —Laura Miller, Salon.com “Gripping and enraging. . . . Bonner’s book is not a treatise against the death penalty. Rather, it is a look at what happens in America’s justice system when justice is absent.” —The Economist “Accomplished and meticulously researched. . . . Convincing . . . As a piece of reporting, the book is masterful. Bonner builds the story, and his argument, carefully, rarely editorializing, mixing in a précis of capital punishment in the United States. . . . Bonner’s book is an important addition to the body of evidence against the death penalty.” —Ethan Gilsdorf, The Boston Globe “A revealing look at how police and courts grapple with death penalty cases. . . . If you are a staunch advocate of the death penalty . . . you’re precisely the person who should read Anatomy of Injustice.” —Nicholas Varchaver, Fortune “The investigation . . . makes for a gripping read, and exposes some outrageous failures of American justice.” —“The Must List,” Entertainment Weekly “Compelling. . . . Bonner makes us feel the frustration and inhumanity of a justice system gone awry.” —Wilbert Rideau, Financial Times “Fascinating. . . . Anatomy of Injustice moves as swiftly as a great courtroom thriller, and Bonner’s astutely observed characters are as memorable as any you’re likely to encounter in a John Grisham-penned best seller.” —Doug Childers, The Richmond Times-Dispatch “One of the best books written about a dubious conviction. . . . Bonner’s volume is special for the way it entwines the lives of the principal characters with the nation’s inglorious history of racial discrimination and capital punishment.” —Rob Warden, Chicago Tribune “Gripping, suspenseful, and electrifying. . . . This should be required reading for anyone who believes in justice.” —John J. Kelly, Cincinnati CityBeat “A gifted storyteller, Bonner’s prose is at once stately and matter-of-fact. . . . In the context of true crime, of murder stories most especially, [Bonner’s details] assume a captivating glow. . . . As a portrait of contemporary American life, immersed in culture wars and classism, and clogged with the residues of racism, Anatomy of Injustice is authoritative and fascinating. As a study in how things can go from bad to worse, how entire lives can be crushed under the wheels of the justice system, it’s also urgent and necessary.”  —José Teodoro, The Edmonton Journal “A lucid, page-turning account. . . . Elmore’s defense winds through nearly three decades of legal maneuverings as suspenseful as the investigation of the mysterious crime itself. Painstakingly researched by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bonner, the case illustrates in fascinating and wrenching specificity the widely acknowledged inequality and moral failings of the death penalty, while illuminating the less understood details of a criminal justice system deeply compromised by race and class. Indeed, Bonner’s ability to succinctly and vividly incorporate the relevant case history and explain the operative legal procedures and principles at work—including the bizarre way in which court-acknowledged innocence is not necessarily enough to spare a life on death row—makes this not only a gripping human story but a first-rate introduction to the more problematic aspects of American criminal law.” —Starred review, Publishers Weekly “Fascinating. . . . Dexterous. . . . Well-researched. . . . Bonner’s description of decades of bungling is a reminder of the ways class and race can shape outcomes in the American legal system.” —Margaret Quamme, The Columbus Dispatch “Far-ranging in its implications, thoughtful, and utterly absorbing, this book is a fine example of involving narrative nonfiction.” —Booklist “Sharp. . . . A powerfully intimate look at how the justice system works—or doesn’t work—in capital cases.” —Kirkus “Those interested in human rights, issues of race, and inner workings of the U.S. legal system—not to mention true crime fans—will want to read this book.”  —Library Journal “Bonner’s gripping true-crime thriller shines a shocking light on American justice. I couldn’t put it down.” —Jane Mayer, author of The Dark Side “Race, sex, and murder in a Southern town are the explosive core of Raymond Bonner’s legal drama. Anatomy of Injustice is also a brave dispatch from the trenches of a forgotten war over capital punishment. Told with a reporter’s tenacity, a lawyer’s acumen, and an advocate’s zeal, this book is both a gripping narrative and a chilling indictment of America’s justice system.” —Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic “Anatomy of Injustice demonstrates dramatically and shockingly what bad lawyers are capable of doing, and is an inspiring example of what a good one can do. For that alone, law schools should assign it to every entering student.”  —Stephen Engelberg, managing editor, ProPublica “Raymond Bonner uses his skill as a lawyer and journalist to take us on a fascinating journey deep into the heart of the criminal justice system, where the stakes could not be higher or the failures more disturbing. Anatomy of Injustice reads like a novel, but it is, tragically, all too true.”  —Linda Greenhouse, author of Becoming Justice Blackmun “Most of us Americans don't have a clue about how the criminal court system really operates and we need a good writer like Bonner to take us through, step by step. But be warned: If you have pressing duties waiting, don't begin reading this book. This is seductive storytelling at its best.”  —Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking “Reading Raymond Bonner’s compelling account of a grossly botched murder case, I was overcome by outrage at the state of our criminal justice system. Rigorously researched and powerfully told, Anatomy of Injustice could—and should—change the national debate on the death penalty.”  —Michael Massing "Raymond Bonner's Anatomy of Injustice is a powerful and poignant analysis of the case of Edward Lee Elmore. Bonner's voice is a profound force for truth and justice in our difficult times!" —Cornel West

Do not read this book unless you are prepared to have your views on the death penalty and our American justice system challenged. This is a powerful story of a South Carolina murder trial where planted evidence and perjury were used to convict and sentence to death a mentally retarded African American man; it's the story of inept defense lawyers and a politically driven "justice" system which rewards winning over fairness and truth - even when a man's life is at stake. This journey through our court system is engaging, thought-provoking, and often disturbing. When I started reading this book, I did so because of a general interest in true crime and our court system. At page one, my belief was that while the death penalty is often applied unjustly and capriciously in some states, it is appropriate for our more heinous criminals. As the author states, there are certain "horrific crimes" which "swell the ranks of capital punishment advocates and makes it hard for death penalty agnostics not to become believers." I didn't expect to be swayed from this belief. I was wrong. In particular, I was shocked to learn how difficult it is to be granted a re-trial after one is convicted, fairly or not, of a crime - even if that conviction results in a death sentence. As the author bluntly states, "Innocence alone does not entitle a defendant to a new trial." He quotes Herrera v. Collins: "Due process does not require that every conceivable step be taken, at whatever cost, to eliminate the possibility of convicting an innocent person. To conclude otherwise would all but paralyze our system for enforcement of the criminal law." The author summarizes this by saying, "the need for finality in legal proceedings sometimes trumps what might be seen as fundamental fairness." The Supreme Court further states that once a defendant has had a fair trial, "the presumption of innocence disappears." In dissent, Justice Blackmun stated, "I believe it contrary to any standard of decency to execute someone who is actually innocent. The execution of a person who can show that he is innocent comes perilously close to simple murder." It's too bad that his was a minority opinion."Anatomy of Injustice" is as captivating as any thriller; the characters in this tale are intriguing and the plot chillingly unbelievable for a work of non-fiction."If there is a flaw in the adversarial system of justice that has developed in America, it is that the adversarial nature of it outweighs justice."Highly recommended.

A well-written book. A bit long, but the complex ins-and-outs of the justice system, whereby a man could be on death row for 25 years (wrongfully) is not a quick and easy tale to tell. (I recommend that you read this book with a 3x5 card in hand to jot down the names and IDs of the various players in the "story", to make it easier for you to refer back to, as you read. I didn't do this, but I wish I had.) Our justice system is clearly very flawed, and the reader wants to interject shouts into the proceedings: Why don't you ask "this"? What about "that"?The deck was clearly stacked against Edward Elmore, a poor southern uneducated black man. The South Carolina justice system is definitely not favorable to obtaining "justice" as we normally think of justice. A rush to judgement attitude prevailed within the police investigation and then in the prosecutors' office. The State clearly just wanted to clear its books on the crime. We read about these situations in the news periodically. But, it only becomes obvious when someone collects all the data over time and compiles it into a narrative book like this that we see the true nature of our justice system. We can only hope that this is an exception and not the rule. It definitely gives one pause in thinking about the death penalty -- if only because our system is not set up to be flawless. If this example is assumed to be typical, then Houston, we have a problem. The book does not delve into the larger matter to weigh how big a problem this is in our justice system. This is a snapshot of one case. Not even a high-profile case. So, even if the reader supports the death penalty for the "truly evil", the flaws inherent in the justice system and the uneven application of the death penalty argue against having it available as an option. Much background information is also presented about the death penalty and the justice system in general. But, it truly would be an interesting study to see just how many cases of wrongful conviction and suspected wrongful conviction there are in this country. We need to improve some very basics in our justice system -- even if we're not talking about the death penalty. This book is a good intro to the flaws that we can surmise are rampant in the administration of American justice. Perhaps someone would argue that this was just a fluke. But, the repetition of the same legal issues over 25 years argues that this case is not a fluke. It represents the system.

I read a lot about the injustices of our "justice" system, so I did not expect to be all that surprised by the details in this book. I was, in fact, shocked. The enormity of corruption and prejudice, from the police to the lawyers (both prosecution and so-called defense) and right to the judge, is just appalling. While the initial trial was a farce, what really struck me hard were the hurdles and blockades involved in obtaining a new, fair trial. Once a person has been convicted, the system wants to keep its hold. Despite obvious corruption, suppressed evidence, perjury, and more, our justice system was intent on killing a poor, mentally retarded, innocent black man. This is not justice. This is state-sanctioned murder. The research here is impeccable, and Raymond Bonner lays out the facts in a compelling manner. This book is easy to read, as far as writing style. But the content will - and should - leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the way our legal system works.

Another winner. This book is fascinating on so many levels. Based on actual people, the book tells the story of early Florida. The main character carries a tragic secret that defines her life. Not sure if she ever really faced it???? But that is the fascination - besides the excellent historical information. The novel includes: faith, teaching, betrayal, death, Indian affairs, evil, unique marriages, hurricanes, and more. Highly recommended!!! This book deserves an A++++++++

Outstanding!!!! I've given this as gifts to three friends. If you love Florida history this will capture your heart. I visited the Stranahan House after I read the book. I just loved it , one of my favorites and a beautiful love story too.

One of the top five books I have ever read. And I have read A LOT OF books! Absolutely astounding and accurate description of old south Florida. So true to life I had trouble distinguishing between the two! Fabulous read and even better style!

very satisfied

I love the history and story of lives blended in such a natural way. I'm thankful for the Seminole Nation who carry on the heritage of blending without bending.

Love the historical facts, but she "over wrote" so much that it seems to drag and drag...it did not flow.

Reading all of her books

Jane Kirpatrick is a good author.

When you sit back and ponder on your own relationship because this book was just that deep !!!! You will look at all relationships in a completely different light when it comes to loyalty and commitment. These women have no bounds when it comes to taking what they want and don't mind who it belongs to. They only want funding and someone else to foot the bill. There are so many women who think that they have the perfect relationship and that they don't have to worry about their significant other drifting off to someone else. When in reality it has nothing to do with boredom, a lot of it has to do with seeing if they still " got it ".I am so looking forward to reading the next part to this and seeing where these crazy characters end up. And as far as Quan, honey how you gone put someone on game when you running game yourself ? What's really going on ?

Wow. I literally read all three of the books in this series in one night. As soon as I finished the first one, I needed the second one, and as soon as I read the second one, I had to purchase the third. None of the books disappointed. These two authors are surely a “Dynamic Duo”. I would DEFINITELY read another book or series by them. The story was crafted so perfectly, with each character being multidimensional, a perfect combination between clear fiction and reality… I could go on and on, but for anyone looking for a well written story, which is unfortunately rare in many subgenres these days, GO FOR THESE BOOKS. I look forward to any further collaborations or individual works by these authors.

Not one likeable character in this book. Grammar is a mess throughout. Akin to most urban novels, consequences to bad actions just don't exist.Messing up common phrases like "sigh of release" instead of relief.

If I could write omg over and over as a review I would lol. This book was definitely a page turner. Nova's antics shocked me! Tyriq ain't s***! And that ending with Skye.....babyyyyyy I can't wait to read part 2. This is the type of book that will have you questioning the most faithful man and looking at him sideways.

I thought the story was a bit of a bore--don't get me wrong it had potential but it wasn't going anywhere.. I kept hoping for some action but it just wasn't there. I wasn't feeling Ty's wife attitude. first off, her anger should've been directed at her no good husband, she seemed to only care about the fact that the side chick was threatening to destroy her "delusional perfect world", not the fact that this man has her feeling like she's crazy for accusing him of cheating, he actually beats her mad🤔🤔🤔... I'd want to know how long has this man been cheating and playing me for a fool⁉️ I'm not doing life in prison over no dog. What this silly chick going to do? Kill every chick that gives her dog hubby some twat? He's not going to do anything but replace the dead side chick... Dum dum.. I might read part two, hopefully it's not boring.

This is crazy how do you kill your mom and play it off and the dude you married is a bum like Nova said. When was everything Aoki said Skye just didn't know over she gives in now. I feel so sorry for her. I hope he doesn't do her wrong. Wiki will get what's coming to her and so will Throw unfortunately. Not my usual kind of read but it wasn't a bad read I want to know what happens with the moms husband though. Smh scandalous ppl

At first it was entertaining with the characters and their sordid behavior. It quickly became repetitive and boring. Also the stereotype of materialistic black people became offensive after a while. I hope the subsequent books are better in their stories. Good try though.

When it seems too good to be true; well, you know. That's the story of nearly every relationship in this book. Mothers aren't who they should be, friends are not really that, and lovers don't REALLY love one another. A lot happens here, too much maybe, in such a short story. Two sisters learn that their mother is someone they never predicted, a friendship is tested, and all kinds of intimate relationships are torn apart. The twists here seem thrown in, the ending, rushed. The book is great for an evening read, not so much for great literary discourse

From the Back Cover

In The Great Divorce, C. S. Lewis again employs his formidable talent for fable and allegory. The writer finds himself in Hell boarding a bus bound for Heaven. The amazing opportunity is that anyone who wants to stay in Heaven, can. This is the starting point for an extraordinary meditation upon good and evil, grace and judgment. Lewis's revolutionary idea is the discovery that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. In Lewis's own words, "If we insist on keeping Hell (or even earth) we shall not see Heaven: if we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell."

Lewis begins The Great Divorce by talking about Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, a marriage which Lewis finds impossible. Heaven and Hell must be divorced and all of his readers considering one or the other as an ultimate destination must realize that they won't be able to have it both ways. The two places are, by definition, different one from the other. You must embrace the joy that is heaven without reservation and you must renounce absolutely that which partakes of hell. The book itself, of course, is absolutist but it is also suffused with joy. Lewis' method of description/delineation of these alternate destinations is fantasy/allegory. His story moves along briskly and his arguments are sharply etched as they are embodied in spirits and those spirits' dialogues. This is not my favorite book of Lewis' but it is a nice introduction to his ways and his thought. It is also a very quick read.

This edition was edited by "Susan Brawtley" (no presence on the internet) by Brawtley Press (no website). No effort what-so-ever has been made to format the book according to any sensible rules of language. Sometimes the letters are arranged vertically, rather than horizontally (see image). It is a travesty to so mistreat Mr. Lewis!! The back cover is a cut and paste job from Wikipedia.

To agree with Sandy, the content is not the problem, it is the edition. There are numerous typos and glaring typesetting problems. I mean ridiculous things, like when the print is compressed into a single column of characters. Find a different edition, DO NOT BUY THIS ONE. I am frankly amazed that Amazon allows it to be sold.

Hear me out here. I know this is a beloved book, but I just can't rate it highly. I had never read this before, but I knew it was fictional, like Screwtape Letters, with the topic being heaven and especially hell. And although this was true, but I didn’t think it was anything near as clever, clear, or helpful as Screwtape Letters. In fact, I found that it might have been quite unhelpful at times, especially concerning Christian truth. Here’s why.I honestly admit this to people all the time: my greatest struggle out of all Christian doctrines is the doctrine of everlasting torment in hell. It’s just so difficult to swallow when you really think about what it means. I have literally wept over Revelation 14:9-10. Now, I do believe it because Jesus so clearly taught it, and his apostles followed clearly in his footsteps. I don’t think one can seriously consider the biblical texts and walk away a Universalist (like Rob Bell has recently), or an Annihilationist (like John Stott surprisingly did at the end of the his life). I am not tempted toward Universalism, but I see the appeal of Annihilationism. But once again, the Bible simply will not have it. Even Stott’s arguments fall flat. Eternal, conscious torment is the biblical doctrine.I say all that because that makes me approach this book with an even bigger hesitancy. I think the doctrine of hell is so serious and frightening. Again, what the Bible teaches is quite clear and solemn. And so, I think that the human mind is understandably prone to try to minimize what Jesus and his apostles taught. And I think that Lewis in this book did that a bit. Now, Lewis wasn’t teaching Universalism or Annihilationism, but I do think his description of hell was less like Jesus’ or his apostles’. For example, after reading this book, I don’t know how you can understand Lewis’ hell as a place of ‘weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ I don’t see how you can square Lewis’ picture of hell being like a weary town to the apostle John’s description of it being a place where “the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.”I recognize that Lewis made it very clear that his book was an analogy, even a dream as he made clear at the end of his book. But still, I think he romanticized hell and tried to take the biblical bite and seriousness out of it. And it isn’t mainly that this is ‘wrong’ or ‘misdoctrine’, I think it is quite hurtful.Lewis I know talks like this in his other writings. He often makes hell a place where people want to be, because they won’t accept divine love, because they are so consumed with themselves. And I actually agree with him here. We see this in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The man didn’t want to leave, and he never repents of his wrongs. However, what Lewis misses is the torment that they still face there. In Lewis’ description of hell, he often then makes it sound like their life is then very similar to what it was here, just with them being totally self-consumed. And I think this description isn’t as biblical. Once again, in the rich man and Lazarus parable, the rich man didn’t want to leave, and he wasn’t repentant, yes, *and* he also was in pain and suffering. He wanted at any cost to tell his relatives to not come to the same place. Lewis misses this last point in his description of hell usually. That all being said, I do think when Lewis talked about heaven, he was fascinating and helpful as he usually is. His ideas of joy, solidity, and brightness all were intriguing. His God-centered emphasis on heaven was spot on. And his picturing of humanity glorified was beautiful. It is for these that this book is a 3 or even 4 star. But in the end, the book isn’t helpful overall because of his blunting of hell. And this can be very detrimental to the faith of Christians. His insights about human self-centeredness and idolatry were great. But I think he pictures hell way too lightly. It simply can’t square with the biblical teaching. And I think his view of hell—even with it being just an analogy and dream—can lead one away from the weeping and prayerfulness that should occur when one considers the true, biblical teaching of eternal conscious torment. To sum it all up, Lewis’ picture of hell makes you think, “Wow. People would be much happier and glorious in heaven, and it doesn’t sound fun to live in hell. But hell doesn’t sound so so bad as many Christian have said in the past. It sounds so self-focused, and without deep joy, but it isn’t *that* terrifying.” While on the other hand, the biblical doctrine of hell and eternal, conscious torment makes you think, “Wow. People would be much happier and glorious in heaven, and it sounds terrifying to be in hell forever. Eternal, conscious torment, like in Revelation 14:9-10, sounds so awful I can hardly bear it. But since it is true, I will weep, I will pray. I want no one to go there.” For this distinction, it is hard for me to recommend Lewis’ book or any of his views on hell. He is clever on the selfishness and idolatry of man, but he blunts the tragic and terrifying truth of hell.

This is a convicting parable about the next world, beginning with a flying bus trip. The departure point is a huge, empty grey city that keeps spreading its borders because quarrelsome people only need to imagine a new house, and it's theirs. Some folk are happy to stay there, since they don't recognise it as a type of hell. For those who do jump on the bus, their choice to settle in heaven depends on their willingness to give up whatever holds the greatest grip on their hearts. It's really all about our idols, and the passengers are filled with all sorts of attitudes and hang-ups which they're loath to relinquish. There's always something they insist on clutching tight, even at the price of misery. There's 'Ikey' the businessman, who's determined to take plunder from the heavenly realm back down to the grey city, where he thinks he'll make a killing. He only manages to lift one tiny fallen apple through the sheer force of his will. There's a pathetic society woman whose earthly finery, which she was so proud of, appeared like rags in heaven. She was devastated, because she felt it was her whole identity, which she'd devoted her life to maintaining. There's a learned man who believes that the grey hell city could really be heaven, for its 'continual hope of morning and field for indefinite progress.' He's an ex-bishop who has written a book. In fact, libraries on earth turn out to be some of the most haunted places, filled with the ghosts of authors who keep wondering if people are still reading their books. The plight of creative people in this story is interesting. One artist was stressed because he saw no need to paint anymore, since everything was so annoyingly perfect. It's Lewis' warning to creative folk of the trap of being sucked in to pay more attention to their own work and reputation, rather than what it's all about. 'Every poet, musician and artist, but for grace, is drawn away from love of the thing he tells to the love of telling.' Wow, I guess our world does have a way of honouring the conduit, until it's hard for them to stay humble. One fascinating person in the new land is Sarah Smith of Golders Green, a lady of 'unbearable beauty and grace' with a procession in her honour. The narrator is anxious to learn her identity, but she turns out to be nobody he would have ever heard of. Just a humble person faithfully doing small things in her supposedly ordinary life. But people are regarded differently in heaven to how they ever were on earth. Great news for anyone who's ever felt overworked, unnoticed and under-appreciated.The narrator, who presumably represents Lewis himself, gets to meet his hero, George MacDonald, who becomes his guide around heaven. I knew Lewis was a fanboy of MacDonald's (see my review of Phantastes) but what a tribute this is, as he tries to find words to tell him all his writing has meant to him, since his teens.Overall, it's a great read for anyone who'd like a bite-sized, but meaty bit of C.S. Lewis, for it's short enough to read in one day. It leaves me with the impression that I would've liked being a witness when Lewis actually did meet MacDonald. Here are some quotes.'What can be called 'the Sulks' in children, has 100 different names in adults, such as injured merit, self-respect, tragic greatness and proper pride.''There are only two kinds of people. Those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "Thy will be done."''Joy on earth is defenceless against those who would rather be miserable. But in heaven, our light can swallow up your darkness, but your darkness can't affect our life.'

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#1,562,195 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This kindle book is fair, some of the info is o.k,, though dated. It also has at least one outright mistake, it incorrectly states that the residents of Bikini had gone back to live on that island, but they have not. Also there were some issues with the typeset, transferring it over to kindle. For example, when I first read "Ger many" I had to pause for a moment and then figured out it was saying the country of "Germany."

There is really very little content to review. Disappointing to spend $5 on a book and get less information than five minutes on the internet. The limited information included seems out of date.
